In the Post today http://www.nypost.com/seven/11142007/sports/jets/vilma__i_expect_to_be_a_jet_next_year_984234.htm Part of me wants to believe him but the team's recent history of people saying that isn't exactly one that inspires confidence (Groh, Edwards, Edwards on Coles).
Yet another example of Cannizarro taking liberties with his writings. Vilma never said he expects to be a Jet in 2008. Rather he said something to the effect of "I expect to be back in 2008" when asked about whether or not he will be healed by the beginning of training camp next year. When asked specifically about whether he will be with the Jets his quote was "I have no control over that," he said. "It's a business and if I do go to another team I wish the Jets the best of luck and hopefully I'll be successful. If I stay, I'm staying for the same purpose that I've been here for, and that's to win a championship."
Stating publicy that you want to be a Jet next year usually means that you wont be a Jet next year, otherwise there would be no reason to make a statement about your wants... adios Vilma!
This sounds very much like Herm, when he said: "As far as I'm concerned, I'm the Jets coach." There's two brands of lying in this world - real lying and sports lying. This is that second thing.
The only way that would happen is if Buddy Ryan stopped being old and came out of retirement to tailor a 51 defense.
Especailly since our genius coach took our most dynamic defensive player and chose a scheme which made Vilma less effective.
Seriously, how dynamic can he be if there's only one defense he's suited for? Dynamic isn't the word I would use to describe Vilma.
He even led the team in tackles the first year of the 3-4 but maybe dynamic is an overstatement but he was our best defensive player.
Vilma has a great nose for the ball when he is freed up and able to pursue it. I can't deny that. But he was drafted as a specialty player for a specific type of offense, and our GM chose a different route when he hired Mangini. If you want to blame someone, blame Tannenbaum; he hired Mangini, who never made any bones about the fact he was bringing the Parcells/Belichick systems he had learned over his career with him. That was his plan from day 1.
Yup, besides the fact that he was never dynamic in that one D that he is suited for anyway. He was a good 4-3 MLB and a great leader but no matter the D was never going to be the type of player to take over a game or build a D around. The guy had 2.5 sacks for his career and didn't make many if any game changing plays. Bring in the players that fit the D and get what you can for those that don't.
I dunno why people are so down on Vima. his first two years here in the 4-3 everybody loved him, people thought for sure he would be an all-pro year in and year out and now 2 years later, 1 year removed from being the leading tackler on the team we as fans want to ship him out the door. He still has skills to be an ABOVE AVERAGE 3-4 LB. name me one other LB we have that is above average for the 3-4 besides David Harris? aren't there 2 ILB's in the 3-4? so why not start Vilma inside with Harris and then ship out Hobson/Barton or both of them?
