File Under: Kellen Clemens, Marques Tuiasosopo, Justin McCareins, Alvin Banks, Mike Nugent

08/05 ? Kellen Clemens found Justin McCareins all alone down the sideline for a 66-yard touchdown pass for the only score of the first quarter, giving the White Team a 7-0 lead after the first quarter of today's Green & White game
CB Andre Dyson and S Rashad Washington were the DBs in the area, but neither was close enough to challenge McCareins' dash for the goal line.
But Marques Tuiasosopo, who took over the Greens' reins from Chad Pennington in the second quarter, had a strong drive to a tying 9-yard touchdown pass to RB Alvin Banks with six minutes to play in the first half.
Tuiasosopo provided the most consistent offense of the first half by completing five of six passes for 62 yards, including three third-down conversions ? 19 yards on third-and-17 to Juan Wong plus a completion to Frisman Jackson and the TD pass to Banks.
Then after Brett Ratliff couldn't move the White offense, Green PR Jerricho Cotchery returned a rare short Ben Graham punt to the White 31, "Tui" came knocking again with another third-down completion to Alvin Banks, leading to Mike Nugent's 26-yard field goal and a 10-7 Greens lead.
But in the final 1:10 of the first half, Brad Smith completed a 10-yard pass to Jesse Pellot-Rosa to position Nugent ? having stripped off his green jersey and now wearing white ? for a 53-yard try. And "Nooge" nailed it with room to spare, sending the teams into their locker rooms with a 1-10 tie.
Other than the Clemens TD pass play, the opening period of this game-simulation practice was a defensive battle. Pennington was sacked three times, including once by Jonathan Vilma, who got past Thomas Jones. Pennington aired one ball out 44 yards in the air intended for Laveranues Coles, but S Erik Coleman was in great position to bat the pass away.
CB David Barrett had one beautiful sideline interception wiped out by one of the Pennington sacks and lost another possible pick when Erik Coleman collided with him.
DT Sione Pouha also had a sack of Clemens, who had to control a couple of errant shotgun snaps by Wade Smith.
Graham generally punted strongly ? and frequently ? in the half, with his first punt his prettiest, a full-leg drive to the White 3 that bounced straight up and had to be fielded by Justin Miller, who was downed inside the 5.
Nugent also showed that his strong-legged kickoffs of minicamp were no fluke. He seemed to get stronger as the half went on, putting kicks at the 2, 5 yards into the end zone, then 8 yards deep.
Adding to the atmosphere of the day at our still unidentified stadium, the P.A. system blared "Charge" fanfares and "J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets!" chants, the announcer read spots for the Jets-Falcons game on WCBS-TV on Friday and Jets MasterCard, and Yankees standard "Cotton Eye Joe" and Patriots standard "Crazy Train" were sampled.
Reports on the second half and postgame are ahead.

This is the Final Report: (it's a bit confusing b/c he keeps calling the Green team "white" and vice versa, but you can figure it out...)

    By Randy Lange
Lange is editor-in-chief of newyorkjets.com. He covered the Jets for 13 years for The Record of Hackensack, N.J.
08/05 — The Green Team used two touchdown passes from Kellen Clemens to Justin McCareins to open an 11-point lead and then hold on for a 24-21 victory over the White Team in the Jets' "Green & White Game" that was held at Fordham University in New York today.

The White outfit appeared to put it away when Clemens spotted McCareins behind Andre Dyson and hit him for a 39-yard score on third down, giving the Whites a 24-13 lead with 9:21 to play in the "game," that was conducted with no fans in attendance but with all the other accoutrements of an NFL game.

But Chad Pennington, who had been quiet during his earlier possessions, struck quickly to get the Green Team back to within 24-21 with 4:49 to play.

Pennington hit Chris Baker downfield for a 30-yarder to the White 25 despite the tight coverage of Victor Hobson and Justin Miller. Two plays later, Pennington hit Jerricho Cotchery going to the corner over Erik Coleman for a 20-yard score.

Then came the two-point conversion try, a Thomas Jones run into the line that appeared to be stopped short and was first ruled no good.

But "after further review" (there is no evidence of replay equipment or TV monitors in our location) the decision was reversed, Jones' run was good, and the Whites were within three points.

The game, which lasted exactly three hours in the warm but pleasantly breezy north Bronx, came down to the Greens trying to move into position for a tying Mike Nugent field goal. But Pennington could get the offense no closer than the White 47, setting up Nugent's 65-yard field goal try for the tie with 5 seconds to play. And yes, if Nugent had hit the monster kick of NFL-record proportions, the game would have gone to overtime.

But "Nooge," who was good on 26-, 53- and 48-yard field goals and boomed many of his kickoffs 5 yards deep and deeper into the end zone, while on target, came up 5 yards short of the game-tying kick.

Clemens had the best passing line, completing 14 of 18 for 205 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. For the Greens, Pennington was 19-for-30 for 186 yards, a TD pass to Jerricho Cotchery and no INTs while Marques Tuiasosopo had a crisp second quarter and finished 11-for-18 for 103, one TD and no INTs. McCareins finished with three catches for 119 yards and two TDs.

There were a bundle of sacks in the game — nine by the first defense on the White Team, two by Dewayne Robertson, and five by the Green defense, two by DT Sione Pouha. The high number was due to strictly enforcing the college halo rule to protect the QBs. The pass-heavy game plans resulted in a White yardage advantage of 275 to 238.

I'll have some of head coach Eric Mangini's remarks after the game shortly.

im psyched to Clemens in the preseason games. while this scrimmage didn't mean much, at least he didn't suck and fulfill the negative remarks recently being made about him.

I told ya.... Wade Smith is a turnover machine when he snaps in the shotgun. Anything happens to Mangold, and we're in trouble.

  13. Well that's a relief...I grew alittle concerned when I saw CP was sacked 3 times in 1 qtr of play.

But, W/ the way our Offense works w/ so much shifting, and basically leaving the front 5 to end for themselves against all kinds of fronts and blitzing, the D is bound to get in the "Halo" area, and it is up to CP or the QB to role out of the pocket.

I'd love to hear more about Charles Missant. SMITH was cut by Miami for a reason. he is average at best!
