I know it's early but a good read:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...struggling_chad_penningtons_future_in_do.html

    some tidbits:

This offseason will define where the Jets will go for years to come. I do not envy the job of the FO and CS.

Well, they can't trade Pennington, Robertson or Coles at those numbers so, as it always does, it will come down to restructure or cut them. Robertson won't restructure because he doesn't want to be here. So waive good-bye to him. So much for rebuilding...lol.

What does D-Rob have to do with rebuilding? He's from the Bradway era. Good riddance to him. Let's trade Chad and resign Coles.

He has everything to do with rebuilding. He was a #4 pick no matter who brought him in. While we're at it, the following year Vilma will be gone, next Ferguson and Mangold.

Oh, I forgot. He's was a #4 pick. Well, let's ignore the fact that he sucks and give him some more money then.

He only sucks because he is playing a position he is not suited for. Like everybody else on our defense.

You're kidding, right? You really think he is a NT? Really?

So is the media... gotta be realistic man, unless the Jets pull off a miracle turnaround some of this stuff has to be in the back of their minds. Robertson 12 million against the cap... The most important position, QB, undecided/unstable. Like I said this off season will is make or break the Jets for the next few years.

Mangini erred when he forced the 3-4 defense on this teams personnel. He inherited a team that had 4 number one picks in the front 7, (5 if you take into account Robertson was 2 # 1's) and that group was not suited for the 3-4. Rebuilding is one thing, but to throw away all the good that had been built up over the previous 5 yrs was a mistake. Now it looks like all those players will be absent from the team very soon.

Please stop with the 2 #1 picks were traded away for D-Rob already. It's misleading at best and false at worst. They swapped positions in the first round to move up and and gave up ONE first rounder to trade into the position to get him.

I think you just explained it perfectly. The Jets spent a total of '2' first round picks ( a one for one swap plus another # 1 ) to draft Robertson. I'm sorry if I was misleading before.

There is no way D-Rob is worth $12 million on the cap even playing at the top of his form in a 4-3 defense at 3T. We all need to face the fact that D-Rob at best is an average to good NFL defensive tackle. He makes some plays and he looks silly some times when he blows an assignment by shooting the wrong gap. Obviously as a 3-4 NT he is just a poor player.

Here is a link to a list of upcoming free agents. I looked primarily at the DL and OL, to get an idea of whose out there. Anyone have any comments on who from this list might fit our schemes?

Aside from the potential FA's discussed in the article, what are your top 5 needs for the Jets in the offseason?

For the sake of trying to stay positive, I'm going to assume Clemens plays well. Here is my top 5.
    1) Real 3-4 NT. I've given up on Robertson as a NT. As has been discussed at length, this should have a major impact on our defensive success. For all the draft guru's, are there any real potential 3-4 NT's coming out?

    2) A mauling, run blocking RT. I think our o-line is only 2 pieces away, and we may already have a very good run blocking guard on the roster in Bender. A solid young run blocking RT could make this line very good very quick.

    3) Playmaking OLB. We need someone that can consistantly get pressure and rack up the sacks as well as be solid in coverage. Right now we have two very average OLB's.

    4) Continue to develop Bender in terms of pass protection.

    5) Find a future replacement for Ellis to start grooming.

    My Jets top 5 needs:

    1. Definitively decide whether to use a 3-4 or 4-3 and DITCH the players who do not fit. Better off with mediocre players playing in a scheme they are suited for than stars playing in a scheme they are not. Huge difference on the cap going forward.

    2. Assuming the 3-4 is the choice, and I'd be ok with that because there are 3-4 mavens out there to replace Tangini with in a year if necessary:

    a) NT
    b) ROLB
    c) LG
    d) RT
    e) RDE

    The Jets gave up 2 1sts (13 and 22) and a 4th (116) for D-Rob.

The trade was an obscene waste of value made by a desperate front office that had just had one of the worst months in Jets history as the Redskins signed 4 good players away from the team with only feeble responses.

Here are some players that will be available through the draft and free agency (free agents listed first) that might be worth the Jets taking a look at.
    Thoughts?

    1) ????????? Frank Okam / BJ Raji / Red Bryant
    2) Max Stark Godser Cherilus / Tony Hills / Barry Richardson
    3) Karlos Dansby / Boss Baily Quentin Groves / Derrick Harvey
    4) Alan Faneca / Jake Scott Jordan Grimes / Roy Scheuning / Will Arnold
    5) Justin Smith Chris Long / Glenn Dorsey?
