I was just wondering Vilma is 230 lbs do you guys think he can gain an extra 10-15 lbs without sacrificing his speed ? ILB are usually 250 or above.

    Thoughts?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Vilma was the right weight for the 3-4?

He can, but he really doesn't need to. As long as he has a bigger ILB next to him, he can survive at 230 Ibs. Donnie Edwards did it in San Diego. Here, we have Eric Barton alongside him. He played just fine at ILB last season.

What he really needs, rather than 10-15 Ibs., is better, more consistent DL play. Robertson adjusted more as the year went on, and if continues to work at it, he should be more than OK at NT. He certainly has the size... I trust Shaun Ellis will step up more this season, even though he wasn't bad this year. I really hope that Kenyon Coleman can step in and play well. It would make a huge difference.

Oh, yeah, Vilma will be fine in 2007.

Agreed on the nose tackle. Dewayne is not Jamal Williams. A bigger line will help him immensely. All too often, Von Oldhoffen and Hamilton were getting blown off the ball. I don't think that will be as big an issue with Coleman.

Sure, lets blame every but Vilma for his subpar play.
Vilma had an off year. Thats his fault.

Hopefully he is hitting the weights and will be able to "Man Up" in the trenches a little better this year.

I think he should be trying to put on 10 or 15 yeah. But then again, is weight gonna be what helps him shed blockers, or is it more a matter of strength and technique?

I personally don't think that he will stay with the Jets, he is too valuable as an individual talent to be put in this role in a 3-4.

Vilma's talent is allowing him to hold the fort at MLB until Mangini gets around to replacing him with a real 3-4 MLB.

    hafta "weight" and see

  13. Vilma doesn't exactly need to add anymore weight. he just needs to get stronger at the point of attack, and learn to react alil better within the 3-4 reads. He got significatly better as the season went on, and i believe that will continue onto next year.

The 3-4 is a different animal than the 4-3 and requires more gap responsibility than I believe Vilma was used to in the past, that being said, Vilma stepped it up in the 2nd 1/2 of the season because he himself got used to the 3-4 and everyone around him got their weight up and did what they were supposed to do.

I believe that Vilma is so athletically inclined that he can survive in any package as long as he has the time to improve. Mangini himself noted that this was Vilma's D, it was HE (Vilma), that placed people in the right gaps and right angles which was instrumental in the vast improvement in the second half and he was also instrumental in helping Kerry Rhodes to improve, the kid has a nose and a mind for football. Period.

Vilma will be just fine in '07

Most analysts compared Vilma's year to that of Teddy Bruschi's when the Pats made the switch to the 3-4. It takes a year to adjust to, and then they play like the played in years past, which means Vilma will be the game-breaker he was in the Herm era.

He He they don't count in this thread

So many people willing to trade/give up on Vilma because of his size/weight/experience. Give the guy a chance , hes a smart football player and a leader. If he can't do the job I'm sure Mangini will be the first one that Vilma tells.
Lets wait and see what happens in the draft and how the '07 season pans out before we hang him out to dry.

They improved in the second half but it wasn't a vast improvement. They still can't stop the run. You also need to look at who those teams were that we played in the second half.
