He was okay today, but the Cardinals played a listless game. Tim Rattay was awful in relief of Kurt Warner.

It wasn't like the Panthers had any other choice but to Play Vinny, considering that Carr is not only injured...but he throws like Chad and holds on to the ball too long ala Neil O'Donnell. Not the best Combo to have as an NFL QB.

and with Delhomme out for the season, They'll just have to take their chances with VT. One upside for VT in this is that his Victory put his team at 4-2 unlike when he was here and we were below .500 with little to no hope of doing much of anything that season....

Also, unlike here, VT it seems DOES HAVE AN O-LINE TO PROTECT HIM *AND* HAS A DEFENSE(gasp!) TO DEPEND ON!! Will wonders never cease?

OH and he also has a Big-Time Receiver that he hasn't had since Keyshawn back in the day in Steve F'n Smith.....Think about this : In the 3 games that Carr played prior to his injury, Smith failed to get 100 or more yards....In ONe game with Vinny? Take a wild guess.....

They could've done worse than Vinny considering that Arizona was asking for his services prior to him signing in Carolina(The reason for this I heard was simple Geography in that he didn't want to be far away from his family; carolina was a bit closer and more manageable according to him)

Our o-line has been playing a lot better as of late...the reason Vinny was successful today is because he can still throw the ball. It's sad that a 43 year can throw harder than Chad Pennington.

Vinny still gave us the best season since SBIII. 1998 was a blast. He's all heart and a lot more talented than noodlearm squarepants.

Vinny could actually fit in well with Carolina for the rest of the year. They actually fit him well as the little mobility he had is completely shot in his age, but make no mistake he still has most of that rocket arm and now is a wiley veteran. With protection and the deep-threat WR (Smith) that suit him nicely, I wouldnt be surprised if Vinny starts for the inept Carr the rest of the year.

Trade Chad for Vinny? lol that would be an ironic twist

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Early last week, Vinny Testaverde turned down a job offer from Arizona, then accepted one from Carolina.

The Panthers are glad he signed with them -- and do the Cardinals ever regret his decision.

The 43-year-old Testaverde hit Steve Smith for a 65-yard touchdown pass to lead Carolina past the Cardinals 25-10 on Sunday.

Arizona had to press Tim Rattay into service after losing starter Kurt Warner to a sprained left elbow in the first quarter, and Rattay threw three interceptions.

DeAngelo Williams ran for 121 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers (4-2), who are 4-0 on the road this year. John Kasay kicked four field goals for Carolina.

Testaverde became the oldest starting quarterback to win a game in NFL history, and the third-oldest to start one. His touchdown pass gives him at least one in 21 straight seasons, extending his own NFL record.

The Cardinals contacted Testaverde last week after learning starter Matt Leinart would miss the rest of the season with a broken collarbone. The plan was for Testaverde to back up Warner.

Testaverde said he was "on my way" to Arizona before talking to his family and deciding the desert was too far away.

"I just couldn't do it," Testaverde said. "At this point in my career, I didn't want to go without seeing my family for as long as I thought I would be away from them. And that was really the reason why I did not come to the Cardinals."

A week ago, Testaverde and his family spent Sunday afternoon in their New York-area home, watching the New York Jets and New York Giants on television. Testaverde spent this Sunday carving up the Cardinals.

He completed 20 of 33 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown, and he did not throw an interception.

The Cardinals (3-3) could have used Testaverde when Warner, making his first start of the season, was knocked out in the first quarter with a sprained left elbow. The injury occurred on a sack by Julius Peppers, who forced a fumble on the play.

With Warner out, Arizona had to turn to Rattay, whom it signed after Testaverde snubbed them. Rattay makes his home in the Phoenix area.

Rattay was 12-of-24 for 159 yards with three interceptions.

"Being the No. 2, I thought that there was a chance I might get to play some," Rattay said.

Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said the Cardinals had to drastically scale back their playbook when Rattay took over.

"Obviously, Tim wasn't comfortable with things, so we had to change our plans," Whisenhunt said. "That's what happens in this league."

Warner said he didn't know if he would be available when the Cardinals visit Washington next week.

Unlike the Cardinals, the Panthers appear to be set at quarterback for now.

They called Testaverde because starter Jake Delhomme is out for the season with an elbow injury, and because backup David Carr has a sore back.

Testaverde arrived in Charlotte about 10 minutes before practice on Wednesday, introduced himself to his new teammates and began learning the offense.

"Our guys rallied around him," Carolina coach John Fox said. "I think they saw some of the things he's capable of during the week in practice."

At 43 years and 335 days old, Testaverde is the third-oldest quarterback to start a regular season game in NFL history. Steve DeBerg started at 44 years, 279 days old on Oct. 25, 1998, and Warren Moon was 44 years, 8 days old when he started on Nov. 26, 2000.

Testaverde didn't learn he was starting until Saturday night, when Fox took him aside at the team's hotel.

"We were at the snack after meetings, and he told me he felt good about it, and I told him I felt good about it too," Testaverde said. "Just dial 'em up and we'll go out there and throw it around."

That's pretty much what Testaverde did, although in the early going the Panthers stuck to short passes to allow Testaverde to find his rhythm.

Testaverde flashed some of his old style on the play that put the Panthers ahead to stay.

The Panthers trailed 10-9 midway through the fourth quarter when Testaverde saw Smith ran past Cardinals cornerback Rod Hood, who pulled up along the right sideline.

"When I threw the ball, I saw the defender stop and all I could think was, 'I just overthrew Steve for a touchdown,' " Testaverde said. "But he caught it and ran, and I was looking at his feet to make sure he didn't go out of bounds."

Testaverde ran downfield to congratulate Smith, who told him, "I told you you couldn't overthrow me."

"So I believe him now," Testaverde said.

For Testaverde, more than an endurance test

So many miles. Somewhere along the way, the derision turned into delight.

So many years. Sometime long ago, the criticism faded into silence.

Now, there is only a man, a ball and the jersey of another team. For Vincent Frank Testaverde, survivor, that seems to be plenty.

Everything else, Testaverde has outlasted. The coaches who benched him are gone. The fans who booed him are invisible. Even the writers who criticized him - and yes, I feel qualified to speak for them - have to appreciate the sheer endurance of a man who loves the game so much that he will not let it go.

When Testaverde signed up for another hitch in NFL this week, one of the most remarkable stories in sports continued. After all of this time, the big guy is still going. At the tender age of darned-near 44, Testaverde is a Carolina Panther. And a possible starter at that. Bless him for it.

He is still standing. After all of the sniping and all of the smirking, after all of the blows to his body and all of the blows to his reputation, how can you not appreciate Testaverde in twilight?

Perhaps no athlete has ever been as successful at changing his image. Who else has been criticized so harshly for so long and still risen above it? He has been the Next Big Hope, and he has been a punch line. He has been a reclamation project, and he has been a wanderer. He has made that rare trip from being called clueless to being called ageless.

Testaverde has hung around so long, it seems, that he has come back into style. Who would have thought it?

That's the beauty of Testaverde's career. Somewhere along the line, he has dared everyone to reconsider their opinion of him.

For instance, do you remember all of those years when Tampa Bay seemed convinced Testaverde was simply awful for the Bucs? Turns out, the opposite was true.

No, this isn't to suggest that Testaverde was a great quarterback here. He wasn't. He won 24 of his starts and he lost 48. He threw 112 interceptions in 76 games. In three straight years, three different coaches sent him to the bench.

And so Tampa Bay fell out of love. A billboard made fun of his colorblindness. A newspaper cartoon mocked his accuracy by suggesting he overthrew candy bags at Halloween. Opponents questioned his intelligence. And, yeah, I criticized him, too. Looking back, Testaverde wasn't the only guy who could have been more accurate.

How was Testaverde supposed to succeed in the dysfunction that was the Bucs of the Hugh Culverhouse era? There was one1,000-yard running back in his six years here. There was never a great receiver. There was never a great coach. For Testaverde, there was never a chance.

For a lot of quarterbacks, that would have been the end of it. NFL history is filled with highly drafted disappointments who fizzle and fade. Testaverde could have been a Ryan Leaf, a Tim Couch, a Rich Campbell.

Testaverde was different. Testaverde went to better organizations and played for better coaches. He kept pulling a helmet over his skull. He kept taking snaps. He kept throwing spirals. You want to compare Testaverde to someone else? Start with George Blanda, the old Raiders quarterback who played until he was almost 49.

"It's remarkable," said Paul Hackett, the Bucs' quarterbacks coach. Hackett was with Testaverde with the Jets, as he says, "way back when Vinny was only 40."

"The first thing is, he loves this game," Hackett said. "And he is willing to work to stay in shape so he can play it. Other people want to do that, too, so there are some genetics. But the thing with Vinny is just how much he likes playing the game."

Think about this: If Testaverde's career was a person, it would be able to vote. That doesn't happen, anymore. There are too many shots to the ribs for a quarterback to play into his 40s. Joe Montana was 38 when he left the game. John Elway and Dan Marino, too.

Yet, Testaverde keeps plugging. And somehow, his statistics have swelled to staggering levels.

Testaverde has completed more passes than Montana. In all, only five players in NFL history have more completions.

Testaverde has thrown for more yards than Johnny Unitas. Only five players have more yardage.

Testaverde has thrown more touchdowns than Dan Fouts. Only nine players have more scores.

No, Testaverde has not had a Hall of Fame career. But he has been pretty good. He has played for a long time.

It's good to see him back.

After all, we probably only have another decade or so to appreciate him.
