Any deal that sends Santana to the NL is great. Of course that deal is so shaky because the Mets have to negotiate a new contract with Santana for it to happen and that would leave three teams in limbo while that was happening. That deal may just be somebody's pipe dream. Another reason this is somebody's bad joke is that the As only want pitchers in return for Haren, where are they in this?
Which is why I can't believe this one. I have a hard time believing that they would come as far as they have with him, have him locked under a reasonable contract through 2010(?), and then let him go in THIS deal.
I won't go as far to say he sucks balls but his Houdini act was a large part for the Mets not making the playoffs. I'm in the minority but if this was to happen you sacrifice a guy that still has no plate discipline and is leaps and bounds behind Rollins and Tulowitzki for a guy that would dominate the NL. The Mets issue was pitching last year and adding Johnson would also mean only one more year of the guy that makes 16 million to hit .220. I'd be all for it, unfortunately I think it's BS. The Twins aren't going to trade Santana , that's just my opinion. Maybe they'll show some balls and actually resign the guy.
Yeah, they've got a team option for 2011 as well. Santana is great but I think it's a toss up who would be more valuable to the Mets next year, him or Reyes. He's just too valuable, young and cheap to trade. Santana probably gets the edge over Reyes in a playoff series, but you've gotta get there first, which the Mets are anything but assured of at this point.
Your second paragraph hits the nail on the head. You have to get there first. When the Yanks first talked about telling arod to go to hell...I was actually proud of them...on board. Then you start to think...ok...now how the hell is this roster with not one guy that can hit 30 home runs going to get to the post season..forget about winning in the post season. Guys like Reyes and Arod get you there over the long haul...forget about his second half...too much track history to say thats the real Reyes. The Yankees made it to the post season without a number one starter. Hitting can do that over a 162 games. There are a bunch of teams (Twins...A's to name a few) that had a great one two punch in their rotation...but couldnt hit worth a lick. Double edge sword I guess...but I would never trade that kid...when on...hes one of the best players in majors. Santana is one of the best pitchers...so every 5th day you have a 70% chance to win a game....that guarantees nothing. Now the playoffs are a different ball game...but you have to get there.
