The Jets have morphed into something unrecognizable.

I've been a Jet fan and an AFL/AFC fan since 1965.

    Just thought i'd state that.

Educate us young whipper-snappers on what a "good old-fashioned" AFL team looked like?

Yeah we look more like a basketball team. You know, trying to avoid contact -- not blocking, not charging.

Then be a fan of a different team if it is too much for ya, I am as frustrated at this team as anyone else doesn't mean I have to make a thread about it, but you don't have to make a thread announcing to the world about how long you were a Jet fan, we've have a separate Jets Experience forum that you can put that in without saturating the main Jets forum with stuff like this

We just look like a bad football team right now with guys not playing up to potential, guys not getting the ball who should, guys not being on the field who should, and guys on the field who shouldn't be on the team (McCarien-choo)... anyway we just look really really bad up to this point, and no matter how much I hate to say it... A lot of it is coaching, or lack there of to this point...

That's crap. If you are a true fan then you have every right to be upset and scream when you see everything being done wrong year after year after year. It's people willing to let it slide and say "well, we're rebuilding", "wait till next year", "it's only his second year" that should be looking for another team to cheer for.

You miss understand, you have every right to post about it, in fact I have no problem with that. I DO have a problem with every poster making their own thread about being upset. It makes the Jets forum dull and depressing. There are PLENTY of people agreeing with you and such there are already plenty of threads about it there is no need to make another one.

I don't think RockJet was beating his chest about his longevity. He's taken a step back from all the negativity and trying to take a 10,000 foot view of the franchise.

When teams come into the league, they search for a formula that works for them. When they find success, the best franchises have managed to adopt that "persona" and use it as a guide for building and maintaining their future rosters.

It's like a mission statement for a company, or a brand personality or essence for those of us in marketing and advertising.

After decades of ineptitude, the Steelers found their essence under Chuck Noll. And though there have been some bumps in the road, the Steelers always try to get back to their championship model: Strong running game, fearsome defense.

Now you can say that those are things that every successful team has or should strive for, but its a formula that works for them more often than not.

And it is very reassuring for the Pittsburgh fans when they can look on a Steel Curtain-like defense and say "Ahh, now that's what a Steelers team is supposed to look like!"

The Werblin/Namath Jets were daring, cocky and believed in the power of --dare I say it -- a big armed QB and the long ball. It's who they were, it's why they were embraced, and it's how they reached the holy grail.

At times like these, when it seems like there's a problem with every part of our team (Coach, GM, Owner, Stadium, QB, Defense) and there is, it can be helpful to step back and take a big picture view of who WE think the Jets are, or should be.

What does matter what we think? I don't know. I've written my share of letters and made my calls to the GM. And who knows, maybe one of these guys on the website is named Woody Johnson.

Now I've been a supporter of Pennington, and believed there's more than one way to QB a team, but RockJet has me thinking it's time to reassess what it means to be JET. ANd maybe Woody needs to think about how he would define the quintessential NYJets team.

Amen brother... The best teams historically, get back to prominence time and time again, generally, by following a formula...

Pittsburgh, fast, attacking, nasty D, good running game.... Chicago, tough defense and not much else.... San Francisco, WCO....

I would LOVE to see the Jets get back to their original successful identity....

Gun slinging QB, speed at one side at WR, great possession WR on the other side... Solid 2 headed running game.... Opportunistic, if not great, defense....

The Jets wouldn't even have much of a fan base if it weren't for that team and their success....

I know it's never going to happen, but I'd love THAT to be the formula around which the NY Jets were built...

I've seen the Jets go through many incarnations (just like any other team)

We can try to be the 85 Bears, we can try to be the 81 Chargers...there's one thing the Jets franchise will never have.

    luck.

Geez no wonder old people are known to be grumpy, there is something in life called sunk cost, they are stuff that passed long ago that is irrelevant today, so there is no point in dwelling in the past since I am sure the Jets from 39 years ago likewise your feelings of 39 years ago means very very little to talk about Jets today. Maybe when you do that you won't feel as old, old grasshopper

Then maybe instead of just standing how long he was a Jet fan, instead maybe he actually describe what he means by a "good old-fashioned AFL team", since most of the people on the board weren't even born yet when the AFL actually existed.
