Why not try to get 6th or 7th instead of cutting?

    Wishful thinking.

It's the same cap hit. You're going to get rid of a player anyway.
Use those picks to get players you would go after as an undrafted free agent.
You then wouldn't have to worry about competeing against other teams for them.
Let them work out a new deal with the new team and we have a late rounder that might help some day.
There are a few that will be cut this year, i'm sure, the Jets can get a late rounder for.

Because I think teams anticipate you cutting players so they arnt gonna trade if they know you are gonna release the player. It just doesnt work out the same way in real life as it does in Madden.

A team give up a 6 or 7 then they don't have to worry about another team moving in on that player.

And they would have to assume that salary, instead of giving less.

A player would never rework a contract to give them less money. Doesn't make sense. You would only rework a deal that would be benefitual to the team and the player. If the player is worth a 6th-7th round pick than the team with the pick could just draft a player in that position for cheap.

Its not as easy as it seems. Teams are often reluctant to give up draft picks for guys that will likely hit the market anyway.

actually b/c of (almost) everyone having plenty of cap room (this excludes players due a large roster bonus) teams are now able to hold onto players longer or even threaten just to hold onto for the sake of holding onto...b/c they dont have to clear room to get under the cap....there should be lots of trades b/c of this
an example is Steve mcnair...b4 the new cap deal he would have been cut...after he got a 4th round pick
of course with our guys we could get nothing but 6ths/7ths
the value would be coming from coaches/gms wanting these guys on the teams as soon as possible...not just b4 the regular season or the final preseason game

similar to the way we traded bollinger...
i'd see us playing barlow/houston alot during the preseason until we could find someone who might actually want them

this is not Madden you cant just trade worthless players for 7th round picks. It just doesn't work that way.

this is a clear case of madden mentality

teams wont just give up a 6th or 7th just because you want to get rid of the person

espn- "Trades becoming the trend? If teams are less active in free agency, they might be more active in the trade market. We saw that last year. Trades escalated slightly, and a rule change helped matters. After June 1, teams that trade players have to account for only the existing signing bonus proration in the cap. Excess proration would count the next season. Teams close to the salary cap have an easier ability to make a trade. But with teams having so much cap room, teams will be more willing to take all the cap hits now. The Saints did a great job with that last year. They made numerous trades. Even though they have $9 million of dead money in 2007, they have $21 million of cap room. Usually third-year players heading toward the end of their rookie contracts are the most likely to be traded if they aren't starting for the team that drafted them. Financially, a lot of the traded players are considered bargains, and if they have multiple years left on their contracts, they are truly bargains."
-this is a quote from an article still on the front page on the site
between the rule change and salary cap increase crappy players got a raise in value...obviously this doesnt apply everywhere
basically it means that we may be able to move barlow and if necessary maybe even houston...i dont see this applying to barrett or barton

Actually, this applies more to a guy with a sgning bonus? Why, the team trading the player takes on the bonus, and the team getting the player receives the player sans bonus. It means they can cut him whenever (unless of course, another bonus is triggered in his contract) with no cap hit.

With that said, noone is trading for Barlow. He was injured last yr, and I'd give him another shot, but everyone on here said they think he sucks, right? Well guess what.. I'm sure the other 31 teams saw the tape. As for Houston.. unlikely as well..

Barton? A team would suck him up. IN a heartbeat. Barrett, with his contract maybe not..b ut maybe since it would include no bonus...

I think it's naive to think that management did not try to trade someone before the release and got no takers.
