Revis a quick study Rookie defensive back making for lost time after lengthy contract dispute Wednesday, August 22, 2007 By COLIN STEPHENSON HEMPSTEAD, L.I. -- Clearly, Darrelle Revis is a fast learner. Seven days into his Jet career, the rookie cornerback yesterday showed he has a complete grasp on how coach Eric Mangini wants his players to handle the media. Asked if he expects to play his first game this Saturday when the Jets take on the Giants in their third preseason game, Revis said -- with a straight face -- that he didn't know. "I'm ready to play, but that's up to coach Mangini, if he wants me to play ... if he throws me in there or not," he said. "It might be one play, it might be 1,000 plays. That's up to coach." Well, let's just say chances are pretty good Revis -- the team's first-round pick who held out of camp before signing a six-year contract last Wednesday -- will make his Jets debut on Saturday. Revis spent most of yesterday's practice at left cornerback on the first defensive unit. He got the chance because starting corner Andre Dyson, who has been bothered by a sore right leg throughout training camp, was held out of practice, which was conducted outdoors in a cold and steady rain. Revis looked good in Dyson's place, flying all over the field making plays. Early in practice, during one seven-on-seven drill, he reached over from behind to knock down a pass over the middle that was intended for 6-foot-3 Frisman Jackson (who was playing the role of the Giants WR Plaxico Burress). Later, Revis leaped to bat away another throw intended for tight end Chris Baker down the sideline. In a full-squad drill, Revis slipped on the wet turf but recovered quickly and almost intercepted a hanging Marques Tuiasosopo pass for Brad Smith. "He's very explosive," safety Erik Coleman said of Revis, whom the Jets traded up 11 spots to take at No. 14 out of Pittsburgh. "Coming out of his breaks, he's quicker than I've seen in a long time. And I like his intelligence. He's very smart and he picks up on defenses. And he's very coachable. It makes it easy to work with him." Being coachable will be important to Revis' success this season, especially early on as he figures to see most of his playing time at nickel back rather than corner. He never played the nickel (where the work is mostly inside, covering the slot receiver) in college. And though he admitted "it's tough" playing nickel or dime, he said he is learning the position. "I'm progressing every day -- it's starting to come to me now," he said after what was just his fourth practice with the team. "I'm starting to make a (few) plays. I'm just trying to compete man, and work hard. I'm just trying to make the team." With $11 million in guaranteed money coming to him, that last part won't be an issue. The real question is how soon he'll work his way into the starting defense. How he plays on Saturday -- assuming Mangini deems him ready to see action, of course -- may provide clues as to whether that will be sooner or later. Coleman sounded as though he thought it would be sooner. "I'm sure he'll be ready," Coleman said of Revis. NOTES: The Jets traded linebacker Jerry Mackey to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for an undisclosed draft pick. Mackey, the great nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer John Mackey, was signed by New York on Aug. 4 after being released by Tampa Bay in June. He originally signed with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent out of Syracuse in May. http://www.silive.com/sports/advance/index.ssf?/base/Sports/1187778703257450.xml&coll=1 if he's ready to start for us after like 3 practices he should be ready to be our starter against the pats in week 1 as well. good to see the kid is doing so well.
For what its worth, Revis is a beast in the new Madden. He's 80 something overall wit 89 speed- I can't yet say though if he will shut down half the field.
lol - I'm pretty sure this is a play on the whole Ty Law thing but he really is a beast in the new Madden. INT machine.
Thx for posting this. I hope Revis continues to progress at this pace. We may not see him week one, but not far after that by the look of things, and thats a very good sign.
Man im excited about this kid. When we first made the two trades up I was wishy washy about it. But man now Im think they were GREAT MOVES.
What are Donte Stallworth and Randy Moss's speed ratings? That first game has me VERY nervous at this point.
Aaron Glenn was very fast and he had amazing jumping skills. I'll wait until I see Revis in action to start comparing the two.
I only saw him in two practices, and he got schooled today on a wet field, but I think Revis is a baller. He covers a lot of ground, will be physical, is a fluid runner, seems to be a diligent worker, and a well-grounded, kid. He reminds me of James Hasty a little, and that guy went to two pro bowls.
Jetcane and I had different takes altogether on Revis today. I saw Pennington going after Barrett all day, he saw Revis getting schooled. Revis was getting beat sometimes with short stuff, I agree on that, but he came up quickly and reacted well. Most of those quick outs went for minimal yardage gains as I recall. He didn't get beat deep, and even made some nice PD's well downfield once or twice. He's still learning, no doubt, but I think he'll be fine. To me, if one is a CB, you got schooled if you got beat deep. Barrett got beat deep today, but I don't recall Revis getting beat deep even once. He has make up speed.... one pass he deflected he bit on a move, but had the make up speed to get back on the WR and break up the play. Having said that, if you havent been to TC, understand that anyone watching will miss things, myself included. Focus on the LB's, or the D Line, or whatever.... and you miss something else. So, I'm not saying I'm right, or Jetcane is wrong.... we could both be right, sort of... we post what we see, and we see different things. I just don't recall Coles doing much of anything, and he was the WR Revis was up against all day. Aside from some quick outs.... I thought Coles had a very quiet day.
well those articles basically confirm what you just said. it's impossible for a CB to prevent short slants or screen passes without giving up bigplays. not even champ bailey is able to do that
I'm excited to see Revis start on Saturday, and think he will be a great player for years to come. That being said, lets not start sucking eachother's d***s just yet, he got "promoted" due to the injury to Dyson.
