The Giants would, in my opinion, be giving up too much to get Hall. Hall, who has publically recorded behavior problems is just what the Giants DON'T need. As I recall, it was Hall who publiclly supported Michael Vick for brutal treatment towards dogs despite Vick admitting guilt. What does that tell you about Hall? He's spoken out against his coaches and teammates. When the going gets tough, Hall starts fights and blames other people for the problems with the team. Who knows, maybe he'll end up like Randy Moss, going from a crappy team where he was so frustrated by their play to a team where he can win and he becomes a confident prick who plays well. But is that play worth a first round pick, especially when the Giants won't pick again for 32 players? Hall was the 8th pick overall back in 2004. Since then he has 17 career interceptions, 5 of them from last year. He's only 24 which is good. But what else could the Giants do with that first pick? It would be nice to solidify that second corner position with a young, proven shutdown corner. The Giants secondary would be one of the best in the league. I suppose if Hall can prove he's going to control his temper and his mouth (two things which have prevented the Giants from achieving greatness until the pre-modonas were gone or injured), he could be a serious asset to the team. I suppose if the Giants had an early 2nd round pick, they could use that on Hall, because I don't feel he's worth the 1st rounder, especially when we know the Falcons want to get rid of him. What are your thoughts?
I dont think its a good idea for the Giants. Aaron Ross looked great as a rookie CB and Corey Webster really came on during the playoffs. Both are young. I think Hall at 24yrs old is definitely worth the value of the Giants 1st round pick at 31, but the Giants have enough personalities on the team already with Shock & Burress that they dont need to add this guy to the mix.
I think this would be a great trade for the Giants. Their front 7 is amazing, but their secondary is suspect and they shouldn't fall into the trap of thinking that just because their front 4 linemen can get pressure on the quarterback they shouldn't get better in the secondary. Sure, this is a strong draft and draft picks are valuable, but in 4 seasons the only thing that matters in a draft pick is how good a player a team ended up getting, and in the case of Hall I think the Giants would be getting a pretty damn good player.
Last pick of the 1st round for an 8th overall pick who's lived up to his draft spot? Having a 24 year old Hall and a 25 year old Ross as the starting cornerback for now and the future? Sign me up. Jerry Reese is my new god if this happens.
It'll never happen, but if it does, don't kid yourself. This would be an absolute steal for the Giants. But it won't happen because the Falcons would be nuts to pull off such a deal, and or another team would come up with a better package.
It's amazing that in the same city as the Giants, who continuously try to make their team better in FA and the draft intelligently, and trade for players that will actually make their team better, there are Jets fans who are content to watch the green and white sit on their hands every offseason.
And it's amazing cause the only reason this is even being said right now is because they won the Super Bowl this year after spending years underachieving and building up talent. Just last offseason the Giants should have fired their coach...now they're innovative, smart, and blah blah blah... I love it. Anyway...if they traded for Hall that would be an absolute steal. All of a sudden their secondary has arguably the best young corner in the game, and then one of the best young corners from the '07 draft. It's just nasty to think that Hall has been in the NFL 4 years now and is still younger than the soon to be second year CB (Ross).
Do you know how much of a schill you sound like? "Just because the Giants won the Super Bowl..." Um... THAT IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL IN THE NFL, GENIUS. My questions surrounding the Giants this year were focused solely on Eli, and he was able to pull it together for the 4 most important games of the year. In the meantime, that is basically all they needed to do since they are CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR PLAYERS TO IMPROVE THEIR TEAM. But that's okay, because we're rebuilding for the next 15 years so we'll get our chance. JetsLookingforDWare, you are one of the biggest homers on the board and have become that way in less than a year. Congrats, I now know that you are a waste of time to respond to.
Uh yes I know that...it's treating it like it just happened and ignoring how much shit that franchise went through to get there that I was addressing. It's easy to say a team is doing well and going in the right direction after they win the friggin Super Bowl. How ignorant does that sound? The Jets...don't and aren't looking to improve their team? Ooook... Uh huh...I've been the biased one this whole time...it's blatant homerism to think that it takes more than 2 years to completely overhaul a franchise...but it's completely honest and objective to imply things like that the Jets aren't constantly looking for players to improve the team...Makes sense. You got to love that a trade rumor was enough for you to drop down to your knees in worship of the always-trying-to-improve Giants. Man I wish the Jets would look to improve...our coaching staff and FO seem so anti-improvement though. Is this what a true, objective, non-homer fan would say?
The Giants get DeAngelo Hall, it would be a phenomenal move on their part. This is who the Jets should look at. As a Jets fan, I would applaud Mike Tannenbaum if he were ever to trade for Hall.
DeAngelo Hall would be a great acquisition for the Giants. I just find it amusing that of all the people that moan and complain about how the Giants, Pats, etc. are doing all of these moves, getting big names, how many of them have bitched about the possibility of bringing in Samuel because it's too much money, not a major need, etc.
Not I. I am sick of these 3rd tier sleeper FAs that never wake up. Look around the league at the teams who are successful year after year and you will see that they not only draft well, but also bring in FAs that actually make a significant contribution to the roster. Add that to the fact that they actually retain their own impact players with some consistency. Aside from drafting well the past couple of season, we haven't done this.
I can understand where you're coming from. People need to realize that handling free agency well means understanding the current dynamics of the salary cap, not just attempting to repeat what teams from 5 years ago did under completely different circumstances. The teams that had sustained success in the NFL after the salary cap were mostly the ones that spent wisely and never broke the bank .Now though, teams can have salaries that approach the higher paying teams in the MLB, so really the specific approach isn't quite as important with a much higher cap. To be fair though, it isn't just a general philosophy in FA's that builds a good team it also takes scouting that can find players that fit in with the team philosophy as a whole. Going after sleeper free agents can work in today's NFL even if it isn't ideal, but it takes an F.O that is great at evaluating talent.
Am I only person here who thinks DeAngelo Hall is really overrated? That's not to say he's not a good player. But I think he's middle of the pack as far as CBs are concerned.
You are worshipping a front office that hasn't come close to doing what the Giants front office has done since Woody became the owner. They have outdrafted, out FA'd out coached and have managed their cap better than we have since Woody became the owner of the Jets and since Tanny and Mangini came here. This is the second time the Giants have been to the SB in this decade. They actually have GM who ran player development programs not accountants and they have a staff that blows ours away in both experience, and cost. At best the one thing you can say about the Jets front office is we aren't overpaying for our crappy performance.
I felt the same way about Kareem MacKenzie, Plaxico Burress, and Sam Madison, and the Giants were able to make them all affective roles players. I hate to give the Giants credit, but their formula is a winner. I love your GPC, by the way.
You're right, I think we're seeing a trend where teams (mostly across the board) are having a considerable amount of cap space and are able to sign or tag their own players while pursuing a few impact players to improve. This means teams will now have to be much more aggressive in pursuing FAs, I think, and the teams that don't are the ones that miss the bus. The Jets are part of that unfortunste group, and I hate that. Especially since they are running a base personnel that is hard to fill roster spots due to the limited number of players that are able to play in that scheme. On the scouting front, I think things like the draft, looking at it the past couple of years, is becoming less of a mystery to scouting depts. The first round is actually becoming a place where teams are finding their impact starters with regularity if you can believe the recent control group, and while I like that I also like to see rival teams bust out in the first round and it's happening less. I have actually been getting excited on draft day recently, something that hasn't happened in a few years.
