But you say this as if Glenn is the GM and making the moves, he is not. Glenn was hired before Mougey, Mougey is not tied to him and Glenn will get fired whether he has 3 wins or 6 regardless. The players they signed are not good enough to save his job.
Woody made them a team. It's how Woody designed his org chart until this year so yeah, Glenn and Mougey were joined at the hip until last year's debacle. That evidently is no longer the case and its Glenn's ass that's in the sling, not Mougey. Glenn can save his job, but its going to be difficult.
We just had a very successful organization TRADE assets for Fields when their QB is badly hurt. And this is AFTER he shit the bed here. Last year we had a successful organization make the same offer to him as us. I know it did not work out, and sure this is a knock against Mooge, but this is a fairly small knock. They got a lottery ticket, it didn't work with pretty crap offensive staff we had, we moved on, and collect a 6th in the process. This a knock, but is certainly not screwing up bad.
I agree with this. Getting anything for Fields after that 2025 performance feels like highway robbery.
This just reminds me of the header: "Jets strike gold with Mac and Bowles." I know its not entirely fair, but before I anoint anyone in this organization, I need to see some wins. He seems like a smart guy. I like what he's doing. The trades of Sauce and Quinnen could potentially set the team up for years. I like that he went into the offseason realizing this team could not stop the run. The defense should be much improved. I assume two of the first four picks will address the defense as well. Offensively, he's done OK. I didn't see an avenue for the team to greatly improve the offense, so its tough to hold that against him. I think G or C will be address in the first four picks. Geno is fine. Using the return on Fields to basically cover the cost of Geno was nice. At the end of the day, if the Jets flame out again, he's just another GM of a 7-27 team.
Well, the team is well on it's way to winning the "Offseason Super Bowl." Was listening to SiriusXM NFL channel on the way in today and Solomon Wilcots and Christian Fauria had Michael Ginnitti, co-owner of Spotrac, on air this morning and he literally made a point of talking about how impressed he was the the Jets offseason moves. Mougey certainly seems to be maintaining our "stellar" offseason mantle. Crossing my fingers this translates into a better team. One more comment, Mougey needs...no MUST find a way to draft Malachi Fields. That kid NEEDS to be on the NY Jets. Whatever it takes, that's my WR. Personally, I think he's the best WR in the draft. And, it's not even close. THIS needs to happen. That is all... lol
We must find a way to get Malachi ... no matter what! Wait, I think I heard this exact line before somewhere.
This makes sense, and similar point @Jets79 made about JD. But at the same time it's not a bad thing when a GM does not seem to have any obvious big mistakes, and mostly done well to very well. Doesn't mean we build a statue just yet, but it is a good thing. Also on JD, I think we overestimated his good start back in the day. While he came in late in a season, there were still opportunities to improve OL via trade. He trotted awful OL right away, which you simply cannot do. In his very first draft he fucked up immediately by missing on Wirfs and drafting no good players at all. He traded Leonard Williams for only a 3d round pick. He never addressed OL even early. He gave Sam no OL and no weapons (Perriman was the best weapon he had and downhill from there). He then traded Sam and got Zach (both awful mistakes but OK at the time we did not know). But still at the time of Adams trade he fucked up quite a bit already, but it was covered up by Adams' compensation. I do not see these fuckups with Mooge. He did Adams type trades not once, but twice, and many other good moves as well. So, I think he is doing well so far, no statue needs to be built, but it's not a bad thing when your GM is off to a competent start.
I doubt he's drafted here. It seems like Mougey has a type and Malachi Fields is not that type. Early moves suggest Mougey prefers receivers that gain separation and Fields is a big body that doesn't create separation. I would look at Lemon (USC), Concepcion (A&M), Tyson (ASU) as options he likes at the top... and Lance (N. Dakota St.), Bell (UConn) and Branch (Georgia) in the Day 2/Day 3 range based on the attributes Mougey has shown he likes
Yeah good points on the JD assessment…old news now and he definitely proved to be a very bad GM in hindsight. At the time, and especially when we hired him, I was really happy about it…unlike his immediate predecessors in Mac and Idzik, he had the resume and experience with great organizations, he had the right strategy about building the lines and using top picks on impact positions (both of which Mac and Idzik did NOT do), so I was very hopeful. As for OL, I don’t see it as a lack of trying…he did draft Becton and AVT high…I see it more as a lack of talent and personality / work ethic assessment on Becton and bad injury luck on AVT (which he couldn’t have predicted)…so more a lack of execution than a lack of strategy. In the end that doesn’t really matter…great strategy with terrible execution doesn’t work any more than terrible strategy with great execution does. You can suck at doing the right things, or be great at doing the wrong things…either way will fail. But again…JD is old news now and it was past time we moved on…dude had 6 fucking years and couldn’t ever field a winning team, and the execution got worse and worse as he got more desperate. As for Mougey, I like most of what we’ve seen so far…I don’t think he’s had any really terrible moves outside of Fields, and I’m not sure he was really the driver on Fields anyway, so I don’t really hold that against him too much. Sure he signed him so he has to own it to some extent, but for whatever reason, it feels like that move was more Glenn than Mougey and it sure feels like the tables have turned now where Mougey seems solid and Glenn is the sidekick as opposed to how it was (per Woody’s own words) a year ago where he hired Glenn and then Mougey was “his sidekick”. So far then, he had a good solid first draft…I don’t see it as a “hit it out of the park” draft as there are no immediately dominant players in it, Membou probably the closest to that. But a solid draft nonetheless. This free agency period has been good, maybe not “great”, but should show improvement, though the bar is fucking low. We got a bunch of hopefully better role players on D, no superstars but that’s ok for where we are in our rebuild…we’ll use the draft to find impact playmakers. On O, Geno may not be a great QB, but even if he’s average, that’s a HUGE improvement from what we had last year with Fields and Taylor and Brady…yes there’s a chance that Geno may not even be average if he looks more like Raiders Geno than Seahawks Geno, so we’ll have to see, and I’m no Geno fan really, but I do think he’s an upgrade over Fields. I’m a bit disappointed that we haven’t addressed WR yet, which tells me Mougey is probably looking to the draft for that help, but we’ll see. Obviously Mougey will either fly or crash based on these next two drafts, so that is at least something to look forward to.
Unfortunately, I don’t think Lemon makes it in the NFL much more than a mid-level role player. Definitely not 1st round worthy and for damn certain NO trade up. Call it a “feeling” after watching a crap ton of “tape.”
