I have been pretty happy with how Tanny & Co. have handled the team so far, but do they think they are too smart for their own good. Last year was last year and sitting back in FA was acceptable and pretty smart. They had to evaluate the entire team and the roster had endless question marks. No need to throw money into the wind. This year should be a bit different IMO. Like many of you I would like to see a bonafide starter come out of the FA ranks. Yes it will cost a bit and we will have to use the dreaded cap space but we should look to fill at least ONE spot for the sake of our upcoming draft. Depth Player, Role Player and Backups only take you so far and 10-6 is as far as it goes. I believe you build through the draft but this is a win now league where change happens constantly and the window closes quick. The team is built around Penny right now and he is in his prime (did I just write that?).
I hear what you're saying and I guess I'm getting a bit anxious too, Jets957349837478398749838747893723948372484299384924823429449348394872394734879359382308257849323802. The only thing that's keeping me positive at this point is, there's been a lot of articles that indicate the Jets are at least considering different people. I don't think it's a case of "asleep at the switch," I just think the right situation hasn't come up yet. It looks like we're bringing in some guys this week, so at least we've got that to hang onto, but yeah, I'm getting anxious too.
There's not much out there for what we're looking at. Honestly, at this point I think the only sensible way to address your interior line these days, financially speaking, is through the draft. Aubrayo Franklin was one of the few guys on the market and he went to play with Mike Nolan, his former DC. Kenyon Coleman will be a smart, under the radar pickup if we make it. Ditto on Colombo. At the linebacker position, New England made a horrible move and gave 20 million guaranteed to Adalius Thomas. With that in mind, what do people think Pittsburgh's Joey Porter(same age, one more Pro Bowl) is going to ask? The Jets are not going to build a winning team by investing in short term solutions that put you in a bind down the road. The Jets are playing it VERY smart. I applaud them. -X-
Mangini said it earlier this year. He will build the team through the draft. I don't see why all of you people are going nuts.
Some of you people need to be put on suicide watch over this F/A thing. Just because somebody else wants to blow $20M doesn't mean we need to bid $21M.
Um in what world is bringing in the best defensive player on the market that fits there D to perfection a bad move? And don't give me the money because the landscape in the NFL has changed, they gave him market value that will look cheap in two years.
A. Thomas is a good signing, but not at that price. He has 3 solid year left in him, and than he becomes a cap casualty. However, I do not know the details of his contract, and it may be front loaded. The Jets are playing it smart, but they should look to make a move so they do not have so many needs on draft day.
We are still rebuilding. The F/O realizes that we are more than signing one big player away from winning it all. That is why they are not spending the money. Once they build the team to what they feel is a Championship contender then they will spend that money on a player that makes a diff. They are concentrating on signing our own good players. Mangini comes from the Beli-Parcells tree and he will build through the draft and get that big gun when it will make a diff. That is why the Pats signed Thomas. They are ready to win it all again with one or two impact players. We have to many holes to fill this year.
That is it in a nutshell. Do we get exactly what we are after or accept a substitute. When the right player for thr right price come along then see us move.
I think the Jets should counter the Pats signing with some more beef upfront on the Oline. We play NE twice a year and everytime it is a very important game for both teams. Having Thomas coming off the edge all game and roughing up "the Chad" will be taxing. We need to create a nice impermeable wall around Chad and nip that signing in the bud. Also, a nice pass rusher for ourselves would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance Santa.
The true contract terms for A Thomas are undisclosed. You nor anyone else besides the patsies and Thomas know the actual terms. 24 million over the first two years which is NOT guaranteed. The guaranteed numbers of that money is undisclosed. As for the 20 million guaranteed comment, thats is 100 percent false. The globe has him getting closer to 16 guaranteed. There is no way they would have 14.5 million left on there cap ( which they do) if Thomas made 10 million this year. He is against the cap for 7.5, not 10. This is a good singing for them, the delusions continue.
The salery cap is expanding. Tossing A Thomas behind Wilfork , Warren and Seymour is a huge addition. The contract is front loaded and the 20 million guaranteed crap is speculation started on this website. It aint no 20 million people, globe has it between 15 - 20 and closer to the 15 side of that Since the contract is UNDISCLOSED, no one besides A Thomas and the patsies know the totals. I was in Boston at my brothers listning to sports radio eei to get some details for us. Micheal Holly ( guy who wrote the most recent book on the patriots) stated the Patriots had "a lot of money left". Around 15 million. Which I looked up, and it is true. it is actually 14.5. We should have went after this guy.
I really think we need some more help along the OL and DL before we can consider ourselves true 'contenders.' While this does not mean we should not try to win every game and make the playoffs, this doesn't mean that we should sell off our future at an attempt to win everything this year. I don't want a 'superbowl and done' team; I want a consistent contender like the Eagles, Pats, or Colts. Resign Rhodes now, while we have the money and while we can still get a little 'discount' because we are coming to him 2 years early. If Mangini feel that Vilma and DRob are not in our future, this is the year to trade them while we can absorb the cap hit and can still get good value for them. Pickup some true 3-4 pieces in the draft (LB and DL). Continue to build through the draft, with OL and DL as the focus in the first few rounds. Strike in FA when the time and money is right, don't just try and counter moves made by your competition.
Thomas is scheduled to make 24 million ( which is not guaranteed) over the first two years. The 20 million figures are not true. Since the contract details are undisclosed anyone who says he is making that much much be his agent and post on here for fun. If he was getting 10 million this season the pats would not have 14.5 million left on there cap after all these moves.
From what I read he only met with the Patriots and signed almost on the spot. I don't think we had a chance. And yes, while it was definitely a good signing, 7.5 mil a year over 5 years is still a lot of coin for a 30+ year old LB. I have also read the SB is 18 mil, and I will look for a link on that.
Valid points here. Although I am a jets fan, I am looking at this from a unbiased perspective. They have around 14 million left on there cap. Before they franchised Asanti they started with 28.5 million. They franchised Asanti the number was 21.5 million. Now it is 14.5. I think the guaranteed was around 16 - 18... 18 being on the high side of things. Judging from the media reports out here anyway. For the pats and there 28.5 mill, this was a great pickup. You need to remeber lb was there weakness and they had to get better now. They can draft a lb with one of there two first rounders to groom behind Thomas. They brought in the best player they could for the next 3 years, and I bet they draft a Patricl Willis type or that de from Miami to groom behind Thmoas for the future. No metter the circumstance the pats are going to have 3 million extra against the cap when Teddy retires next year.
