Myself, along with many other have been extremely critical on Robertson's lack of being "The Next Sapp." To me he's only had one good year, 2004, a very good year at that, but then has just been solid, and to trade two 1st round picks, the #4 overall selection should be better than solid...So let's take a look. #4 - DeWayne Robertson: Again, a very good 2004 being alongside Ferguson, and being huge for Vilma...Also helped when Ellis and Abe were on the field together, although later that season Abe was MIA...A solid/good player, but not worthy of a Top 5 player to this point/ #6 - Jonathan Sullivan: New Orleans also traded two 1st round picks for Sullivan, and he has been a COMPLETE BUST, to the point where he is out of the NFL. Weight issues, and couldn't even revive his career in New England with Belichick for a "2nd chance." BUST!! #9 - Kevin Williams: We all remember Minny overlapping their 15 minutes, and they were still luckily able to get Kevin Williams. He is among the best DTs in football. He exploded his 1st two seasons, 10.5 sacks his rookie season, then followed that up with 11.5 in 04'. He has been a Pro-Bowler in both 2005 and 2007, and in 07', Minnesota had arguably the best run defense of all-time, also credit Pat Williams in the middle. But Kevin is a beast, can play both DE and DT and doesn't give up on plays. He recently signed 7-year extension in 06' for $50 million, $16 million guaranteed. Great pick. #12 - Jimmy Kennedy - I honestly wanted this guy at #14? When the Jets had that pick from the Coles trade. He has just been traded today to Denver for a 6th round pick!! Shows you how bad he has been in STL...Has been injured, bad play, and not a run stopper. Bad pick. A bust for the Rams. #13 - Ty Warren - I know he plays DE in the 3-4 for the Pats, but he was a DT coming into the draft, and at Texas. He has been excellent for New England being one of the best DLines in the NFL with Wilfork and Seymour. He doesn't get "glamour" stats, but it's the 3-4, he plays his role great. He is a good run stopper, and has the ability to collapse the pocket very well...He fits great in that system, and Belichick has done a great job with him. Borderline great pick, but i'll go with very very good. #25 - William Joseph - Extremely high on him seeing him in Miami on a weekly basis, but just hasn't put it all together. Isn't playing hard, has been injured, and was even beat out by Fred Robbins and a rookie, Barry Cofield last season. He isn't a bust, but he isn't that good. He doesn't stop the run very well, he has good speed, but just hasn't really shown it. Below-average player. So their you have it. Of all the DT's selected that draft, Robertson is rated the 3rd best, and he was selected the highest. Kennedy is out of STL, and Sullivan is out of the NFL... DRob is in a 3-4, so here comes the excuses of "new system" and shit...But screw it man, when you're tabbed "Baby Sapp" and say "Can't Nobody Block Me" and some below-average OLineman dominated you this past season, i'm sorry, but you have not been worth what the Jets gave up for you. Shut me up DRob...Until then, i'll remain skeptical. P.S....Thanks for your autograph on my Jets hat and a T-Shirt after the Miami game on Christmas night:up:
I've never been a fan of the Robertson trade either. I would have been much happier with something like this: Picks we gave up for D-Rob: 13- Troy Polamalu 22- Nnamdi Asomugha - Has been getting better every year, 8 pick this season too. Plus this would start a nice young secondary along with Troy since, if I'm right, we had old Donnie Abraham and shit Fred Beasley at the time 116- Ian Scott - Rumors were that we were going after him this offseason. He has been a backup/spot duty player but seems to have the ability to be a starter. Plus he would have filled the hole D-Rob was brought in to fill or Asante Samuel - Great season last year, alot of fans want us to go after him now. Also, Troy, Nnamdi, and Asante is a pretty decent secondary
BS...I count Warren as COMING out as a DT...Now he is a DE...Either position, he is a helluva lot better than Robertson.
See but that's hindsight... At that time I would of loved Jimmy Kennedy at 13 and Boss Bailey at 22... Yeesh, glad I don't manage the Jets.
Yea, I was pretty high on Bailey coming out of college. I was pretty pissed off when we made the trade and I realized we wouldn't get him. I do realize my other post was hindsight, but that would've been pretty nice
We used TWO 1st round picks to get our "ok" DT.... Plus a 4th rounder.. It was a doomed deal from the start and hard for Drob to live up to... We could have had Ty Warren AND Another stud.... I personally don't think you sell your soul for a penetrating type DT anyway - It's the HUGE NT Run stuffer type that's like gold regardless of your system......
kevin williams does have some character and health issues. plus he wasnt that great the past 2 seasons.
Stop with the D-Rob for TWO first round picks already. They swapped picks to move up some 7-8 picks and gave up ONE first round selection. This is just as wrong as saying the Jets traded a 1st round pick in the Jolley trade when they swapped down and actually never gave up the pick. Stop trying to rewrite history.
In the end did the Jets have their original pick after aquiring Jolley? No. Therefore, they gave it up. If someone has something that you once had, they either took it from you, or you gave it to them. You will probably go with the defense of, neither happened, it was a trade. OK, but in a trade, the general principle is: "I'll give you _______ and you give me _______"
You guys really put too much into this "1st round pick" status. Really - TOO MUCH. Talent gets evaluated and they choose people the best way they can. It is a crap shoot that these guys pan out. When you have 1st round flops and Hall of Famers picked out of the 6th round you have to realize that there is only so much you can do in picking the right people. That being said, I do really like the way the current HC/FO looks at players. I think that by judging them highly on character and smarts along with the physical abilities will serve us better in the long run. I am just glad DRob didn't turnout to be a bust. So he's 3rd best in class. He's out there and contributing. You can't expect to jackpot on every pick. It just isn't dealing with reality thinking that way.
Agreed 100%. At this point, we should just be happy that he's starting and contributing, as we can't berate him for that trade and pick (blame Bradway). If he keeps progressing from the point where he left off at the end of last season after his second half surge, he will have developed into an above average DT, and that's all I can ask for, honestly. I still think that he's playing out of position and should be a DE in the 3-4, so I hope that Pouha can step up to shift him over there at some point.
D rob does alot of little things well that he does not get credit for. He's very quick, powerful and compact and gives interior linemen fits cause he gets his hands under their pads so consistently. If his arms were 6 inches longer, he'd be completely unstoppable...but unfortunately he has short arms which restrains him from getting consistent seperation. Simply put, He's a top 15 tackle...who should be top 5. W/ that said, we can do ALOT worse, and frankly he's a top 3 player on our D.
He's still very young, and I think he's only getting better once he starts to gel with the defense. He got better as the season went on last year. I'm more disappointed in Ellis.
If he played in a 4-3 system, he would line up as a DT all 4 downs. However, since the Pats are a 3-4 team he lines up at the DE position, but still has the same responsibility of a 4-3 DT. Same goes for Seymore. Also don't forget about Corey Redding. He was 3rd round selection from Texas to the Lions. Past season, he had 8 sacks. He did that, despite getting doubled all the time due to Shaun Rogers only playing 6 games last year. The believe the Lions franchised him. He sure would look nice playing DE in our 3-4 system if he can get out of Detroit.
Yes but keep in mind, that at that time, we were a purely cover 2/4-3 team that was looking to add the "3T" guy to take our d to the next level(or ANy respectable level at that stage). D rob and Kevin Williams were the only 2 that truly fit that bill.
Why would I be kidding? Those, were in fact, all players that would have been available with the picks we gave up. And I would, in hindsight, have rather had those players than D-Rob
