Who is more important to a National Football League Franchise in your opinion? This is a tough question. I could go either way. What do you guys think?
I thought this would be a good question to discuss with the board. However, since I put it in the forum it belongs, not too many people are reading it.
Definately the head coach. He is the one primarily responsible for the success of the team including player evaluation, scheme, dicipline, and running the show. The GM is the money man.
You would think Head Coach would be the answer. I can name all 32 Head Coaches if you ask me. As for GM's, it would be like only 10. That shows which position is more popular though. Not really which is more important.
Good question - Probably the HC depending on how much ioput he has on the personnell decisions. For instance look at the Herm / B'Way error (uhhhh) era. Herm had little say initially on who was on his coaching staff, let alone who contract offers were made to. If a HC is allowed substantial input then its got to be the HC...
Head coach... especially since most HCs tell the GMs who they want. Most HC's in this league help manipulate the GMs to get what the HC wants in his system so the HC is kind of a co-GM with the GM. I'll take the coach for sure.
I would ultimately choose HC, but I think it depends on the hierarchy in place. If the HC chooses his staff without interference from the GM, it's clearly on him, but if he has little input into player choices, it might not be his fault if the strategies don't work out. You really need effective people at both positions to be truly successful in the NFL.
Woah, whats with the sig. I'd have to go with the head coach because he develops the talent and creates the gameplan to win.
I'm going with GM because a coach can only do so much if the GM doesn't choose good players in the draft and manage the cap well. Look at Baltimore. Billick is a terrible coach but because Ozzy is so good at evaluating talent and building a team, they were able to win a super bowl.
It easily has to be a coach. A good head coach can influence what a general manager does. General manager can be a collective thing. A head coach needs to know what he is doing.
I'd say HC because in the NFL game planning/exploiting the strengths and weaknesses of your roster seem more important than in the other sports. Also a good HC has at least some influence on personel. For that reason if it was baseball I think the GM is more important.
I said the head coach because he develops the players. The GM gets those players that the head coach puts input on, but in the end I think the X's and O's coach is the one who is more important because he puts the game plan together and is responsible and in charge of using the best players he has to win.
Head Coach. A great coach can win with average talent and a proven system, but a great GM can't do squat with a bumbling idiot wasting his talent.
