The problem is our edge rushers. Hobson does nothing but bull rush. You never see a swim move or anything unique from him and Thomas sacks the QB only if the whole pocket collapses. We could of had Spencer, Woodley, Jarvis, Crowder...It is what it is. We either need to draft Tommy Blake or Quentin Groves and/or get Terrel Suggs. Tannenbaum better start tampering or something. Another one of our problems is that our D is too nice. Look at the Ravens D for example, they act like savages just to get to the QB. Who is the intimidating figure on our side? Vilma?
We should've never made th switch to begin w/. the 4-3 is 1. Easier to teach 2. Easier to find personell for 3. What we had befre this coaching regime arrived Seems like a no brainer to me!
You do have to wonder. The first round picks in 2002, 2003 and 2004 were all spent on defensive players designed to play in a 4-3. There was no 2005 first round pick. And the 2006 first round picks were going to go on the offensive line. How does switching to a 3-4 in that situation make sense? And how does trading up in the first round of 2007 to get a neutral defensive player when you have such holes in the front 7 make sense?
Our Defense Sucks Disgusted today probably as much as everybody else. The season started the same way it ended last year... With the defense seriously letting the team down, among other things. If you can't get inspired by your QB leading a TD drive with a wrecked ankle and come up with a 3 and out and instead let them go down the whole field eating up 10 minutes, then you really really suck. The O-line was pretty pathetic also, and the special teams let us down, but usually they are great so... I'm frustrated by the 3-4. Feels like the Jets had a pretty good 4-3 here and now they will be in transition for a couple of seasons. Go back to it, or at least be much more of a hybrid with more 4-3 than 3-4 being run. Gonna have to trade Vilma and Robertson. Sick of Brady, the son of a bitch never gets touched, he has all day. He has faced 0 adversity in his career, he has had everything go his way. He got the tuck rule, he has some of the best protection in the league his whole career, and has been in the same offense his whole career. No injuries, no new offenses, no sacks. Same thing with Manning. This could be a long year...
Thomas-Robertson-Pouha-Ellis Hobson-Vilma-Barton/Harris Robertson was developing very nicely as a 3Technique DT in the 4-3 before Mangini came in, and Vilma is a known force in the middle of the 4-3
You mean Peyton? I doubt if Peyton falls into that "having everything his way throughout his whole career" category that Brady falls into. He did have a few rough years in his early career at Indy, and he has EARNED his job there (along with the respect of his teammates) whereas Brady was there to sneak in when Bledsoe got hurt.
This reminded me of the days when Herm wanted to run his 'cover 2' defense from TB and Ted Cottrell wanted to run his D from Buffalo. What the hell happened to gameplanning based on the strength of your core players?
i'd rather let Miller play than Barrett. Hell i'd let a blind retarded camel with deformed legs play instead of David Barrett....
This is exactly what I saw.....what is it?....is the defense "thinking too much" instaed of flying to the ball.... I saw WR's running through our D like it was swiss cheese... I don't think it's a 3-4 or 4-3 issue... we just looked outplayed demoralized and unconfident on D.......
What I saw was Tom Brady having an extraordinary amount of time to throw the ball. Any quarterback would've sliced the Jets D up with that much time, never mind Tom Brady. I can't believe how vanilla the defensive game plan looked. I didn't see any pre snap shifting, and certainly not enough blitzing. Granted, the Jets blitzed every once in awhile and the Pats O line was outstanding at protecting Brady when this happended. But I don't recall any max blitzes. But what really blew me away was that Mangini and Sutton never changed their defensive gameplan. I was watching the game with my friend, and we kept waiting for the Jets to change up the D. Never happened, and the overall defensive gameplan was pathetic.
I really hate when people say we need to trade Vilma. He is by far our most talented defensive player. But I do agree that he doesnt fit this defense. In my opinion, NO ONE fits this defense. Poeple always want to talk numbers and how our LBs other than Vilma put up good numbers in the defense last year. It was all clean-up jobs in my opinion. There is NO reason why 5 players on a defense should have 100 tackles in a season (Vilma, Hobson, Barton, Rhodes, Coleman). That tells me that our defense is incapable of forcing teams to go three and out and teams definately drive ALOT on us. We had some opportune turnovers last year that helped us but we are not at all sound in this scheme. An offense with Peyton Manning or Tom Brady would not be a rushing offense. An offense with Tomlinson, LJ, or a team with a bad QB would not be a passing offense. So why would a coach make a defense with Vilma and Robertson a 3-4. You play the scheme that fits your players and this one doesnt. Not to mention the defensive play calling sucks as well.
Disagree. We may not have the best pass rush, but we'd at least be in a better position to stop the run.
I think we do need to trade Vilma if we are gonna stick with this 3-4 (which we definitely are). I think what we need is a great pass rushing LB, and a big NT and we are set. If we can trade Vilma for a 1st or 2nd round pick, we can use that one of those positions (most likely the pass rushing LB) and be in position with a great 3-4 for the future. Roberston desperately needs to move to DE on the 3-4, because he fits perfectly there. Our 3-4 next year should look like... --- Ellis/Coleman -- Big NT -- Robertson/Coleman --- Thomas -- Harris -- Hobson -- Pass rushing LB
Actually you don't remember. John Abe started out like gang busters playing OLB. He had 4.5 sacks in just six games playing in less than half the snaps before he was lost for the rest of the season.
If we can find a big NT to put in the middle of the line then Vilma will play 10x better than he is now. People act like the 3-4 is designed for the ILB to have to take on offensive linemen all the time. If we had a legit NT like SD and NE have then Vilma wouldn't have to worry about 300 lbs. linemen being up in his grill throughout the whole game.
I agree he would do better. And he could be a good player in the 3-4. But I also think Harris and Hobson fit better at ILB in the 3-4. Vilma could do good, that is for sure, but I think both Harris and Hobson could do great at ILB in the 3-4. And another OLB is definitely needed, Hobson should not play there again next year.
The problem early was stopping the run. Truthfully that was resolved by the second qtr. After that the problem was the pass rush...for whatever reason we didnt see the creative blitz packages we saw in the seonc half of last year that were so successful. It killed us today.
