I actually like Simpson enough to consider him a 1st round pick, it's just that lack of starts, older age with that lack of starts, lack of size, and multiple injuries he sustained with that lack of starts and size scare me. Depends on what you mean by completely sold. Say we draft him at 16, I guess that makes us sold on him. He sits behind Geno, maybe plays a little bit, shows some flashes maybe. He is a rookie with 15 College starts. I would say it would not make me unsold if I were sold before. So, then you punt on 2027 and continue to give Simpson opportunities and evaluate. Which is what I think will happen if we draft Simpson unless we are so bad, we actually get #2/3 pick. And who knows, this may turn out to be a good decision. That's the thing, we are in a VERY tough spot now, who knows what the best decision is, not really obvious. If we had lost one more game then it would have been
My preference would be a WR or a stud CB/Safety at 16 and Simpson at 33 right now. As you know I’m a proponent to trade down a bit, not much and garnish more premium picks, but that will be tough. Unfortunately, I don’t think he gets past the Rams, so if Mouge is really sold on Simpson he might pull the plug at 16.
The one thing I think we can all agree on is Simpson does not make it out of the first round. Again, I really don’t know that much about him but, when reading the tea leaves, it would seem someone is going to pull the rip cord on that guy in the first. I don’t particularly care where we draft a kid, no matter the position, as long as that kid stays on the team for the next decade and is useful! Right now, I have a pretty low bar…
I would not take Simpson on day 1, period. He is getting hype because this QB class is weak. The jets need to address WR at 16 since it looks like they won't at 2.
That was my take if the Jets are on the fence about Simpson. If the brass feels Simpson has a decent chance to be a future FQB then you take him at 16 and don't look back. You can get a damned good WR two at 33. You can trade for one. Next year is an unknown.
I guess your confidence in AG is more than mine. Which I know isn’t true and we both agree he’s a terrible coach. I think we pick in the top 5. Mateer is the guy I want based on the last 3 years. I like Manning to a lot but I doubt anyone with 1 will give him up ala Mendoza this year. Simpson would be the hedge bet for us. He will be coming from the past coaching staff and will have to earn a starting role. Against one of MMM. It’s a great problem to have.
Love the passion Mezz! I think we might be getting ahead of ourselves because I think AG gets fired and the new coaching staff whoever that is will get those 3 picks next year get dangled in front of them to take the job from that sap Woody Johnson.
I can help but wonder what a year from now will bring, how many of these so called cream of the crop QBs fall down the ranks and which others climb up rapidly up the rankings. When is all well and done, curious to see how many reach first round status and what the separation amongst them will be.
I honestly don’t think that will happen. He will turn this team around enough to get another year. Is more a case of people wishing for him to get fired as opposed to what the outcome might turn out to be. My gut tells me he is a fast learner and does not make the same mistake twice. He is not afraid to change things, learn from his mistakes, get help and players truly respect him. Now, make no mistake, having Woody select the next HC is not something that equates success.,
Idk is anyone saw Lance Zielein (NFL network)’s mock draft but IMO it’s absolute perfection I would kill to have it play out this way he has the Jets getting Reese AND Downs. Talk about momentous change to the defense https://www.nfl.com/news/lance-zier...boys-hit-the-jackpot-at-no-12-plus-two-trades
Actually having two players vying for a hard to fill position doubles the odds of adequately filling that position. If you don't understand that math just tell us why it was necessary to get rid of Darnold when Wilson was drafted.
I think he deleted his staff because if he didn’t he was done too. I’m not convinced on AG. His D wasn’t very good in Detroit either. It was a bend but don’t break defence. The true reason they had success was Ben Johnson and that’s pretty clear after what he’s done in Chicago and how the lions were back to mediocrity. Glenn might win 3-4 games tops
Dream scenario really. Downs at 16 seems like too much of a stretch though. I don’t think he falls that far unless teams are truly concerned with his medical
Again, your math there only works when you don't specify the surrounding variables. Variables that are typically going to result in bad football teams having to make "is this the guy?" determinations within smaller windows of offered opportunity. If you are constantly spending a meaningful pick on on QB nobody is realistically getting the extended look Darnold got here before we committed elsewhere on Zach. We probably just impatiently spit out more "right guy in the wrong situation to succeed" cases of Sam Darnold. This concept idea we are going to draft a QB and that kid is going to just magically play at a high level in shorter order, and turn everything around for us on his own, is rooted more in wishful thinking then reality. Young QBs being drafted on to terrible football teams like the Jets are going to realistically need more developmental evaluation rope then that. Best outcome odds here imo see us taking Simpson in the 1st and him only getting a fairly small sample of 2026 starts in what is still currently projecting to be a bottom tier offense. Where you won't reasonably be heading in to 2027 "knowing" much more on whether the talent is going to pan out then you do now.
I mean let's all pray, but I can't see any way this happens. He's got some other wonky stuff on there... Styles slipping all the way to the Cowboys? I actually would not be shocked at all if Bain slips to 9, but I also don't think it's likely.
Really? I think we may potentially see Bain tumble out of the first round. Internet pundits love production. Fans love production. But I think at the end of the day scouts are required to draft for projection to the NFL, not past collegiate service. I like Bain. I think he’ll be a solid NFL player at a minimum. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t this years guy that falls since there’s always a couple.
I don't disagree. I think Bain's stock rightfully took a hit at the combine. I just think that there would be a team that would get antsy and trade up if he starts falling into the teens.
