I found a complete list of every free agent player in 2008 and took out the players I think should be on this team's radar. I'll update the list whenever a player signs with a team or another player gets cut. Let me know what you think and if I should add anyone to this list. I will keep updating this thread throughout the free agent signing period. Take a look... QB (If Chad Pennington departs) - Daunte Culpepper | Oakland |31: Spent last season in the QB-killing Oakland. Threw for 39 TDs just a couple years ago. - Trent Green | Miami | 37: On IR in Miami, but still a good QB. - Byron Leftwich | Atlanta | 28: Cut from Jags but has youth experience and a monster arm. - Chris Redman | Atlanta | 30: Came out of nowhere and played well for a bad Falcons team - Billy Volek | San Diego | 31: Impressive in limited opportunities including beating Colts in playoffs - Kelly Holcomb | Minnesota | 34: Experienced vet could be a good mentor at this stage, but maybe not much else. WR - Reche Caldwell | Washington | 29: Cut loose from New England, but still young and has speed. Poor performance in 07’ playoffs… - Drew Carter | Carolina | 26: Tall and fast, but injury prone. Just what this teams needs minus the injuries. - DJ Hackett | Seattle | 26: Injury prone, but has size and is very underrated - Bryant Johnson | Arizona | 27: Will likely be looking to start somewhere, but he has been stuck behind a top receiving tandem in the desert - Devery Henderson | New Orleans | 26: Very fast and explosive, but hands are questionable - Samie Parker | Kansas City | 26: Similar player to Devery Henderson and has a similar problem with drops, but probably the better WR - Brandon Lloyd | Washington | 26: Talented WR was a flop in Washington, but has great hands and still deserves another shot. Has a knack for making circus catches… - Donte Stallworth | New England | 27: Talented, speedy play-maker would add another dimension to this offense. - David Givens | Tennessee | 27: Injury prone WR has good hands and is more of a possesion reciever. TE - Bryan Fletcher | Indianapolis | 29: Receiving TE is pretty one-dimensional - Bubba Franks | Green Bay | 30: Fell out of favor in GB, but he’s a big-blocker and red-zone threat - Eric Johnson | New Orleans | 28: Former Pro Bowler in San Fran has been on IR more often than the field. A great overall TE if healthy. - Bo Scaife | Tennessee | 27: Likely to return to Tennessee. Took over for Troupe. - Jerramy Stevens | Tampa Bay | 28: Has had problems with drops and attitude but has talent - Ben Troupe | Tennessee | 25: Fell out of favor with Tennessee, but has solid hands and blocking ability. - Ben Utecht | Indianapolis | 26: Underrated TE with Indy has good size also (6-6) - Jermaine Wiggins | Jacksonville | 33: Has bounced around the league but might have something left in the tank. - Kris Wilson | Kansas City | 26: H-Back type has been stuck behind Tony Gonzalez and Jason Dunn. Has good speed. - Jason Dunn | Kansas City | 33: One of the best blockers in the league, which is what this team needs. Not much of a reciever though... DE - Rodney Bailey | Arizona | 28: Has played in the 3-4 since his entry. This is depth - Marques Douglas | San Francisco | 31: Solid player in San Fran might not be an upgrade - Darrion Scott | Minnesota | 26: Ended on IR but has size and strength to play DE - Justin Smith | Cincinnati | 28: Only 2 sacks in 2007. Worth a shot in the 3-4 - Randy Starks | Tennessee | 24: Young underachiever might even be a possible NT. - Rod Coleman | Atlanta | 30: Pass-rushing specialist ended season on IR. Does he fit the system? ILB (Only if Jonathan Vilma is traded) - Niko Koutouvides | Seattle | 27: More of a depth guy and a special teams standout - Brandon Chillar | St. Louis | 25: A very solid OLB in St. Louis has also played ILB - Nick Greisen | Baltimore | 28: Big-run stopper is pretty one-dimensional but excels inside. - Dan Morgan | Carolina | 29: When he’s on the field he’s a great one, but that’s not too often - Rob Morris | Indianapolis | 33: Run-stopping LB ended season on IR. Does he have any good play left in him. CB - Randall Gay | New England | 26: Solid player in the New England secondary has connections to this team. - Ty Law | Kansas City | 33: Probably near the end of the line and his speed has faded, but he might be able to play still. A stopgap CB at this point... S - Chris Crocker | Atlanta | 28: Solid FS for Atlanta is underrated and might be an upgrade - Keith Davis | Dallas | 28: Outstanding special teamer might not be an upgrade at FS, but a depth guy - Mike Doss | Minnesota | 26: Once a top-safety, but now not as well thought of. Good tackler, big hitter and still young - Glenn Earl | Houston | 28: On IR in 2007, but is young and talented. - Eugene Wilson | New England | 27: Injury prone, but talented and versatile. If healthy, he’s a big-time player on defense. PLAYERS NOW OFF THE MARKET SEE POST #11
hmm, didnt know Drew Carter was available, the former Buckeye has speed an great hands, would be a great pocik=up at the right price...also, isn't Ebenezer Ekuban from Denver available at the DE position?...He is a solid player...also, Mike Doss would be an excellent pick-up as well, pait him with Kerry Rhodes
Great post, JetfaninPA. Good research. Honestly, as long as we sign Alan Faneca, the rest is all details to me.
I mentioned Jason Dunn in another post cause the Jets say they wanting a blocking TE, Utecht would fit good 2.....
Have to disagree with this, though. Any coach or GM who puts this man on the field is downright evil. I understand he wants to play but he's "scrambled eggs" on the next concussion, if not already. Might be a good quarterback coach for KC but I don't think anyone in good conscience can or should put him in a uniform.
We obviously need a big red zone threat WR, because all we seem to run are either unsuccessful fades. I'd like to see us take a look at an Earnest Wilford, if we don't address this need in the draft. And Madieu Williams is a helluva player. Not sure why he isn't being re-signed by the Bengals.
Washington would, at most, be a situational run-stopper, which is something he is near the top of the league at. At age 38 and at 375+ pounds he can't play full-time or near it, but he'd be an asset against the run for a handful of plays a game.
OFF THE MARKET (Players previously on this list but signed with another team) Pre-Free Agency Period - WR Muhsin Muhammad -- (Chicago) Carolina - OG Jamar Nesbit -- (resigned) New Orleans - WR Justin Gage -- (resigned) Tennessee - DL Tommy Kelly -- (resigned) Oakland - FS Dwight Smith -- (Minnesota) Detroit - OT Flozell Adams -- (resigned) Dallas - WR Andre Davis -- (resigned) Houston February 29th - QB Todd Collins -- (resigned) Washington - FS Madieu Williams -- (Cincinnati) Minnesota - WR Jerry Porter -- (Oakland) Jacksonville - ILB Kawika Mitchell -- (NY Giants) Buffalo - CB Asante Samuel -- (New England) Philadelphia - WR Ernest Wilford -- (Jacksonville) Miami - OG Alan Faneca -- (Pittsburgh) NEW YORK JETS
was kendrell bell a backup last year, cuz i'm checking out his stats and i saw that he had only 8 tackles last year but played 11 games.
faneca and a QB killer. move pouha to NT, and keep d-rob and shift him to DE. draft GHOLSTON, and groom him to either take over for ellis, or d-rob, if the switch does'nt work out.
I really think this class is good enough that we could pick up solid starters at any positions of need in free agency, especially WR and OG. As I said, I will keep this updated throughout the offseason. Is there anyone I missed on this list?
Depending on how the rest of FA goes, I wouldn't mind trying Kearse as a 3-4 OLB. He's definitely quick enough to play the role.
a player you could add to the QB list... David Carr... i think hes worth a shot. Hes never really had much talent around him. not to say the Jets are a goldmine of talent, but Coles, Cotchery, Washington, and Thomas Jones are some good offensive weapons
There really are a lot of potential options at OLB even if Pace doesn't end up in NY... It's too bad Kawika Mitchell was signed by Buffalo. I think he would have been a good fit as an ILB here.
