clemens in controlling the game like a leader...his numbers arent huge but hes really managing the game well and making good decisions
he looks okay so far. there is no doubt that the offense has many problems beyond just the QB, but there is also no doubt that Penny's inabilities exacerbated those problems whereas Clemens strengths have a better chance of over coming them.
Kellen is playing solid game so far... I'm impressed with his mobility... There was a nice scramble and throw in there that looked like a play made by McNabb in his prime...
exactly. Not much better than anything Chad could do imo. He was impressive in the first half but hasn't done shit in the 2nd. ANother typical half game performance by the garbage NYJ
Very early impressions on Clemens: 1. He won't fumble very much. He has taken some wicked blindsides in both games and held onto the ball. 2. He's going to be very tough for defensive linemen to sack due to his lateral movement in the pocket. He keeps going down on DB blitzes. 3. He tops the ball a bit and tends to throw linedrives. This contributes to the number of tipped balls against him. He actually completed two passes that were tipped today and neither of them popped up, they were just deflected slightly. 4. Definitely a shotgun passer by inclination. When he's in the shotgun he sees pressure better and rolls out to his left a lot. 5. Very demonstrative QB. Uses heavy and exaggerated gestures when he is audibling at the line of scrimmage and moves players around with them. Kind of like an exaggerated version of what Chad does. 6. Looks down the middle of the field first and then scans to one side. This is the checkdown pattern of somebody who wants to throw deep. 7. A little bit too improvisational at the moment. Tries things close to the line of scrimmage on broken plays that are dangerous when he should just be getting outside the tackle box and throwing it away. Has gotten lucky with this so far, that won't continue for long. 8. Arm strength is very good but I'm not buying cannon yet. It'll be interesting to see how the game plan changes now that he is behind center. 9. Not as good as Chad at running the short passing game. Few people are. Of course the short passing game is what should supplement the rest of the offense, not what it consists of. 10. Cotchery is not comfortable with him yet. The two drops today were both important. 11. McCareins is his preferred receiver on 3rd down. He threw to him at least twice today on 3rd and long and got first downs both times. He also completed a key 3rd down pass to him against the Ravens. This is probably because they have worked together so much on the 2nd team in practice. 12. He looks good. No guarantees but I'm comfortable with him for the rest of the season. No INT's today was HUGE. That's progress anybody can measure.
Good analysis... I think his performance would have been a little bit better with Coles in the lineup too, as his timing was off on a bunch of passes, and Coles is the kind of guy who usually pulls stray passes in.... I only saw one 'hospital' ball from him, the one over the middle late to Wright... The thing I liked most today, however, was that after the 1st quarter, Washington RARELY ha 8 men in the box, unless Landry was blitzing.... A very important, and the most significant change from having Chad in there
This board went nuts for Pennington 5-6 years ago and would have been bonkers for Browning Nagle 15 years ago. I reserve judgement.
QB play was 1000% better this week then it was the prior five. It was pretty cool having an NFL quality QB for once.
Fair enough. I don't think we'll really know if he has the stones for another few starts. Then we have to safely get through the "he's had 3 broken bones in his life already" phase of being a Jet's fan.
That's the part everybody has to remember. Even if Clemens lights it up for the rest of the year, teams will have half a year of film to study and figure out his tendencies. His real test, if he does look good this season, is how he overcomes teams specifically gameplanning the bad aspects of his game, and how much he improves in the offseason with half a season of starts under his belt.
Got a strong arm , good accuaracy (could use the work ofcourse) great athlethicism to leave the pocket , good speed and has leadership atleast it showed glimpses today.
One other thing I'd like to mention about Kellen.... Instead of the RBs having 10 catches each, today Clemens got a lot of different guys involved on offense... Baker had a good number of grabs, Smith got a bunch of chances, Kowaleski (sp?) got a TD grab, and he even went to Wright once or twice.... With a full arsenal of WRs (Coles, namely) Kellen could help this offense even more, as, although he favors a couple guys, like Cotchery and McCareins, he doesn't hesitate to spread the ball around.....
This is a very good point and one I belive is the difference in the Chad/Shotty offense from last year to this. Teams had a year of film in the can to study what our team was doing in the shifts and formations we run. Chad did not have the ability to make plays once the deception did not work or protection broke down. With Kellen, it will be interesting to see if his tendencies are as easy to pick up for opposing defenses. Thats something that will really come to light early next year, if we have the same coaching staff.
