    Tailgating Forbidden For Super Bowl
    Poll
Should the NFL allow tailgating for the Super Bowl?

(CBS4) MIAMI Die-hard football fans attending the Super Bowl game at Dolphin Stadium are getting a rude awakening after finding out that no tailgating of any type will be allowed on game day within one mile of the stadium.

"There is no tailgating allowed in the Dolphin Stadium parking lots," Sue Jaquez, a member of the Super Bowl XLI Host Committee, confirmed on Tuesday. "And there is no tailgating anywhere within a one-mile radius of the stadium." "And there are no RVs allowed."

Tailgating is permitted during regular- and post-season games for Dolphins fans, a team official on Tuesday said it would indeed be allowed at the Super Bowl. According to Jaquez, however, the official has been seriously misinformed.

The Dolphins do not organize and oversee the Super Bowl, Jaquez pointed out. Instead, those duties are left up to NFL officials. And because of security reasons, no pre-game partying on (or very near) the premises will take place. Fans spotted tailgating could face charges, Jaquez said.

"This is part of the NFL, not the Dolphins," Jaquez said. "If the Dolphins are saying there's tailgating -- or think it's going to be allowed -- then they need to contact the NFL."

Detective Nelda Fonticella of the Miami-Dade Police confirmed the Super Bowl rules.

If caught grilling or consuming alcohol within that one-mile radius of Dolphins Stadium, fans initially "will be warned and asked to pick up their things and leave," Fonticella said. "We're trying to make this a pleasant experience for everyone, and there will be plenty to do in the week leading up to the game."

Not having tailgating in the parking lots is one thing, but I find the one mile rule more interesting. Are there no private homes within 1 mile of the stadium? Maybe not (I have no idea what the area is like), but if there are, are they going to go into people's backyards and confiscate their grills and kegs?

Now people will be drunk driving to the game instead of just after it.

Maybe this is just a dumb ploy to sell more beer.

Sounds to me like it more of an issue of security. The super bowl being one of the biggest sporting events if not THE biggest in the United States, it could be a target for some radical group.

I think it is because the NFL doesn't want any incidents at its premier event. Even though I am sure it is just relegated to public property, I really don't see how it can be enforced within a mile radius. It also precludes people from just showing up to tailgate outside the super bowl.

This is a sad day. The league no longer seems to care about the true fans, who the league would be nothing without.

While I don't agree with the decision, there really aren't many "true fans" that get the opportunity to go to the Super Bowl anymore.

Are they afraid that the terrorists are gonna throw a keg party?

I don't think you're wrong. I just don't think it makes logical sense for it to be a security issue. If two drunk assholes get in a fight, that's totally manageable and happens all the time. If that's what they are trying to prevent then that's going to far. If they are trying to prevent a terrorist attack, shutting down tailgates won't do anything.

I assume you're referring to the cost, and I agree. The true fans who are able to get tickets are already getting screwed on the price, now the league is not only #!#$!#% them, they aren't using any type of lube. I can't blame the league for wanting to make as much money as possible (who doesn't), but to take away from the experience of the average fan who is probably making a decent sacrifice to buy those tickets in order to make the atmosphere more attractive to rich people is disgusting. This calls for a boston tea party type event.

Cost, somewhat, but more about the fact that ticket availability to the general public and team fans is very limited. The Super Bowl is filled with corporate sponors, team affiliates, etc.

Unfortunately, I don't really see any of this changing as it does all come down to $$$.

Somewhere in the Middle East a man of terrorist origin is sitting there going "Another victory. The infidels will surely feel our wrath now as they have to walk an entire mile after their tailgate to get to the game. This could add FIFTEEN MINUTES to their pre-game post-tailgate travel. Muwahahahahahah." (sic).

I can understand no drinking, though I wouldn't agree with it, but no grilling???? People aren't allowed to eat?

There are houses less than a half mile from the stadium. Will they arrest or fine those people?

I'm not saying that is the reason, I was just offering up a possible "why". :)
