I do think this is about money, as I said. McCareins could probably remain on the team if he takes a 60% cut or whatever, but my guess is, he's probably unwilling to do that. Maybe his buddy Humperdinglemeister can find him a spot. We need to pick up a younger WR in the later rounds anyway, someone with more separation speed.
We probably are going to draft a WR on the first day of the draft. McCariens is a nice player if you own him for short money and he understands he's role. Unfortunately he is over priced and doesn't understand or like the fact that he's a backup.
We can't afford a wide receiver on the first day of the draft because we also need a right o tackle, starting defensive tackle, depth at guard, a fullback, a running back and help at defensive end. Wide receiver is a luxury position right now on this team...
This draft is loaded at WR, the value is to good and the need is there. The Jets have so few elite players that unless we are going to move up and take a huge game changing stud or QB we have to fill the draft with BAP. WR is going to be that at some point between our first and fourth pick.
It's a shame J-Mac wasn't used as much until later in the season. He had the potential to be a solid 3rd WR, but I'm guessing he just didn't fit correctly in the playbook. I'd like to maybe trade him for someone, but if not, I hope we use the $ we are 'saving' to sign someone with similar qualities like J-Mac. Of course someone better, but you know what I mean.
Brad Smith has been a receiver all of one year, he's a hard worker -- and I think his improvement will be drastic...he needs a chance to be our #3 this year.
I expect Smith to make alot of strides this offseason within his WR skills. He just has the personality and swagger that suggests he will be a very good WR very soon. Now whether that translates into him beiong a quality # 3 starter by the beginning of next season, who knows...but lets look at our WR depth if we dod release McCareins and his high cap number... 1. Coles 2. Cotchery 3. Smith 4. Dwight 5. Wallace Wright(has some recieveing skills and was very good on special teams) Doesn't look like an awful corps does it? Additionally there are some great WR's available in this draft who would indeed add another element to our offense. there's no telling who may fall to us at #25 or even in the 2nd round.
McCareins made a nice catch vs. Miami, and my favorite play of 2006. Pennington play action deep pass TD vs. the Lions. He will be missed by me. He wasn't great at all, but I liked his attitude in the middle of the year, playing on special teams etc.
Very good post and I agree completely. The idea of passing on a big ugly on either line w/ our first or second pick is painful, but there is such good value at WR this year, it would make alot of sense.
It doesn't look awful just because of the top two but it sure doesn't look good after that. I agree with you about Smith, I do believe he will end up being a good WR but to count on him to be the #3 is dangerous. Dwight is worthless as a WR and I don't know anything about Wright as a WR, he did real well on STs but hasn't done anything at WR. I also agree about the Wrs in the draft & if we got one of them I would have no problem releasing JMac after, it just seems pointless to release him now before we have a viable alternative on the roster.. It is not like we need the cap room, we are just creating another hole that needs to be filled now.
Good... Is Stokely stll available? As much as I like Brad, Stokely would be an excellent addition. If not, we WILL be drafting a WR on day one.
my money's on chansi stuckey. great, quick player...hard worker...i think he's going to be exactly what we're looking for come the 3rd.
