This guy Salfino doesn't seem too pleased , seems hes in the minority. (Sorry if this has been posted already) http://www.sny.tv/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070306&content_id=1423451&oid=36122&vkey=12
i'm not sure i agree with his pessimistic view about the running game, especially when we improve the right side of the OL. however, his assessment of Pennington and our QB situation is bull's eye. cheers
I'll take the under. Jones isn't sniffing 300 carries, injury or not. He is not going to be used the way Curtis was. Not only will Leon be getting a significant chunk of the carries, but you can bet a third back will be used as well. Yeah ... I don't think this guy has been paying attention over the last 12 months or so. I think the CS has made it pretty clear that the best players will play regardless of status. The workload will not be split up based on how much money Jones is making. The point of a committee is to keep fresh legs on the field, not to try and cheat the cap. This guy pretty much comes off as a grade-A attention whore, in my humble opinion.
Did a real Sports writer write that? That might be the most poorly written cliche filled garbage I've ever read. I don't have time to disect it right now put that was a lot of hot air about nothing.... I'm dizzy from reading that. Never heard of Salfino
These were the two points I was going to bring up which pretty much blows his entire theory out of the water. Besides these two points he tries to make, most of the rest of his article is just fluff.
This guy is an obvioous stat rat, that hasn't watched much football. He just throwing #'s up and trying to make an agrument for the sake of an argument IMO. To each his own. the proof, as they say, will be in the puddin'
Honestly, Jones was hyped at the time of the trade as an "all pro" and a game changer when he's neither. He's a good back, but the guy was ridiculously overrated here. Honestly, I'd much rather have had Turner than him. While our running game is upgraded, I don't think its anything special right now.
"The point of a committee, though, is to avoid paying any back real NFL money." this is just ridiculous. the whole thing made me mad to be even reading so i stopped. the part about chad is somewhat true but overly pessimistic. i'd rather appreciate the season we got out of him this past year and look forward to seeing if he is going to improve anymore this season, but thats just me.
So would I have. And are people saying here that paying 20 million to a part time back is the way we should have gone? Everybody wants him to share the load. We should have paid accordingly. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Turner is bigger, faster and would have been a lot cheaper.
Well...he probably wouldn't be "cheap" cause he'd cost us draft choices, but honestly I was one of those people who never believed the Chargers wanted a first and a third. I could see the problem with giving up picks though. Still, for the same price I'd take Turner over Jones anyday. You missed younger, more explosive, and a far bigger HR threat. Man, Turner would have been perfect for this franchise...
if jones is overrated what is Turner? Jones ran his team to the sb. turner took snaps when LT needed a drink or finish stat padding. now im not saying jones is a elite back. but i will take jones and 2 2nd rd picks anyday over turner and a 2nd rd pick. with no 1st or 3rd.
They will never get a 1st and a 3rd for Turner. They have as much as admitted it. I would have given our #6 in the second for Turner though. As long as he doesn't go to another AFC east team we can all sit here next November and say "Boy, we should have gotten him when we could have". I also find it funny that most people here don't want to give up any pick for a RB but find nothing wrong in spendinf the 3rd oveall pick on Peterson or a top 15 pick on Lynch. Why is that?
Jones ran his team to the Super Bowl? I'm sorry....what? He did damn good in the playoffs, but are you really handing him sole credit? And please get away from the backup cliches. Watch a few Chargers games, Turner was in there in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th...whatever they needed/wanted of him. All backups are there to give the starters a breather, thats how the two back system came to be.
I like the Jones deal as well. But he's not exactly a superstar. Lets face it he's almost a 30 year old RB who no matter how people want to define it, is a journeyman. he should help us, but he's not a game changer.
That journeyman was the best offensive talent the NFC Champs had all of last season. That journeyman also is one heck of a leader in the locker room and one heck of a pass blocker. We got ourselfs a pure football player that is not going to bitch or moan. I'd take Jones over any of the backs that have changed teams this offseason.
Aye... It's amazing how being on a winning team can help one's reputation, no? How many people would be preaching how great of a leader this guy was if this move was made last year and not this year? Jones is the definition of a journeyman. He just happened to find a situation that was perfect for him, he managed to stay healthy, and he produced. Hopefully he'll do the same for us, but he's not without risk and he's certainly nothing amazing.
yeah turner's the all pro right!? did turner run for 1200+ the last 2 years. oh and the only guys who have done that the past 2 years are: tomlinson, l.j., barber, parker, and rudi johnson
Jones is a solid pick up because he is an all around solid back who is a great pass blocker. He's not the long term solution at RB but for two to three years you have a pretty good idea what you're getting. I would rather have a solid veteran back who knows how to pass block so that the qb doesn't get killed. No one is saying that Jones is on the level with the elite backs in the league but he does all the things you want in a back. If we can improve the offensive line the running game should be much better.
