With the start of free agency beginning March 2nd, there are six guys I would love for the JETS to sign if I was their GM. The first player that I would sign without a doubt is CB Nate Clements. He will look for a big payday and the JETS can surely give it to him as he solidies our secondary need. The second guy is OT Leonard Davis. Davis is a mountain of a man at 6'6 360 who was out of position playing LT in Arizona and can do wonders for the JETS on the right side of the OL and will definitely help in the running game. Speaking of the running game, I know the JETS need a big time playmaking RB but how about they first get a solid productive FB in Ovie Mughelli. Askew didn't work out for the JETS but big physical mauling FB Ovie Mughelli will. Staying on the offensive side of the ball, the JETS can open up their passing attack by adding another TE in Daniel Graham from the Patriots. He's a guy that excels in both the passing game and running game as a good blocker and can team with Chris Baker to give the JETS a good TE tandem. Finally, I have to get back to the defensive side of the ball where the JETS need to address the D-Line. Two players that have played in the 3-4 and can come at a nice bargain for the JETS are 6'4 328 DT/NT Robaire Smith and 6'0 300 DT/DE Anthony Adams. Both of these guys give the JETS veterans who can play the 3-4 system and both are under 30 years old. Free agency is set to start, and I can wait for the JETS to start signing some players that can come in and help us reach the Super Bowl.
If I am remembering correctly the Texans brough Robaire Smith in from TEN where he played well in a 4-3. They tried him at NT in the 3-4 and he seemed to struggle. (Len P. in today's ESPN article says he is suited to be an interior lineman in the 4-3.)
Haha... This would be a wet dream gone right, but we would have a negative cap space after all of those signings. That, and we are looking for youth, not age.. Wont happen...
This is when players are the most expensive. You end up giving them multi-year contracts and they end up being great for the first few years and then duds for the next few. This drives your team into salary cap hell and isn't a way to have a consistenly winning team. While I agree that we should sign Thomas/Porter I can't see us spending much on the other positions especially since our only open spot is RT.
If the Redskins can sign big name players in the off-season with a low cap, why the hell can't the JETS with over $29 million to spend. With all the players I listed only two will be demanding a high contract, and the other four guys are easily affordable.
Look at where the Redskins have gotten with signing all their big name players. I know people don't like to say it but we are following the Pats method of not signing big names and building off the draft. We may make a splash here and there but we won't be one of the main teams in FA.
The JETS are no Redskins! They need to sign Clements and Leonard Davis to solidify themselves at CB and RT with veterans and that only two big name players. Mughelli, Graham, Smith, and Adams are middle of the road players that add depth to the JETS roster and make them more competitive to get out of the Patriots shadow and truly be in contention for a Super Bowl ring.
Daniel Graham is looking at a $12mm signing bonus in a deal that averages $5mm per over...that's a big-time signing. Viking/Saints/Broncos/Seahawks are in the mix according to Scout.com Davis is an underachiever and Smith doesn't fit in the 3-4. I like Mughelli and am not to familiar with Adams. As for Clements, dude wants to be THE highest paid CB...not a signing I see the Jets making although, obviously, he would be a HUGE upgrade
I'm very interested to see what the Jets do in free agency. My gut tells me not much at this point with the few true A list players likely to draw ridiculously over-priced deals. Denver was one of the two franchises that had a spot for Vilma, along with Washington, and they've already shot their wad in terms of tradeable backs and offensive linemen. Bell, Foster and a 2nd could easily have wound up in the Jets hands for Vilma. Then Denver lost a CB on New Year's eve and that whole story changed. I'm guessing we're all going to be very bored this time next month when the first wave of free agency is over and the Jets have signed one second tier free agent. They'll sign more in June but I think they're going to be mouse quiet in March.
Yeah it wouldn't have left me glowing either. The Jets need to get a pro bowl caliber right tackle in his prime, a franchise runningback in his early prime or a top 10 draft pick for me to feel like they got value out of a Vilma deal. I'm guessing that's about the level that the Jet's FO is thinking about too.
I like the Mughielli signing alright. Anthony Adams wouldn't be bad either, though you have to wonder why San Fran would let him go if he were at all suited to the 3-4. I'd actually prefer Tony PAshos over Leaonard Davis, but I fear Pashos is not versatile enough for the Jets. If Iw ere GM I'd look to improve our depth and try to aim for a few front-line players in the draft rather than free agency. In that vein, I like Niko Koutivides for his toughness and versatility. Anthony Herrera is another backup type player that Iw ould love to have. As for starters and surprise players, I think Bobby McCray could fill our pass-rushing OLB spot quite well, though I don't think he's versatile enough to be a Mangini target. I might even go so far as to try to find a starting guard in free agency where I like Sean Locklear. I think he fits our scheme with his good feet and athletic ability, though he is not a power player by any stretch of the imagination. And if I were to target any particular player in free agency, it would probably be Justin Griffith. He can block and catch and won't break the bank. Of course, I stll hope we get Michael Turner, but that's another thing altogether.
If you had your way the jets would be the reskins. Are FO is alot smarter they wont break the bank on overpriced FA's. Expect to be dissapointed
It's a good thing you aren't the Jets GM because there is this little thing called the salary cap, that would make all but a few of those moves cost prohibitive....
If i were the jets i would hold off on Nate Clements. I would make my move for Porter or Adalius Thomas to about a 3 year deal to give the defense some much needed pressure. I prefer Porter because he's exciting. Porter is one of those guys that motivates his teammates and intimidates offenses. Then i would draft a CB with our first pick in the draft. Second pick i might take either a defensive end or offensive tackle, depending solely on which position has the most talented player left...or Sidney Rice is he is somehow still there. With the second pick in the second round i would select Brian Leonard to fill the gap in at FB. Even with those moves the jets will still be under the cap knowing that Kerry Rhodes is due a new deal. As for the runningback situation i think that we might be sticking with Leon Washington and Cedric Houston, although using the 3rd or 4th round selection to draft that Henry guy out of Arizona could be a nice gamble. He was a beast at the combine and might be worth taking a shot. Depending on if he proves his health or not Michael Bush could also be there at the end of the second round or third.
Oh yes, and of course a NT is a major priority that most fans would like to see adressed this offseason. I feel that we should give Robertson one more year to develope and get used to this new scheme. If he is a failure remember that big ass Sione Pouha (Probably spelt wrong) we drafted last year could get playing time.
