Sorry, same one I started this thread with, espn.com/NFL/Teams/Patriots/Stats. Look at their LB tackles for loss versus ours. That's my source Professor...

    Here are the Pats' stats:

    Player - TFL 07 - TLF 06

    LB:
    Thomas - 2
    Bruschi - .5
    Seau - 2.5
    Vrabel - 0
    Colvin - 0

    DL:
    Warren - 1
    Wilfork - 1
    Green - 2

    Here are the Jets:

    LB:
    Vilma - .5
    Barton - 0
    Thomas - 1.5
    Hobson - 0

    DL:
    Coleman - 0
    Robertson - 1
    Ellis - 0

Their LB's have 5, ours have 2. Their DL has 4 and ours has 1, and DRob's was probably by accident.

Don't you think it helps their LB's when their DL is making more plays than ours? Our DL gets pushed back several yards a lot. Hard to make tackles for a loss that way. When I watch NE, their DL does not get pushed back 3 & 4 yards every other play like ours does. Our DL is the problem, not the LB's.

i don't think vilma's the problem. i think the dl is. get a true nt, move robertson to de, and make coleman the main backup and i think you have a better d-line by far. that's what's killing the linebackers.

here is my question, may be a little off topic but i just thought of it and didnt want to start a new thread for it.

ok the ng in a 3-4 is supposed to block up the middle and command 2 blockers, which means he needs to be a pretty big guy, or does he?

the 3 technique dt in a 4-3 is a penetrating dt, typically taking on 2 guys?

i was just reading about the cowboys 3-4 and how they want to get penetration out of their 3 down linemen, now robertson is supposed to be a smaller gap shooting player that will get penetration, why then would he not work in the 3-4 but would in the 4-3? i dont grasp it, it just doesnt make any sense. if his thing is to penetrate and work through gaps and we want him to take up 2 blockers wouldnt gap shooting be the best thing for him to do to command 2 blockers?

please help me with this, i just dont understand the whole he needs to be a big guy to be a ng, its simple pick a gap and hit it let the lbs take care of the other a gap, at least in my world and understanding, using his abilities to work with our teams objectives.

The interesting thing about that is the Cowboys starter (Jason Ferguson) is out with an injury and he's lighter than DRob.

Splitting between two guys to get upfield and holding up two guys from driving you backwards are two entirely different things. Splitting the double team takes more speed, and athleticism while holding your ground against two guys trying to move you takes more strength (mostly lowerbody), toughness and weight.

but splitting a double team is or should be the goal, if you dont succeed you have still taken up those 2 blockers. if you do succeed you get in the backfield.

maybe i am oversimplifying it but i just dont understand how he can be a penetrating dt in the 4-3 but cant manage to hold his own jock in the 3-4. if he can penetrate then thats great, penetrate and take up 2 blockers. i dont see where it says you must STAND STRAIGHT UP and occupy people just so long as you occupy them you are doing the job.
