How could the Jets spend another 1st round pick on the offensive line in two years? I think taking a Guard in the first round this year could be classified as a "luxury" pick for the New York Jets. Do need a Guard? Sure we do...Will the Jets draft one? More than likely... Just not at 25...I think we are as likely to take a Guardat 25 as we are to take a WR 25... I think the Jets need to focus on BPA and I think Blalock would be a bit of a reach at 25. I am not as high on Aaron Ross as I used to be now that I heard he will be 25 when the season begins...yuck. I love Chris Houston, Greg Olsen, Anthony Spencer, Justin Harrell and more. I think I have made up my mind that Blalock will not be called.
I think Anthony Spencer is a viable alternative, but I think Blalock is the pick because he's smart, durable, a good student, strong and offers position flexibility. He might be a slight reach at 25 for some, but I think the Jets view those attributes I mentioned quite highly and that will be enough to make them see value in him at 25. As for needs. Yes, OG is not the most pressing need we have and I would ahve no problem if Anthony Spencer were the pick, as he has similar attributes AND fills a position of greater need, but OG is a need. We need to plan for the near future on the O-line, we play ina division of great D-lines and we just traded for a RB who needs a strong in-line O-line. But thena gain, I'm one of the people who has made up his mind that Blalock WILL be called.
I'm not sure anymore. Following the New England mold, we would tend to build from the inside out meaning the OL and DL and TEs are positions to target in the first.
Haha...its pretty interesting how many people have "decided" on Justin Blalock, including myself. A guy over at JI is guaranteeing that the Jets select Blalock... I have said before I won't mind the pick, but I just don't see it happening.
It is very tough to predict this year... CB is a pretty big need and there will be guys available, but normally you wouldn't think Eric Mangini would spend a first rounder on the position because of coaching guys over in NE into good players. OLB is a position the Jets could look to, to further boost the pass rush, but guys like Andre Wadsworth and David Bowens were added to play OLB. DE is postion that the Jets needed help in the worst way last season. They added Coleman, but is he alone enough?
If you could say with any assurance that James Marten would be available on 59 then passing on Blalock and Grubb on 25 becomes the thing to do. Unfortunately Marten is probably 50/50 to be off the board by 59. I'd much rather have a big defender on the 25, preferably somebody who would contribute heavily in the pass rush.
I don't see most Free Agent Signings as answers to long term problems which means I wouldn't let signing David Bowens allow you to feel good about our pass rush. These are short term fixes until the rookies we bring in are ready to take over.
Anthony Spencer would be a great pick if we had depth at OL for our late second round picks. There is however depth for DEs and DE/OLB tweeners into the second round. What guard is going to be there? Ramirez? His knee is a liability. Spencer would be the luxury pick. I would personally go with Grubbs over Blalock but would be happy with either.
we cant think back to last year. If blalock is the guy who will make the most impact on the team this year then no question the jets must draft him. They cant take last year's draft into play and think "oh man although this guy will make a big impact we dont want to get ANOTHER O-Lineman" every year, teams draft whoever would make the most positive impact on the team period.
Marten is a RT and probably no better than a mid 3rd rounder, you probably mean his linemate Beekman. If so I definitely agree, Spencer and Beekman would be a tremendous first two picks.
The word on Marten is that he probably goes from LT to G for his first season and maybe second and then to RT. And he's going to go between 49 and 63 is my guess. He's climbing a lot of boards.
He may be undersized, but he may be the answer to all of the speculation. He also has a name you see on the Pro Bowl roster. Anthony Spencer. Looks good on the back of a jersey too.
well put. our offense is really one more o-lineman away from being one of the best in the league. Yea, another receiver would be nice and a dynamic TE is hard to find which leaves an unbelievable blocker (with upside), Blalock, as the most logical pick
I agree with you I just don't see how you can put 3 first round picks on your O line. I'd be very happy with Spencer or Ross at 25.
Agreed. I love Spencer, but we could get someone who's very solid at the end of round 2, while the drop off from Blalock and Grubbs to, say, Beekman is much, much steeper.
I would always prefer a lineman to a cornerback. We still haven't proven we can stop the run or run the ball and until we can do both of those you don't go taking cornerbacks in the first round. The bottom line is that cornerback is a position you can draft in the mid rounds and develop the player into a good system player. It's important to find guys that can play in the system, can tackle, do what's asked on a given play. It's nice if the guy can cover man to man but realistically no one can do that in the nfl every play. So you want smart players who are coachable who have a knack for the ball. You don't need a freak who runs a 4.25 but has no ability to find the ball or tackle. I would prefer we take a lineman on either side of the ball or a pass rusher. Guys I like are Tony Ugoh, Blalock, Grubbs, Jamaal Anderson, Carriker, Spencer, Woodley, Robinson. If we can't stop the run what's the value in drafting a cornerback in the first round this year?
