I think there is a pretty good chance Smith and Fields end up starting games this season. It always goes that way with us.

We can HOPE that doesn't happen but I fear you are spot on with this one.

Gotta be honest, I really don't hate the way this all panned out. Yea you always want the first pick but next draft class looks so much stronger and we have 3 picks. With how bad the Colts offseason is going they might both be top 10. We'll have options whereas the first pick in this class has one option. We have some many good players available to us where we are. The new QB is going to walk into a good situation.

That would be amazing if we draft a great QB prospect with the high Colts pick, while we contend for (and dare I dream - make) the play-offs.

Depending what team picks up Fields after we release him I'd be open to betting his per/game 2026 production without Engstrand ends up looking similar or better then Geno's per/game swan song season production will be here.

You definitely wouldn't want to give me Tua on that same bet btw :)

That said i do hate the Geno acquisition less today then i did a few days ago. Mostly due to the fact I've come around more on the pro side of locking in the low cost 1 year investment. Murray/Cousins/Carr were all superior 2026 plays for me, but that perceived gap between them and Geno back in NY narrows quite a bit for me in the event any had to come with any future commitment beyond 2026. We'll see where those contracts land.

Honestly I still have no idea as to the cap and financial implications for both Taylor andFields, do we improve our cap and expenditures by keeping one of them a year or release them now?

You can't improve by keeping someone. Even if CAP looks better short term, it will end up counting more overall. Fields will be released, because we will save 10 mil, which are not guaranteed. So, I suspect Mooge will keep him until he has to trim the roster, hoping to trade him. It will be hard, but maybe he can get something small like what the Raiders got to Geno. But unlike in Geno's deal there is not language that the contract becomes fully guaranteed 1st week of league year. So, it will only become guaranteed in September. Hopefully Mooge can use it as a leverage to get something for him.

Taylor could stay as a back-up, but he is good for 1 or 2 games. Wentz is like an iron man compared to Tyrod. Ideally we want to get someone more durable.

Thanks. Agree with your comments. The timing makes sense. Ten mil is ten mil. Of course in my world that is a life time of income and then some. But this is the NFL, where a few mil are peanuts.

I would bet that both Justin Fields doesn’t start a single game next year for anyone unless it’s because of injury and Michael Penix beats out Tua. Luckily those are three names that don’t apply to us whatsoever so I don’t actually have to give a shit.

and I think the original terrible point that guy was trying to make is that WE have been better off trying out Justin Fields again.

Fields is just not an option either way. He quit on the team last year. F him, we move on

If we cut Fields with a post June 1st designation we get $10 mil in relief on 6/1. What I can’t find concrete information on is how that affects his Hits moving forward. I’ve seen some places say we would pay 9 million in dead cap in 2027, other places say we would pay $3 million in dead cap for the next three years.

the other option is we just cut him without the designation and eat the $22 million this year which makes us completely free of him come next season. I don’t think there’s one that’s better than the other but I think some guys coaching and GMing for their careers are going to push that money down the line and either make it their problem later or somebody else’s problem entirely.

    This is what I found……

If cut with a post-June 1 designation, New York will take on a $13 million dead-cap figure while saving $10 million in cap space in 2026. Fields will account for dead-cap hits of $3 million for each year from 2027 through 2029.

Yea I’ve seen this and I’ve seen all $9 mil occurring in 2027. Who knows, just get the guy outta here and gain $10 mil in cap space June 1. Win win.

I read somewhere the Jets will have alot of cap room next offseason as well. Not quite as much as this offseason but close.
