Revis Keeps His Head Above Water
Published: Thu, June 7, 1:34pm EST

    By Randy Lange

File Under: Darrelle Revis, Justin McCareins, Nick Mangold, Chris Baker

change font email article 06/07 — Darrelle Revis continued to work with the first nickel defense in the slot and while the top pick still looks smooth as silk, he said he's been doing his share of swimming.

"I'm learning," Revis said after today's OTA practice. "Andre Dyson and Kerry Rhodes and the other guys are helping me. Even Jonathan Vilma pulled me to the sideline last week and had some words for me."

And coordinator Bob Sutton's playbook, the rookie admitted, "was a little tough. You've got to get in there and learn it."

But Revis is far from a nervous first-year player, showing fluid hips and coverage skills befitting his 14th-pick-of-the-draft status. In fact, he said he's "excited" to be a Jet.

"This is a great group of guys, guys who've been around," he said. "Last year we were 10-6 and in the playoffs. We're just trying to improve on that. Right now I just want to compete and do the best I can."

    Other late OTA highlights:

    ● WR Justin McCareins continues his strong off-season. After his catch in the first half of practice, he got deep down the middle to gather in a perfect Kellen Clemens 30-yarder just ahead of coverage by free agent S Leonard Peters.

    ● Nick Mangold did actually put his helmet on and make snaps to Chad Pennington in late 7-on-7 work. Asked if that was his first activity of the OTA period that began Memorial Day week, he said, "I don't remember. That's my story and I'm sticking to it."

    ● During that drill, TE Chris Baker got a couple of play-action passes from Pennington. Then Clemens came on and one of his plays was to throw a ball to a new tight end, wearing No. 60 and knee braces. Yes, OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson went in motion and had good position on LB Anthony Schlegel. But Clemens' pass sailed high.

    ● Brad Kassell and rookie David Harris rotated with the first defense at ILB. ... Mike Nugent was wide left on back-to-back 50-yard field goals before ending the practice by thumping a 51-yarder down the middle. ... TE/LS James Dearth said the win by his group in Tuesday's New York Jets Charity Golf Classic Classic is in no way an indication that he's the best golfer on the Jets, but he said he'll be playing more golf now. ... Charley Casserly, the former Texans GM now providing gameday personnel observations on CBS-TV, was at practice.

definitely dont like mangolds developement. im sure its just soreness so theyre letting him take it easy for now but his response made it sound like he had conspiracy's to hide from the govt.

i definitely like brick lining up at TE since he looks more the part than a LT. not to mention it would give teams headaches figuring out if it was a bluff or not.

Nice. Harris already getting snaps with the first team. J-mac looking to contribute this year, Baker getting some looks and Dbrick in motion lol. Got to enjoy this.

Mangold has plenty of time to heal up for Training Camp so I won't worry about until he misses parts of TC.

I'd love to see D'Brick catch a TD pass this season.

edit: On Jets Nation last week they were showing film of the OTA's and Mangold was snapping the ball.

To be honest McCareins is a pretty good receiver and i personally think that him and chad didnt have the right chemistry of just receiver to QB and vice versa situation where you just know what somebodys gonna do by a look or a movement.. Peyton and Marvin Harrison come to mind!!! I think this year he will do big things for us if they decided to keep him around. He is overshadowed by Coles and Cotchery

We'll see, beating a UDFA safety whose just learning the system should not be part of his highlight package....

    lets be real

Peyton and Marvin Harrison come to mind!!! I think this year he will do big things for us if they decided to keep him around. He is overshadowed by Coles and Cotchery

justin takes a while to get up the field and separate from the db.. by the time this happens he is too deep for chad's arm...the real question is how j mac looks with kellen at qb.....and what mangini decides to do with him if he looks great.seems to me he is getting quite a bit of attention these days.and unless chad can now throw a decent 30 yd bomb instead of floaters,he must be getting those passes from qb's not named chad pennington..

I hope that they are just giving Mangold time off so he doesn't wear out and that he doesn't have kind of serious injury. Of all the guys to go down, he would probably be the worst casualty right now.

Actually it's an awful idea. Why? If you line him up eligible, now he has to sit out a play before he can come back in ineligible. So, let's say 3rd and 1 he lines up as TE.... we get the 1st, now he has to sit out (or play TE again)... not a good idea with your starting LT

D'Brick is making millions to block, and shutdown speed rushers. Why sacrifice one of your most important lineman and best lineman with one simple blow to the knee? Bad idea as JI2004 already stated.

Jumbo Elliot? The guy was a Parcells favorite and was a key player in what I consider the second most memorable Jets moment.

But it was a gimmick play, not a thing that would be used all the time.... and Jumbo was at the end of his career.

and a backup at the time.

I dont like that move for Brick either.

Now if you want to tell me that mangini would use Adrian as a TE occassionally, that would be a better option then Brick.

Especially since he was a TE in college if I am not mistaken... at least for a little while.
