Would not have been a terrible move to get him for sure. I wonder if Mooge has something else up his sleeve or after giving up a pick on Geno just doesn't want to spend another one. Agreed on Tyrod not being a great option - too fragile.
Probably because Tanner McKee sucks. He played one good half of football against the 3-14 Giants and Jets fans were ready to give up the farm for him.
Just saw somewhere (think it may have been Cimini) that the Jets did have calls asking about trading for McKee and Mills and I think a couple of other guys, but the asking price was a 2nd rounder and Mougey passed. I think that’s the right call from Mougey but wouldn’t mind circling back…I’d be fine trading a 3rd and a later pick for Mills…McKee I’m not as sold on but was at least happy to hear that Mougey made the call
The idea of trading assets for a QB made a lot more sense before we went out and got a locked in 2026 starter. I mean at the end of the day we are talking about the backup QB for a team that likely isn't sniffing a playoff hunt. It is also a pretty good bet absolutely nobody a year from now is going to be sitting around suggesting we don't draft a shiny new QB prospect because we still have McKee or Mills waiting in the wings for an extended opportunity. Which would basically be the equivalent of throwing away yet another 3rd round pick in 2027 (as we don't have one this year to throw away). Looking at the list of leftover free agent QBs I'm almost tempted the guess the Jets might be content waiting till after the draft to pen in who the 2026 backup QB is. The ones who might actually sign here are probably pretty good bets to still be there.
You must have missed them first time around, well, certainly on this board, myself included, would have taken him, before we signed Smith anyway.
Well, I was one of the people guessing on it early, but I don't remember hearing any rumors that the Jets were showing interest until now. https://forums.theganggreen.com/thr...uin-draft-position.101144/page-3#post-4472399 https://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/2025-nfl-week-12-around-the-league.101124/#post-4470633
Honestly, for what it could cost to get Mills I’d rather sign Geno for a year and look towards 2027. Mills is fine, we’re not a playoff team with him, I don’t think he’s any more of a locker room guy than Geno and it would cost us most likely an early day 3 pick.
I just meant us speculating tbh, I think I would have preferred him over Smith, but I'm happy enough if we get the Smith from the Seahawks.
I would have preferred Mills to Smith even at the cost of a 3rd round pick, which I don’t think we have so we’d have to maneuver a bit, but I like Mills as a young guy with at least some upside who has played decently well when given the chance. But hearing that the asking price was a 2nd rounder, I’m fine with passing on that…Geno can hold the fort until next draft…and while I’d prefer Mills at the cost of a 3rd, I think I’m fine with Geno if that cost is really a 2nd…we need all four of our first picks to rebuild this fucking mess. Maybe the price comes down a bit later, or even on draft day, who knows…but I do like that Mougey isn’t jumping the gun
But you’re giving up something for a guy who is a UFA next year and also 29… not old but certainly not young. Then you’re forced to either pay him based off one good year or let him walk and you gave up an asset for nothing. I just see that as a lose lose situation. Not that it wouldn’t work but you won’t know if it did til 2028
Honest question. Did you watch Mills against the Bills? Not did you read his box score, did you actually watch the game? I know the box score read fine with two touchdowns but he started the game like 0/11 and missed a million open receivers. The Texans should’ve won that game (at home mind you) by two touchdowns and had to squeak out a win. It’s anecdotal and the guys a legit NFL backup but he’s overrated like craaazy here.
Yeah I’ve watched him play various games as he used to be a starter before they drafted Stroud…not saying he’s a world beater, but I do think he’d be the best QB we’ve had since the FitzMagic year probably…I get Geno did not cost draft picks so that’s good…who knows if we get Seattle or Vegas Geno, but either way it’s a one year stop gap…so I don’t have a huge problem with it…there were no great options…we got a decent one out of a bunch of crappy choices.
Mills was bad that day one thing I like about him though is his command and composure. I think he’s the perfect NFL backup because he’s big&strong, confident, smart but not good enough to create a QB controversy. And regardless of what this team does in the short term, it does need a long term backup
I agree. There needs to be an overall strategy to get a FQB on the roster. I believe that the QB strategy starting last year where the QB draft was shallow was to throw a dart at a young FA player with potential and if that does not work, draft one. The young FA dart throw has failed, and now we need to get one in the draft. However, it is a 1 QB draft as most QBs expected in 2026 essentially moved to 2027, and we have #2 pick. The overall QB strategy does not change, just instead of 2026, we need to look in 2027. In the meantime we need a stop gap guy. Mills would have been that too, even better than Geno perhaps, but 3d round pick for a stop gap is just not good business. Geno for basically nothing is really the best option we had to execute our larger QB strategy, which hopefully will be successfully concluded in the 2027 draft.
