Thomas Jones injury just brings home to me how precarious fans hopes are balanced between success and failure. Whilst early indications suggest that Jones will be back for opening day I wonder how many fans like me baulked when the headline "Jones Injured" appeared. It brings back some painful memories to me like the NFL.COM headliner "BLUE JET" following Giants and Jets game a few years back. It still turns my stomach over as I think about Chad walking off the field with a towel over his hand his season and mine wrecked! There have been plenty more, Chads shoulder, Vinny's leg in preseason, man we have been dealt some bad cards! So whats your painful memory regarding Jets injuries?
Dennis Byrd.....No more has to be said! But two others that my family still talks about every season. Bruce Harper....I was in my teens and my Dad, my brother and I would get autographs after every home game. We met Bruce Harper who got hurt in the game, he was on crutches, but was really cool to hang out wioth us for a couple of minutes. He swore the injury wasn't that bad, that the would be back in a week or two.......HE NEVER PLAYED ANOTHER DOWN AGAIN.... Freeman McNeil (Mc Rib)...I believe it was against the Colts and Freeman went to block a LB and broke the guys leg. He was so shaken up he ran poff the field and was visibly sick on the sidelines...
This was a deliberate mistake because I knew would pull me for it! Well spotted, I guess I'm still in denial about that game.
Testaverde in '99 because we had such high hopes, it was the first game and because I happened to be at that game. When he went down you could hear a pin drop in that stadium and I remember thinking "we are F-ing screwed". Keyshawn's profanity filled tirade after the game reflected exactly how I felt.
And remember when John Abraham had an upset tummy and took himself out of a playoff game? But we're not the only team to get snake bit. Deon Sanders stubbed his little toe once and was out for 3 years. And Jack Dempsey CUT OFF A BROKEN LITTLE TOE ON HIS KICKING FOOT BY HIMSELF in the locker room an hour before game time and then went out and kicked TWO 60 yard field goals. He was a Mangini Guy.
I think this has to be it for me. Vinny's injury obliterated the team's chances in what I think was the year with the highest expectations for a SB I can remember. Dennis Byrd, obviously a more devastating, serious injury is right here too. Another that comes to mind is Clark Gaines' severely broken leg (compound fracture!) against NE in 1980, because I was at Shea that day and always liked Gaines. At the time he held the AFC record for most receptions in a game (17) and had been the team's MVP one year. The injury essentially ended his career, although he did attempt to come back and was picked up by KC when left unprotected at the end of the 81 season. Never the same though. He's was one of the few bright spots on some very bad teams in the late 70's.
Mine would be the Vinny injury in 99. Phil -bad luck Sims is talking and goes “if Vinny testedverde go down the jets season is over " Or something to that effect and Pop down goes vinny!. Any important game he's broad casting when the Jets are playing I Cringe. He also did the same this to Curtis. A stat was read about how little Curtis fumbles and wouldn’t ya know it "Fumble".
I wonder if some our older fans can recall back in the eighties a self inflicted injury to Al Toon I think, which was a result of our over exuberant celebrations. Back in these days when we scored a TD the guys used to "clash" helmets together and some times they got a bit carried away. I mean really whacking each other. I'm sure it was Toon who sustained a neck injury leading coach Walton to stopping this type of celebration.
