From the Daily News ROOKIE MISTAKE? During Revis' contract dispute over the summer, the Jets demanded a six-year deal. They got what they wanted, but that six-year contract has shrunk to four years, the Daily News has learned. The rookie cornerback already has logged enough action to hit a 35% playing-time incentive, voiding the final two years. It's now a four-year, $16 million contract. The Jets are prohibited from using the transition or franchise tag in 2011, meaning they will have to spend at least another $14 million to buy back the last two years. It will be a major setback, financially and otherwise, if the Jets are wrong about Revis. So far, he looks like the real deal, but he's still looking for his first interception. "I'm getting my hands on a lot of balls," he said. "Sooner or later, I'll get an interception and try to make a good play out of that." Looks like a big error on the part of the FO
Remember, the Jets demanded a 6 year contract and Revis missed 3 or 4 weeks of camp and now the details come out. So if the Jets want him after 4 years they have to pay him $14 million plus a salary or else he walks free and clear. Great job Tanny.
That's awesome...we're gonna have to draft another corner in 3 years -- probably right after we fix our run defense, our pass defense will be in the gutter.
Actually I like the contract. If he sucks they can cut him loose after 4 years. If he's a top notch player which I think many of us think he is, 14 million for 2 years of a cornerback will be much cheaper then the going rate for top notch corners.
Is that what it is? Why then do they say they will have to spend AT LEAST another 14 million to buy back those last two years? Obviously there is something more to it.
I think the 14M is ONLY the buyback bonus. You also have to factor in what you would pay Revis so if you go with ur 7M per year then he cost us 28M over the last 2 years unless there is another clause in the contract still unknown
That is worded very funny. Hell probably cost 7million to keep right now for those two years, or we could just rework a deal.
Please provide an example of one CB (other than a franchised one) that is making a base salary of $7mm plus.
This was brought up several days ago, and this is also nothing new. All of this information was known when the contract was signed. Cimini likes to recycle stories that happened weeks and months ago. It's how he writes half of his articles.
there?s something between boom and bust. what if he?s a solid corner? pay him that much money or let him go and look for someone else?
I'm sure he filed this away until Revis had the PT to affect the contract, and then ran the story. It's relevant, and is just more egg on the FO's face, when they thought they were so brilliant to force a holdout over the length of the contract.
The FO f'd up 2 BIG times this off season , Kendall and Revis. I hope they learnt their lesson , this will have ramifications on future contracts and renewels though. Fingers well and truely burnt.
There is no egg on their face...there was almost no chance he wasn't going to log 35% of the plays this year. They made that deal knowing full well that he was going to reach that incentive. They probably realize they'll have a lot of cap room in that year so they'll be able to absorb whatever cap hit the contract requires.
What allegation? You posted that the Jets would paying $14mm for the contract plus $7mm per in base salary. I am just wondering what CB is making $7mm in base salary for comparison purposes.
They can still buy back the contract, it is their option and they structured this deal knowing this, this is REALLY old news
