In yesterday's press conference, Mangini discussed Chad calling his own plays. Evidently Schotty at times will send a couple of plays in for Chad to adjust at the line as he sees fit, and other times Chad calls his own. Clemens obviously doesn't have that luxury [yet]. I'm just curious what percentage of qbs in the league do call their own plays, and who they are. I could probably guess Peyton and Brady and Brees and Favre....
As far as I know Manning is the only other one, though I'm sure there could be others I'm unaware of. Manning will probably be an offensive coordinator or coach when he's done. Very cool to hear Chad is doing the same thing.
i recall, reading that Big Ben is allowed to call his own plays with the new steelers offence now. i also recall reading Vince has the freedom to call a qb run, if he sees something.
They were saying on sports center the other morning that Big Ben actually helped write the new playbook.
The old QBs all used to do it. The last Jet QB I remember to do it full time was Richard Todd in 1980 and we went 4-12, then Joe Walton was brought in as OC. The famous O'Brien to Toon TD to knock the Giants out of the playoffs in 1988 was called by O'Brien at the line when he noticed a small white man in single coverage on Toon. I think John Elway called his own plays and I'm pretty sure Chad changed a lot of stuff at the line last year similar to what Peyton Manning does.
This works with Chad's greatest strength as a QB, His knowledge of the game. He puts in the work to make something like this not only happen, but thrive inside Shott's offense. Hopefully his ability to find the soft spot in a defense, and an improved running game, translates into better red zone production this year. Chad had his worst year inside the 20 last season.
It was a joke about Ben being one young son of a bitch. Especially when he won that superbowl...bastard.
I like this move as well. Shotty's schemes are uses motion and shifts so often that the D is already confused as to what is going on. If someone other than Peyton has the keen sense to switch to a different play, I think it's Chad. There are others in the league, of course, but he works just as hard with the book and film as anyone. September 9th can't come soon enough...
To my knowledge he did this last year too.....it worked pretty well...Chad is a smart player....he'll make it work.
This made it sound like he could pick whatever play he wanted out of the playbook instead of just choosing the best between three plays.
Thats what it is....i've watched the jets for many many years and last year was the first time i can remember that we had some many shifts and guys in motion...you can just tell that Chad was reading the defense and calling/changing the play on the line.....it was truly great and fun to watch...IMO
Peyton Manning uses a variety of 3 plays. he is given something like 2 pass plays and 1 run play to each side of the field every down, and he makes the call at the line as to which it will be. A lot of quarterbacks are doing this, and its something that is expected of all NFL level quarterbacks. People misinterpret the meaning of "calling own plays." They dont just go up to the line of scrimmage and rattle off 1 of the 1000 plays in the book. They get a couple options in the huddle from the offensive coordinator, and then the QB chooses what he feels is the best play at the line of scrimmage.
I know that, but there was an article that pretty much said that Chad called all of the plays on offense and Vilma called all of the plays on defense. It made it sound like they were essentially playing the OC and DC for that drive. That's a lot different than just picking a play out of 3 or 4 at the line.
