You're probably right, I've seen them before. On here, I think. But to me it will be odd to be at a Jet game with everyone in green and white, including the opponent, except the Jets. Even in the hideous green helmet era we were at least still green and white.
There's no source attributed to that bit of information. Feel free to take Wikipedia on its word, but I'm pretty sure the issue is discussed in Eshkenazi's book, so if anyone has it and can confirm that would be great.
Wikipedia is a pretty good source. shit can be altered but its not like Wiki isnt regulated. stop listening and start finding out for yourself. Hess was always the source.
Don't believe it. Sonny Werblin was the principal owner when they brought the team from Wismer. He named them the Jets and colored green based on his birthday as mentioned earlier.
I didn't read it quite that way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hess_Corporation#Trivia Wiki can be changed to what ever someone wants. It is not always a valid source.
Does anyone have this book? http://books.google.com/books?id=9DYFAAAACAAJ&dq="New+york+jets" All I found was that the Jets were named so because it rhymed with Mets.
I think the better - and far more entertaining piece of trivia - is that the Jets used to practice at Riker's. They couldn't practice at Shea until the Mets season(s) were over in October throughout the '60's, so they got bused to the prison. Namath: "It started getting good once you got there because the prison band was usually there in the end zone and they would be playing football fight songs, all inspiring. It was a gas." "No-one would chase the footballs that went out of bounds, because the prisoners were hanging out there and anytime a ball went out of bounds it either stayed there or was thrown back. You didn't see any Jets chase errant footballs."
This is the correct reason the Jets' colors are green and white. It was Sonny Werblin's idea. Werblin was the brains and idea man behind the Jets from 1963-1967. Leon Hess was low-man on the owner consortium at the franchise's beginning. Hess changed the color of his gas stations AFTER he became majority owner of the Jets, which didn't occur until 1976.
Yup. You have to pander to the Irish! Being Irish myself, and having an affinity towards the color green, may be the reason I first latched onto the Jets as a young lad. The colors really did compliment our Irish quarterbacks -- O'Brien, and O'Donnell-- Just to name a few.
I think I still have the Gerald Eskenazi book. If I can find it I'll check it, but I remember reading that Sonny Werblin chose the colors.
I also recall that Werblin chose the colors; he was the lead when the consortium bought the Jets, Hess was a minor player. Also, they were named the Jets primarily because Werblin wanted something that rhymed with Mets. LaGuardia being next door was incidental.
Hess did not choose the colors, winkepidia notwithstanding. The green green and white were in place before Hess was anything other than a very minority owner. This was Sonny W's choice, for whatever reason. Hess might very well have chosen the green and white for his gas co. to go with the football colors, but not vice versa.
http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show/1694-two-jets-take-nyc-runway-in-titans-gear “Sonny Werblin came along and changed the colors to match his birthdate, which was St. Patrick’s Day. The Jets are green and white as you know,” Eskenazi said. “The rest is history, along with Joe Namath’s knees.”
Excellent info from all you guys...... I always wondered since they Were G&W before Hess why the color scheme... I guess it would be a Great time to get New Colors w/ A new stadium! I got some pix of uni's I made on APF. I'll try and post em....
