Yes but dude...we went 4-12. You can't ignore that because the sky IS falling, Mangini IS an idiot, Tannenbaum is JUST a bean counter, and the Jets have NO shot at winning with them. See 10-6 was lucky because...because...because...iunno we didn't have major injuries and we had an easy schedule. It's not like guys performed better under Mangini or anything...I mean Vilma declined for heavens sake.
To me.....The Jets' weren't lucky in '06' & unlucky in '07'. In '06', the Jets' made more plays & in '07' they didn't come up with the key plays. -Reasons...Jets' had a easier sked' in '06'.....Jets' didn't improve on there weakness's from '06'. No new significant talent was added to upgrade rosterin '07. Major reasons for lack of success in '07'....IMO. The scary thing for me is Jets' have the same weakness's for the past 2 seasons. Now...Thats' a problem....a huge problem. If u skim thru my posts...U will be able to identify all the weaknesses the Jets' have. I noticed it in pre-season....I believe I even made a post about it. Here it is below: {This is what sorta bothers me...This is the 2nd pre-season game & I can't think of any Jets' player that stands out & impresses me. I don't see any player shine. Thats a problem for me, cause where is the new blood on a team full of mediocre players. Actually....The only players that stand out are Kellen Clemens & Thomas Jones. They need many more players to stand out. This is what happens when u have so few draft picks. P.S. : A few more standouts....TE Ryan, FB Barnes....hits like a truck. LB Spencer flashes, The Kicker, S/T Ventrone}
I'm really bitter that we're a decade out from 1998 and still haven't had another great team to call our own. There's always something that screws up the works, frequently after looking golden the first season it's in play. 1998: Vinny looks great and the Jets actually win 12 games and go to the AFC Championship game. 1999: Vinny gets hurt game 1 and the Jet's best shot at a super bowl in 15 years is gone in a flash. 2000: Parcells steps down and Belichik flies the coop. That basically ends the Jets chances of competing seriously for a super bowl. 2002: Chad looks great, leading the Jets to a second round playoff game and compiling the most snazzy QB numbers the Jets have seen in awhile, maybe since 1969. 2003: Chad goes down with a broken wrist and really is never the same QB after that. The Jet's season goes in the toilet before it even begins. 2004: The Jets actually look like a balanced strong team for the first time since 1998 but of course Chad goes down with a rotator cuff injury and the Jets season peters out in the end. 2005: The Jets window is over but it's slammed shut when Chad reinjures his shoulder early in the season. The season goes south immediately. 2006: Mangini comes in looking like a fresh guy with bright ideas and the Jets over-achieve the entire season to make the playoffs before the Pats remind us who the good team in the division really is. 2007: The Jets go straight into a nose-dive at the start of the season and never pull out of it, compiling exactly the kind of horrible record staffed by exactly the kind of weak roster that caused the problems in 2005. the only difference is that injuries can't be blamed for the problems this time around, this time the Jets just look like a bad team. It's been a freaking decade since Bill Parcells breathed life back into this franchise and almost all of that breath is gone now and we're right back where we were when he took over. You like David Harris and Darrelle Revis? Me too, but they're not as good as Mo Lewis and Aaron Glenn were a decade ago and the rest of the team is much less talented than that crew.
Dude, I am sure you have that backward. :drunk: It wasn't luck that lost us Kendall and the lines finally deteriorating beyond operable. It wasn't luck that the defense regressed and players like Thomas did not step up and keep playing hard. Maybe with a little more luck in 07 we would have won 2-3 more games, but that still isn't saying much. In 06 I think we probably won 2 more than we should have. The Pats game being one of them.
Parcells also put us in cap hell with a bunch of signings as our HC. He gave this team a future with the core he drafted, but this franchise is only now starting to get money back in order. It doesn't help that Bradway was handing out contracts to injured QBs and our older players instead of retaining the young guys. A decade ago Glenn was a 4 year vet and and Lewis was a 7 year vet. And you're missing the point then...I'm pretty sure Mangini and Tanny know the team isn't as talented...it's why we went BPA in the draft rather than need last year and the year before, though in '06 our first round picks did fit immediate and long term needs as well as being BPA.
The significance there is that when an untalented team wins more than they should have, it was probably the coaching and thorough gameplanning.
That, and a muddy field. :up: Coaching is certainly a plus on this team though. Even with a horrible year like this past the team held together and did not fall into the blame game and back biting. Good leadership gets you through situations like that.
I think the CS has enough scratch and enough draft picks to do well this off-season. Let's see who they wind up actually getting rid of and actually bringing in.
Nice of you to get that out of what I said... Even then: How is it not perfectly logical to think that in '06 because we had an untalented roster that our coaches did more to prepare and coach up our players? Is it that much of a reach in thought? 2007 sucked because of a mix of inexperienced coaching and an undertalented roster.
I love seeing people who crowned Mangini as a great coach after one year bailing on him. This was and still is a rebuilding process. While I haven't been overly impressed with Mangini and i do think mangini should've cleaned house the moment he got here in regards to the implementation of his 3-4 (Vilma should've been traded beforehand). Mangini was brought here to build. He's going to get his 4-5 years as head coach of this team. This is year 3. The idea is to develop this quarterback, acquire building blocks and make strides so we can make a sustained run in the future. People were delusional last year thinking we could take on New England.
John McKay is the only coach in history who got 4 or 5 years to build a team from scratch and then took them to the playoffs. They were an expansion team and he was gone two years later anyway when they collapsed again. You just don't get that amount of time to build a team in the NFL, and even if you do get the time you can't do much with it. Too much water under the bridge by the time you go 10-6 or 11-5 in year 4 to make the playoffs and the dropback to reality the next season does you in. If you look at the successful coaches in NFL history you see a lot of: year 1 we suck, year 2 we're better, year 3 we're great or at least as good as year 2 and year 4 we're on the way. Mangini passed up the year 1 house-cleaning so now we're headed into year 3 and he's finally thinking about cleaning house. Too late.
You want to fire Mangini based on past experiences of other coaches? At some point no wild card team had ever won the Super Bowl. Heck, why bother even showing up, right? You dont' get the time you used to because some people are trigger happy when it comes to coaches. If this were always the case Cowher would have never led the Steelers to a Super Bowl. Mangini isn't going to fit that pretty formula above due to the season they had the first year, which luck or not, was indeed impressive. We all felt the team was flat on its back the year Herm left and we would be rebuilding for years. Other than some luck in couple of games I don't think much has changed.
DWare, I think that the low-medium talent of the NYJ in 06 got a shot in the arm from BS schemes and Chad's execution. However, the rest of the league (especially the stronger schedule we were saddled with) largely coached themselves up on BS' schemes in 07, and the OL had no answer for getting busted in the mouth repeatedly. By the way, has anybody looked at the wimp schedule that the Patriots ended up with as compared to the rest of us in AFC East?
I get the impression from reading these posts that some feel because tangini are relatively inexperienced that we need to live with the mistakes. Last time I checked this was the NFL not semi-pro. I fully expect them to be active and address the holes they have not addressed. If they dont and the team doesnt improve this yr I want them gone. I have faith in the coach and scouts but the free agency decisions have sucked and they need to fix the problem or be held accountable. You dont get a five yr plan, and if they want a successfull team to open the new stadium with then this yr has to be better than the sos of recent yrs.
...And Mangini's had two and his head's already being called for. What about Bill Walsh? Chuck Noll? Those guys got 4+ years, and spent the first 3 of them sucking. 1. Bullshit. Why can't you do much with it? 2. Um...we went 10-6 and made the playoffs just last year. Mangini has been coaching 2 fucking years. Is it really this complicated to you? One season and the sky is falling? And do we have to hear this shit every other post? Chuck Noll...Bill Walsh...Tom Landry...Dan Reeves went 2-7 his second year...Parcells went 3-12 his first year....Belichick....Shannahan was 16-20 his first 3 years...Ewbank was 13-22... Maybe you should actually look at the coaches throughout NFL history instead of spewing stuff you just made up. I'm sure the Jets FO and Mangini cares that you think it's too late...all those years you spent building powerhouses in a matter of minutes getting a comment like that probably would kill the guy to hear.
It isn't that we have to live with the mistakes, but give them a chance to learn from them. When you hire green personnel they aren't always going to make flawless decisions. Even the old pro's are susceptible to misjudging things from time to time. I agree, you have to see that they are going to learn from the mistakes and continue to get better. In our case, this year we have heard from both Tanny and Mangini about where they misjudged or made mistakes. Now lets wait and see what they do about it. The first step is recognizing the issues. In the past people hammered Herm because we never got that feedback from him. At a minimum you have to give them a 3 year plan to start (unless they really tank it both first years) and then re-evaluate and see where the franchise is. Are they making progress? If so you continue to allow them to build. Franchises can be turned around in about 3-4 years. Some teams can get it done faster based on the talent level of the team and other factors like the cap and draft picks/position. This isn't a perfect science though. Factors like injuries or draft day busts can wreck a teams plan to start winning.
Agree with everything but the bolded. See the reason I and so many KNOW Mangini is doomed to fail (besides the 4-12) is that most HOF HC's were born so and never struggled after their first year (if that). It just doesn't happen.
