- The teams in the top 20 range are finding players w/ equal value to Olsen who fill bigger needs. There just aren't alot of teams this year in desperate need of a tight end. Their has to be a healthy balance between value and need, and at those spots, sure, Olsen may not be the right selection. W/ that said, I strongly doubt at # 25, there will be anyone even CLOSE to having the same big board value that Olsen does. - Your point about Olsen/Gates I'll state my point in a different way: Many questioned Vernon Davis' blocking ability heading into the draft last year, he TOO is a similar style TE to Olsen. Why is it a different criteria regarding him, when it comes to blocking criticisms? B/c he was considered a top 5/10 pick rather than a top 15/20? - Yes Pennington often uses TE's as security blankets/ dump offs. Our OC has been on record stating he'd love to implement more 2- TE sets which in the modern day NFL can cause defense's fits. Unfortunately we have Baker, and Sean Ryan, who offers absolutely nothing more than blocking ability. Olsen is yet another "dump off" option we could add, and since when was a TE who is a legit deep thread and who ca stretch the field a bad thing? - Finally, For all of those who envy the way the Patriots handle the draft/player personell: in 2 seperate years, the Patriots took TE's in the first round (Including trading up for one) despite other needs, b/c they truly felt those players were BPA, and Tight ends can be so effective when utilized correctly. That worked out pretty well for them wouldn't ya say?
I thought Vernon Davis has an opportunity to be a game changer on the football field. He is a freakish talent so I look at him like a Gates. I don't see Olsen as that, however if we draft him, I hope I'm wrong about it.
Sinorice Moss on players coming out this year from the U: -- Brief scouting reports on three of his old Miami teammates from Sinorice Moss... On LB Jon Beason: "Athletic, good hitter, gets to the QB. He'd help us out a lot." On TE Greg Olsen: "He's the real deal. Different than Shockey. Olsen just goes out and plays." On S Brandon Meriweather: "Never afraid to thump somebody, anytime, anywhere." i honestly dont knwo why you guys dont want him...
Because he was never a dominant player in college? Because he's the best of a weak crop of TE's? Note that the word weak includes the guy at the top, otherwise they say "weak after Olsen". Because the Jets have lousy luck drafting TE's? Because the Jets have real needs on the defensive side that dwarf the potential difference between having Greg Olsen and Chris Baker on the field? Because all the talking heads want us to take him and I have NEVER seen them be right about something Jet's-related when they all agreed.
We don't want Olson--We don't need another TE who can't block. Look at NE--As soon as they lose blocking TE Graham they IMMEDIATELY sign blocking TE Brady. Terry Boobway is finally out as GM--why should we spend a #1 on another Jolley????????????????????????????????
