Don't use that Madden excuse on me...What I said was very realisitic and could happen. First, Vilma should get a first day pick...IF we trade him. Second, I don't care what Pennington gets us...he's wortheless now. He won't be in a Jets uni next year, whether he's cut or traded. He costs too much. Third, Vilma WAS a star on this team when we played in the 4-3. Pennington WAS good, but there's no use in keeping him around. Neither one of these players fit in with the current regime and we should clean house while we can. David Harris and Darrelle Revis are the new STARS of this defense, and we have to build around them. There are no players, besides Chris Long, and Vernon Gholston...MAYBE Quintin Groves, that are worthy of being drafted to play in the 3-4, in the first round. This draft is weak, especially at the 3-4 nose tackle position. If the coaching staff/front office sees more value later in the draft, I think they'll trade out of the top 5...somewhere in the 9-15 range, I wouldn't mind picking up Lauranaitis, because he would most likely be the BPA. I know that we need to improve both lines, but I see us improving our o-line through free agency. I'm really high on Chris Long, but I think it would be much more valuable for this team to trade out and pick up two to three more picks on the first day. Rome wasn't built in a day. (If you still think Pennington's a star, then you must be the one playing Madden...he's become absolute garbage because of his injuries.)
I don't think Penny is a star by any means - hes a servicable backup in the league at this point - nothing more, nothing less. All I'm saying is that it is extremely rare to see a team make two trades involving players of that made up the core and then trade again - in this scenario, the jets will be closing in on 10 picks - something that is rare - and then you need the money to sign them
Pennington isn't a "core" player anymore...he's a waste of cap space. By getting rid of him, the Jets will free up a lot of money.
I think the scariest thing was the Patriots picking up DMAC...here's rooting for the Niners to win some games! There's no way the Jets can go ILB - they need help on the line or a pass rusher. Linebackers are useless when they are getting mauled by offensive linemen (see Vilma). Harris fits the system, but we can't afford to use another pick there with so many holes.
Harris isn't "getting mauled"...it's all about the type of linebacker. Lauranaitis is a beast and could play in the 3-4, but we have to many other positions that need to be filled before we go linebacker, but I wouldn't be too upset with a trade out and then taking Lauranaitis in the teens.
My thoughts exactly. It wouldn't be a popular pick, but could really pay off in the long run. Think of the potential of that line
I think your valuation of Vilma is low , at least a 3rd maybe a second. Depends on the need at the time. Again the same with CP , maybe a 4th/5th rounder. For a team with a decent O line he is a starter or a good back up. I hope Vilma does stay and we get a nasty NT in the Ilk of Ngata. That would solve alot of problems. I also hope the CP does stay as I think he has the smarts to be a good coach to Kellen. BPA might well be an End or DT by the time we get to pick anyway.
My brother, you're crazy. There are a ton of teams that play the 4-3 (Detroit, St. Louis, KC, NO, TB) that would be willing to give us a 2nd round (minimum 3rd round) draft pick for Vilma as he has yet to turn 26yrs old! A 4th rounder for Pennington is very likely - granted I would even take a 5th.
50% of me likes this pick for the reasons that you gave (young + athletic). Plus it follows the George Young planet theory back when he was GM of the Giants in the 80s & early 90s --- get the 300+lbs & build off of them. But DL is where we need the most help & I just can't see another year of watching the JETS gets blown off the line of scrimmage on D & getting run over time & time again.
If these 5 juniors come out it will be a great cb draft, King is the only one who maybe shouldnt come out Cornerbacks 1. Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio St. 2. Aqib Talib, Kansas 3. Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech 4. Reggie Smith, Oklahoma 5. Justin King, Penn State
Size, speed and production would say so. I question his ability to stop the run and drop back into coverage though. I'd much rather prefer Derrick Harvey or Vernon Gholston.
