well, because obviously the 1969 team is the greatest team. What year would you say had the second best Jets team in history?
I'd say 1998, hands down. Once Vinny got in there and they got rolling they went 12-1. All other teams in Jet history would slip up in crucial games and cost themselves a division, a bye or both, the 98 team didn't do that. They had a tough December schedule with games at Miami and at Buffalo six days apart and won both to ice the division with a week to spare. We haven't been that good before or since.
gonna show my age here...... 1. 68-69 2. 82-83 3. 98-99 4. 67-68 5. 86-87 IMO - that 82-83 had alot of talent on both sides of the ball - and if they would have beaten miami they would be at the top - even if they had lost to the skins. another very talented team was 86-87 but injuries and coaching, IMO, was the killer. 98-99 - very interesting team cause there was talent - KJ, martin, lewis jone, etc etc but alot of veteran type journeymen that only a parcells and belichek and turn into an AFC championship appearance. jil
1998 no doubt...................Less than a half away from a Super Bowl win, we would have destroyed the Falcons. 1986 was a good year, all the injuries in December to our defense killed our season. Ken O'brien, Toon and Walker were lethal in 86.
1998. And to be consistent, the #1 team would be 1968, not 1969. It's actually interesting how the 1969 team is never mentioned by anyone, yet they almost beat the eventual SB champs in the playoffs.
Do you really mean 67-68? They were 8-5-1, and lost 3 of their last 4 games to finish second in the division by a game. The 1969 team was certainly more successful.
I loved the 80s teams but they were flawed. The 1982-83 team was only 6-3 and blew the season finale, that's why they had to go on the road for three playoff games. No team that lost to Miami three times can be considered better than the 1998 team. The 1986 team might have been the one, at least through 11 games, but they lost five straight to end the season and they were poorly coached on top of being decimated by injuries. As far as regular seasons go, a largely overlooked year is 1985, they went 11-5 and that was after dropping their opener 31-0 at the LA Raiders. Only the 1998 team won more games, the trouble was Miami went 12-4 so we had to play the Wild Card game vs New England--three AFC East teams went to the playoffs that year, the other two met in the AFC title game.
The sad thing is, the franchise has desperately tried to fill it several times ever since. Johnnie Mitchell, Kyle Brady, Anthony Becht and even free agent busts like Eric Green have all fallen through. It goes to show how rare a quality pass catching tight end truly is
True. Mitchell, Brady and Becht were all first round picks, not to mention the one we traded for Doug Jolley.
