    Starting D

So this is the Starting Defense:

    3-4

    Ellis / Robertson / Coleman
    Barton / Vilma / Harris / Thomas
Dyson / Rhodes / Coleman or Smith / Revis

    4-3

Ellis / Robertson / Pouha / Coleman or Thomas
    Barton / Vilma / Hobson
Dyson / Rhodes / Coleman or Smith / Revis

Hmmmm, im not sure how they feel about barton on the outside. Before the year i thought that would be a good fit, but they obviously didn't feel that way this past season.

    Can Barton play OLB well?

I still have questions across the board on the line in the 3-4. The linemen are all small for the way the positions are evolving in the NFL at the moment.

Not to say there's not some talent there but 325 lb NT's and 310 lb ends is where the league is moving as the offensive linemen get bigger and bigger. The Jet's line right now is short a good 50 lbs.

I think a good part of Bartons problem on the outside last year was there was no inside presense, at LB to make tackles... so he cheated...

Ellis and Coleman are described across the NFL as PROTOTYPE DE's in the 3-4...

Barton was inside most of the year. Hobson was on one flank and Thomas on the other.

I also think he can do a decent job in coverage when he's not asked to do it on every down. Definately can be a good compliment to thomas on the other side if Harris makes the kind of impact we all hope he can.

Barton could very well be cut by June.

    Why are you removing Hobson?
He had a helluva year and was hittin' everything...

    3-4
    Ellis - Robertson - Coleman
    Thomas - Harris - Vilma - Hobson

    4-3
    Ellis - Robertson - Pouha - Thomas
    Hobson - Vilma - Barton

Assuming Pouha is the best NT we come up with, and Barton is still on the team. Harris has never played 4-3 and is surely not going to replace Vilma at MLB in those sets. If we lose Barton and still want to run a 4-3 we'll be low on options at OLB. I'm sure someone can step in, but they'll be playing out of position.

    DE -- Coleman/ Kimo
    NT -- Robertson/ Pouha
    DE -- Ellis/ whoever

    OLB/DE --Thomas/ Bowens
    ILB -- Vilma
    ILB -- Harris / Schlegel
    OLB -- Hobson/ Bowens

Barton wasnt even playing every series last year. Why would they keep him and pay him 3.5 million to play part time when they just gave up the big part of this years draft on for an ILB? On top of that he is a hold over from the old regime, not much of a Mangini guy, and the oldest LB on the team.

If Harris is the deal (and for the Jets sake I hope he is) you play him ASAP. There are two other guys who can be his back up on the roster -- Kassell and Schlegel -- who cost a lot less.

One alternate thought: Anybody think the Jets might move Harris to OLB -- he's lighter than Hobson, but taller and quicker?

    Left Ends
    Orpheus Roye 6'4" 315 lbs - Cleveland
Ty Warren 6'5" 300 lbs - New England
    Aaron Smith 6'5" 298 lbs - Pittsburgh
    Marcus Spears 6"4" 298 lbs - Dallas
Bryant Young 6'3" 297 lbs - San Francisco
Luis Castillo 6'3" 290 lbs - San Diego
    Shaun Ellis 6'5" 285 lbs - NYJ

    Average weight = 297 lbs

    Right Ends
    Robaire Smith 6'4" 328 lbs - Cleveland
Richard Seymour 6'6" 310 lbs - New England
Igor Olshansky 6'6" 309 lbs - San Diego
    Chris Canty 6'7" 300lbs - Dallas
Kenyon Coleman 6'5" 295 lbs - NYJ (Dallas in 06)
Marques Douglas 6'2" 286 lbs - San Francisco
    Brad Keisel 6'5" 285 lbs - Steelers

    Average weight = 301 lbs

Note that the guys dragging down the weight on the right side are both 30 year old journeymen who are on the way out in their respective rotations. The lightest guy on the left side is also the oldest, Shaun Ellis.

Coleman and Ellis were prototype size maybe a half decade ago.

seymour is an inch taller and 15 pounds heavier than coleman, that is negligible

and ty warren in same height and 15 lbs heavier than ellis

15 lbs on a 6' 5 frame is not much. that is a weekend of good eating

Yeah but they're BOTH small for the position. That's the problem

I mean San Diego gets by with a very good light DE in Luis Castillo at 290, but they've got a horse in Olshansky on the other side.

    The Jet's horses are ponies.

  19. It could end looking like this...

    4-3

    Ellis- Pouha- D rob- Thomas
    Barton- Vilma- Hobson
    Dyson- Revis
    Rhodes- Smith

    3-4

    Ellis- Pouha- D rob
    BT- Vilma- Harris- Hobson
    Dyson-Revis
    Rhodes- Smith

    How about:

    3-4

    DRob - Pouha - Coleman

Ellis may be the biggest problem in the 3-4.
