I’m certainly no expert but IMO while both Bailey and Reese are both tremendous talents, it’s a question of fit for us. Bailey is one 100% edge rusher and that is all he has done in his college career. With tremendous numbers to prove it. He has excelled at it. So if you want the best pure edge rusher that has perfection that position and you play primarily a front 4 he is your guy. Reese is a hybrid beast of a LB that you can move all over the field and has just barely scratched the surface as on the ball edge. He was moved to that position last year. Is awesome against the run, he is great in space and you can move him and rush him eventually from any 3-4 and 4-3 position and keep him on the field on all downs. It’s that versatile style and nearly untapped potential that will be the discriminator for the selection. Either would be a great addition, but it will be dependent on what type of D AG wants to run. I lean toward the off the ball backer roll and disguise coverage all over the field with Glenn. I think the point about AG not having that good of a D is way too harsh, he went thru a year in Detroit where half his starters and top guys were out, and he had a bunch of third stringers holding the fort well enough to remain competitive and damned near pull a miracle. My two cents.
I don't believe Bain is the "safe" pick by any stretch. IMO he's the least safe selection of the 3 (Reese, Bailey, Bain). I'm rooting for Bain cause he's a pretty badass dude but its a simple fact that NO edge rusher with his length has ever been successful. How in the world that's considered "safe" is a head scratcher to me I have no idea how good Bain will be. I think Bailey will be a solid pass rushing specialist in this league, something like 8-10 sacks per year with deficiencies in the run game. We already have that very same type of player here in Will McDonald. Which is why my selection would be Arvell Reese
I personally find WR and Edge by far the most difficult positions to evaluate of all upcoming prospects, so I will trust others to evaluate. Yet, IF the film tells an evaluator that Bain is the best guy, It's hard for me to imagine knocking him down because his arms are 5/8" shorter than Micah Parson's arms. My middle finger is 5/8" longer than my ring finger. Do you think Parsons would stop being an elite pass rusher if he lost the tip of his middle finger? Maybe he would--I don't know--I just find it hard to imagine.
Parsons could also do literally everything that's asked of any player that plays defense. He's one of a kind (hopefully two after Reese). You take the risk on a total freak like Parsons because his floor is still pretty damn good. Kind of like Reese.
I'm not advocating for any one of them over the others. I'm just asking if you think Parsons suddenly WOULDN'T be able to "do literally everything that's asked of any player that plays defense" if he woke up tomorrow and his arms were 5/8 of an inch shorter than they are today. *by YOU, I mean anybody reading this, not any particular poster.
I think Parsons would struggle more with setting the edge and getting off blocks if his arms were a half inch shorter yes. Idk about "literally everything", I think he'd probably still be good at almost everything But you shouldn't be comparing Bain to Parsons because that's not the choice. The choice is Bain to Bailey and Reese. And Bain's arms are nearly 2 inches shorter than Reese and nearly 3 inches shorter than Bailey's
I'm only comparing Bain to Parsons because their arm lengths are nearly the same, and the knock on Bain is arm length. I have no qualms with the Jets drafting whichever of the 3 they thing is the best fit as they see it. I have no favorite amongst the three candidates and will be thrilled with any of them.
This arm length "discussion" is such bullshit that it doesn't warrant consideration. What I want to know is how in the hell does a guy like Reese disappear in games when his whole team is loaded? Shouldn't he have like 20 or 30 sacks a year, based on the supposed "potential?" Also, how OFTEN is a defender asked to run down a RB, from behind, like some have pointed out? It's not a lot, not in the pro game. Personally, if he's "running down" RB's then the rest of the defense shit the bed. I've said this before and I'll say it again. FUCK POTENTIAL! KC, San Fran, Los Angeles (both teams) can draft on POTENTIAL. When you haven't sniffed the fucking playoffs in FIFTEEN years you bring guys in that you KNOW are going to take a position, sit there for the next decade and demolish people. END o' STORY! DAMN...haven't you people learned? "Ooo Ooo Ooo, Reese has TONS of potential!" "His Floor is this and his ceiling is that!" Really? If he was such a bad ass, we wouldn't be having this discussion. How so? I don't view arm length as a question mark. I'd like to know what ? sits with Bain, outside arm length? Seriously, I'd like to know. Can't find it, but someone made the comment about, "no one, with Bain's arm length, has amounted to anything in the NFL." Yeah, maybe, until it does. Until a player comes in and actually does it. If we were talking about a guy that lit it up for 5 whole games, his entire college career, then I'd be onboard. This is not Bain. I feel it coming. I really do. Someone, not the NY Jets, is going to draft Bain and that guy will end up a HoF'er and we'll all be flapping our gums, those still alive of course, about how his arms were too short, by a whopping inch or two, and THAT was the full impetus on why he wasn't draftable. To be frank, personally, I think it's a toss up as to who WILL BE a solid pro, Downs or Bain.
I'm having a little difficulty proving this wrong, maybe someone else can: Total number of defensive players drafted in the top 10 of the NFL draft in the past 40 seasons with only 1 season accrued as starter in college and who ended up making at least one NFL All Pro team: 1. Von Miller (NCAA stats, final year 10.5 sacks 17.5 TFL, college career 33 sacks 50.5 TFL)
I’m not disagreeing but you’re under the assumption they are drafting for versatility. I’m under the assumption they are drafting not to get fired and then limping through to 2027.
LOL!! I was taking “creative licensing.” But, you know what I mean. Guys like that don’t “flash” in college, they dominate. Especially if they’re on a team loaded with stars… Again, just my opinion but the arguments I’m hearing simply don’t hold water. He’s either an absolute beast or he’s a hit or miss candidate and that’s something the Jets simply can’t have right now. This team needs as many “sure things” as possible. At least, as sure as you can be. Nothing is 100% certain but if you line up 100 analysts and draftnik’s in a row and asked them which player, of the three, would be the safest pick to start day one and not leave the field for the next decade, I’d be willing to bet the majority would have Bain at number one followed closely by Bailey.
So I had some time to kill yesterday and I went back and rewatched Indiana vs Ohio State, I focused on Buckeyes defense and was focused on 3 players. Guess what linebacker was all over the LOS making tackles for buckeyes and was a presence all game? Sonny Stiles….Like I said I know it’s only one game but they went up against one of the best offensive lines in college football, Arvel Reese was nowhere to be found in that game. They mentioned his name a couple times but it was Stiles and Downs who’s names were being mentioned a lot throughout the game. So after the game I decided to look at box score, Stiles and Downs were leaders in box score with 7 tackles each, Reese had none. I only did it because of what you wrote, how does a guy disappear in big games and how he should have a lot more sacks because of the talent he has surrounding him. lol, I don’t know about 30 sacks but I understood your point. Also remember I don’t know what defensive packages were used and what his assignments were for those packages, but it was telling that Sonny Stiles and Caleb Downs were constantly in on the play and the box score reflected that.
