Dont know if I agree with some of this but here's fox's take. # New York Jets The Jets' success in 2006 was unexpected, and proof of what can happen when a good coach, health, an easy schedule, and some luck can turn into. While the schedule will be harder and the luck is likely to dissipate, there are plenty of the reasons to think the Jets will improve. Offensively, Jerricho Cotchery's emerged into a very good wide receiver, Thomas Jones has been acquired to provide stability at running back, and D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold will benefit from another year of experience on the line. Defensively, the team will have a full year with the 3-4 defense underneath their belt; it's finding players that fill in the gaps here that the Jets should aim for with their picks in 2007. # Top five areas of need: 1. Defensive tackle: While the Jets have a former top-five selection at defensive tackle with Dewayne Robertson, he simply doesn't have the skillset to play nose tackle in a 3-4 alignment. He might be useful outside, but the Jets need to commit to playing him there. Using their first round pick on a nose tackle would allow him to stay there. 2. Cornerback: Former second-round pick Justin Miller has matured into an excellent return man, and he's only 23, but he's struggled to grasp the difference between being an athlete and a cornerback. While Deion Sanders can get away with that, very few other corners can, and Miller isn't one of them. It may turn out that Miller's more suited to play in the slot, and that the Jets need to draft a bigger corner to play outside. 3. Tight end: Incumbent Chris Baker is a mediocrity, with the Jets already having attempted to replace him once (the ill-fated trade for Doug Jolley). Having a very good tight end would be an even more intriguing proposition for the Jets when you consider Chad Pennington's lack of arm strength. 4. Safety: While Erik Coleman enjoyed an excellent rookie season, he's struggled to retain that form over the last two years. Kerry Rhodes has shown himself to be a playmaker at free safety, but Coleman probably has one more year to prove himself as a starter. 5. Outside linebacker: While the Jets' front three did them no favors last year, neither did Eric Barton or Victor Hobson. Both struggled to fill gaps or shed blockers last year, and while upgrading here isn't essential, it is inevitable if the Jets want to turn their run defense around. # Who they hope falls to them: Posluszny would be able to fill in across multiple spots in the Jets linebacking core, and give Jonathan Vilma a tackling buddy in the second level. If either of the draft's prominent defensive tackles fall to them, the Jets should flip their wig, as it'll be a new day rising for their awful rush defense. # Who they will have to settle for: Justin Harrel is the draft's third best defensive tackle, but he's not as good as Branch and doesn't have as much upside as Okoye. He'd still be better than Kimo von Oelhoeffen in the middle. # Who they may have their eyes on in later rounds: A strong safety to potentially replace Coleman will be in the back of the Jets' minds; Sabby Piscitelli, a rising prospect at the position over the last few months, might be the Jets target in the third round.:gpc: :finssuck: :hackett:
Fox is just from another universe or something, on everything. I spent like 2 years watching the Rupert Murdoch view of the world and wondering if it was just my politics that prevented me from seeing any reason involved in their discourse, but it wasn't. Complete misinformation in every phase of communication is their MO. Thank god it's 2007 not 1937...
Chris Baker is a good tight end, I honestly think it's Chad who just doesn't look to the TE very often. He's not Shockey or one of these guys but he's good.
How in God's name can they say safety and TE are positions of need over OG and RT? Did they not notice the Jets piss pour run game last year?
Nice backhanded compliment to start the article-- and still he managed to go downhill from there. About the only thing I got from this was a reminder that Miller left school early, and is still only 23. He should not be written off as a potential starter this year.
fox sports is really starting to piss me off. i cant sweat it enough on how much i hate them and their coverage, their NHL coverage is 10 times worse then the NFL coverage.
fox is right on 4 out of 5. the OLB hmmm we could use a starting OLB to match vilma, and rotate. but chris baker is a good tight end.
I didn't read past the part where they alluded to Deion Sanders not being able to tell the difference between an athlete and a corner.
Oh Fox. You never cease to amaze me. Top needs: -Safety! With one of the best Free Safeties in the league and a solid and consistant if only average starter at Strong Safety as well as depth at both positions, the Jets really, really need to address Safety in the draft, whereas a leaking (RG, RT), aging (LG, RT) and unexperienced (LT, C) offensive line doesn't need to be changed. -Defensive Tackle! With a solid, young, and athletic (however slightly undersized) NT and two old and overpaid DEs where one is average at best and the other non-existant on most downs, NT is another glaring need for the Jets. Obviously the signing of a single veteran career backup DE to the rotation has fixed all of the Jet's problems at Defensive End, freeing the team up to draft one of the numerous prototypical Nose Tackles available in the first round of this draft. -Outside Linebacker! With two solid OLBs in Bryan Thomas and Victor Hobson and lots of depth and competition added this offseason, the Jets should make like Jon Gruden in a Quarterback shop and mortgage their home to bring in as many OLBs as they possibly can. The more cap room and roster slots taken up at this position, the better that the entire team will be. Do these guys even fricking read what they write or listen to what they say? Aren't there supposed to be editors or something?
All of the editors at Fox are paid to promote a particular political and philosopical agenda. The sports department is just to draw a male audience in to be exposed to the other stuff. The reason quality control is so poor in Fox Sports is that they just don't care. They put their money elsewhere and for different purposes.
I think he played there a little when they moved DRob out to DE on some plays. He played NT worse than he played DE if that was even possible.
