hah, i didnt know calculating draft pick points was simple math but ok. i simply thought you were calling my idea of drafting WR (specifically meachem) obscene. so you suggested trading all three picks for what most people on the board dont consider a need. miscommunication. in that case i dont like it, if WR is BPA at 25 (which is most likely will be) then im for it. that or Blalock if he falls. i think any pick at DT or LB round 25 there might be a reach. (ill consider anthony spencer).
No. I have been advocating drafting the fastest guy we could, because the lack of an outside threat is stifling the offense. Even ole noodle arm can 5 step drop and put it down the field, to a big fast w.o. In a three wide set, that opens up everything we want to do offensively by forcing the defense into a big nickel package, opening up the LoS, and the TE on a release down the seam.
P.S. Here's the chart. http://www.theredzone.org/2006/draft/draftvaluechart.asp and I'd throw Vilma in with that package to get up to 2 or 3 and get Calvin Johnson
Realistically (i.e., no Carriker or Brown) I think we will be choosing from the following players for #25: OL: Justin Blalock WR: Dwayne Bowe LB: Anthony Spencer CB: Leon Hall, Aaron Ross There will be other guys on the board with similar value, such as Meachem or Revis or Moss, but I'm guessing those players don't even manke Mangini's list at all. The guys listed above are all seniors with lots of production and leadership qualities. Leon Hall has the best chance to be gone by our pick, and IMO, Blalock and Bowe are the best two players on that board. Bowe had a dominant postseason other than his 40-time and should be an absolute STUD. I would be happy to take him at #25 because before his 40-time people were talking about him as a top-15 pick. If you don't think Bowe would be a good fit, please read about his Senior Bowl performance where the only person on the field that might have been better than him was Carriker. He would take over for Coles after the 2008 season, possibly the 2007 season. I just don't think there will be a DLineman worth the #25 pick. However, I am absolutely for drafting 1 or 2 DL with #59 and #63. The following players should be drafted around those slots (I definitely missed some): DL: Brandon Mebane, Justin Harrell, Ryan McBean, Anthony Johnson OLB: LaMarr Woodley, Victor Abiamiri, Brian Robison CB: Josh Wilson, MAYBE Eric Weddle is still around OL: Josh Beekman, Doug Free, James Marten I would be very happy with any of the following: 1 - Justin Blalock 2 - Justin Harrell 2 - LaMarr Woodley or 1 - Dwayne Bowe 2 - Josh Wilson 2 - Ryan McBean or 1 - Leon Hall 2 - Brandon Mebane 2 - Brian Robison
Meachem only averaged 18 ypc last year. Nothing significant about him other than his 40 time... Key phrase in scouting profile That is what our WR corps currently lacks.
Pull up all the Offseason contracts Offensive Linemen have gotten this year. MINDBOGGLING!!!! To me Offensive line is the Greatest VALUE going draft wise/ salary wise - and with those contracts they get you need to constantly replenish your OL stock. NEVER like Bradway sit back. I wouldn't mind the 1st three picks ALL go to offensive line. But, hey, I'm an OL nut, I feel there no reason in hell a team should be deficient at the OL, it's Step 1, 2, and 3 in building a winning team of any kind... You can't game plan and fake a bad OL much. What the hell is a team liek Miami doing - I would have spent Porter Money on OFFENSIVE LINE (Which wasn't even enough in this market!!!!!!!!) - And I'd draft another 3 if I were them. It's pitiful and heartbreaking in this league if you don't have OL and DL to RUN and STOP THE RUN.... Everything else is gravy If you have dominant lines I'll find you a FA RB, QB, WR's etc to get the job done.
Heres the deal...if someone like Meachem or Bowe fall to us in the first round its going to be hard to pass up. Just like the Patriots the Jets now have the mind set to draft the overall best player and not just someone to fill in a spot of need. If Bowe or Meachem are there dont be suprised to hear one of their names. Kiper is just trying to get the draft right in his mocks...you guys act like you know more then him for some reason when NO ONE knows shit
Im with those that are saying go for BPA at #25. That said, I think CB and DT are the biggest areas of need on this team. Any chance Leon Hall drops to 25? If not, Id go for a DT or Rush end. We need a real impact guy on D with this pick.
i was living in florida when he was at FSU....he didnt run any kind of "phantom times". he ran a 4.21 40 as a freshman. he HAD increadible speed when he was younger, and when his body wasnt so beaten up. he was a track team all american. dont hate on verney....
I love drafting linemen. Last years draft made me incredibly happy to see the team building what is the foundation to getting the job done. You can't score points and win games when your quarterback is on his back, and the running back gets dropped in the backfield, and any good runner will tell you if they've got a great line, they're going to get more yards. Look at Denver? I'm surprised Shanahan doesn't play RB there himself and pick up 300-400 yds a season.
I'm curious what the opinion of people here would be if the Jets traded a third rounder for five fifth round picks?
What is this obsession with drafting Calvin Johnson???? Don't we remember the last time we selected a receiver with the second pick, ie, Lam I'm scared shitless Jones! Thank God tangini is making the decisions around here, since they value substance over making a deadskin like splash.
The only thing Kiper is good for is a laugh. Anyone who takes him seriously doesn't know much about football.
1. Just say NO to drafting WR in 1st Round. Detroit will tell you much about their experience if you need. 2. I still believe first three picks have to go to the trenches. Now that DE spot is settled (Coleman) monster NT (which I don't think would be available at any of the three spots, sadly) and OGx2 would fit the bill for me. If Columbo falls (which I doubt - and I don't even think he is that great anyway) to Jet's laps, then OLB. 3. LB can be picked in Rd 3. *Or if OLB was picked with the other 2nd rd pick, either DT or LB* In short: if the Jets can come away with a true NT, 2 OL and an OLB to play on the opposite side of Bryan Thomas, I am a happy man on the draft day.
I have to disagree here. To me, the main reason for 8 in the box was the lack of respect for Chad's arm coming off injury. Coles and Cotchery are a very good duo. Wouldn't put them as elite but they can become very solid and one of the top tandems in the league if utilized properly. That being said, you are right the Coles is getting older but that's a reason to take a chance on a later round "project" WR not necessarily take one in the 1st round when you have much greater needs.
The Jets should go DE,DT,OT and Cb all the way in the draft. The defenses are not going to have any more respect for chads arm if he has a fast receiver or not. We had Santana Moss one of the fastest men in the league and they did not respect Chads arm. This team will win or loose a Championship on Defense and that is what Tangini should concentrate on. If we don't get a Dt and Some De or Lb to put pressure on the opposing teams Qb and stop the run it makes no difference who we have on offense.
kiper can be a pretty good source of info. re players coming out of college. especially those players selelcted in the later rounds . .
