they are always looking for bargains.undrafted free agents rarely compete like those that are drafted.don't get me wrong I am sure that there are a few that excell.but the majority of starting players come from the draft.those fans that are looking for starting material from n.f.l. europe are only hoping to get one on the cheap.
Nothing wrong with trying to find diamonds in the rough...business is business and if you can find a way to compete while cutting costs then that's what you have to do as a business owner...trust me on that one
the patriots seem to do well with that, Neil was a college wrestler and he turned out okay, you have to have diamonds in the rough because they make a team excel and its the your only as strong as your weakest link theory, would you like us to be more like the Redskins
YUp... If you could pay a $1 to wash your car and do the same job as the $20 carwash, why wouldn't you?
so do you think that a team with alot of holes are going to reload totally through the draft? The team has needs and with the salary cap, you can't just bring in stars. There's a new foundation that needs to be retooled, so they have to put the puzzle pieces in place without breaking the bank. buying stars works well if you're an establised team doing patchwork, but the JETS are a mess and need a core of young guys to develop a foundation. Hopefully the scrubs will eventually be weeded out by quality players through the draft.
It's not like UFA's are gonna break the bank or anything. Sometimes it's worth taking a shot with one of these guys, especially for a position like FB. I mean, all the guy has to do is make a block or two if he's inserted in the game. Shouldn't be too hard for a guy that played defense to hit people.
It depends where you look for them, and what about them you like. Do you realize how many players there are every year that are drafted towards the end of the draft, and some that are even signed as UDFA's, that have a lot of talent and can make it in the league but just need coaching, or just need to get bigger? There are players that have all the tools, but just didn't put up flashy stats in college. These guys are going at the end of the draft, but in the right system, they can produce in a big way, and it may not show up in the box score, but they have a lasting impact none the less. It all depends on what you're looking for. They are out there, and there are plenty of them per year.
every team looks for them, we never were huge on them, though that should increase now with the BB disciple..its not a bad move by any means
As long as we aren't wasting any valuable time that could be spent on recruiting FA's, I could care less what else we are doing. If Mangini was golfing in Antartica, I wouldn't care.
The reason the Jets are looking for "bargains" is because the system - both the scheme and execution - calls for very specific duties and skills. The Jets now are able to draft or sign a free agent who will fit into a very specific scheme. Thus, they sign two guys on the cheap that have the combined skills of a superstar - in the end, the net results are similar. The Jets no longer have to get the complete player at every position.
