Good question! I've always assumed it was because of Leon Hess and his Hess gas stations. They were/are green and white themed.

    Anyone know? :)

Wikipedia has Hess Gas stations as the source of the team's colors.

This is probably the best explanation. That and the fact that, when the old AFL Titans became the new NFL Jets, most of the other colors where gone... certainly the reds, blues (reds and blues), yellows (golds) and various other combinations of the same.

True, but they switched names and colors before moving to the NFL.

I think I read in the Gerald Eshkenazi book on the history of the Jets that Sonny Werblin changed them to green and white because he was born on St. Patrick's Day.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Werblin

Werblin was the primary owner when the consortium bought the team in 1963, so I assume he would've had the authority to choose the team's colors.

I would guess that Hess subsequently decided his oil company would also be green and white, in synch with his football team, but I can't find any confirmation on that.

I'm not looking forward to us wearing the Titans uniforms, personally. If it's anything like the Eagles looked on Sunday I could live without it.

Founder Leon Hess desired a clean look for his filling stations compared to local garages. Thus he chose a color scheme of green and white for them. These colors later became the colors of the New York Jets football team when he acquired them.

I think that's the reason and playing next to Laguardia is how they got their new name.

Leon Hess wasn't a big gun at the beginning of the franchise. I think it has something to do with the fact that early on they played at Shea stadium and it has a connection with the Irish green associated with the name.

Hess wanted his gas stations to be the same colour as his football team

I just moved into a new apartment right before game 1. DirecTV was here before any of my other utilities. Priorities.
