You will absolutely find someone who will say with a straight face that trotting Fields out there again this year would have been a better idea.
Without the history here this move makes all the sense in the world. A starting QB for nearly league minimum and 13 places from the late 6th to early 7th is a great deal for us. But the history is there, and karma does not favor the Jets ever. If there’s a way for this signing to embarrass us further, it will happen. Mougey and co just don’t respect or understand the curse on this franchise, and signing Geno pokes the bear right in the eye.
I’d argue it’s a great thing that Mougey is making the correct football move instead of giving a shit about what happened a decade ago or the fans feelings.
Each Night before bedtime I thank God for many things one of which being that I am beyond grateful / thankful/ happy that I gave up My Season Tickets a long time ago as I have never once looked back with an ounce of regret. Seeing that Woody still owns this team and looking at this train wreck of an organization along with watching the owner and Gm hire guys such as Glenn and then seeing them trade for Geno along with reading thru this thread reaffirms the realization that I came to years ago when I gave up my tickets = I made a very wise decision !
Here's 31 pages of "fans feelings" https://www.blackreign.net/raidernation/index.php?threads/fuck-you-geno-smith.12759/
OK, you are not serious. I mean it should not be breaking news that Geno sucked last year. Along with the rest of the team. Still he is our best option. lol QBs who have good years are not available as free agents.
No Im not serious in the slightest. You can't say a single thing in this thread without the same 3-4 people talking about how terrible he was last year. Everyone knows. No one thinks he's going to be Seattle era Geno. He's making $3 mil for one year to be a bridge QB. People are all up in their feelings because he's Geno. Take the exact same career fro 2017 on, change the guy's name and we'd all be in agreement that this is a perfectly fine one year option amongst a bunch of options that were all bad.
Agree completely. BA. Stating his performance last year was common knowledge discussed here at nausea. There was no sugar coating. But the circumstances for that performance are completely overlooked and short of a few guys here that dove into it properly totally ignored by the usual group. It stems from a blind hate on Geno and is a waste of time addressing it logically. To me as disappointing last year was for Geno, surprisingly he was not the worst QB by a landslide. We know who that was, interceptions or not. But that is history. The bulk of this TGG fan base is well aware of the strategy for 2026 as evident by their comments. 1-Make the running game an effective primary goal. 2- Fortify the OL and DL and transition the defense to a 3-4 hybrid 3- Select a QB to be a gap stop, without major investment or trade that can actually throw the ball accurately if properly protected and keep defenses honest. Last year under Fields that was a massive joke. 4- Use free agency to strengthen multiple positions. No big splashes on one or two, but upgrade multiple positions with NFL capable rotational players. This is a year of improvement to save your job, curb expenses, and above all position the team to support a long-term solution at QB in 2027. Seems to me they are actually following a solid plan for a change.
It can be both as well, I never liked Geno when he was here and I don't like him now. That said I also can also acknowledge that he was one of the best options given our circumstances.
Yup…no one is counting on him to be a top ten QB…he’s a placeholder…we had dregs to choose from and honestly I prefer him to Murray or Cousins…Murray because I think the dude is not a leader and his work ethic sucks and our locker room is bad enough as is, and also because someone like him would perhaps tempt Woody or the team to think they can win with him and maybe derail us from a real QB search, and Cousins because I can’t stand the guy and want nothing to do with him. To me, a better option may have been to try and trade for a younger guy with upside like Mills or McKee, but I say that with no knowledge of how realistic either guy would be in terms of trade resources needed…. It’s interesting that Mougey read the room enough to decide he had to trade for Geno instead of trying to sign him after getting cut…don’t know if that was because he feared we would not have been able to sign him if he had other options (which lets face, pretty much all other options would be better than us, even Arizona with a new HC instead of Glenn on the hot seat), or if it was driven by the contract restructuring that they did, but either way, seems like a shrewd GM move to me. The rest of free agency so far I don’t know what to make of it really…seems like we signed a bunch of role player type guys and I get that we needed them because our defense was absolute trash last year, but we haven’t really signed any difference maker … maybe Minkah could fit that description if he plays like he did a few years ago so we’ll see. I’m hoping we got better on D, and hard to imagine getting much worse, but honestly we just signed mid tier type guys. Hoping Mougey is an astute evaluator and maybe a couple of these guys develop into above average starters, but for now it looks like we are just trying to raise the floor on DL and LB a little bit…no shooting for the stars, just raise the floor. I hope we did that, but I don’t know enough about these signings to be able to have an informed opinion on that.
Very true. I didn’t like him then, but might learn to like him after this season. My hate for the rest of division surpasses all others.
I really didnt hate Geno. As usual, it all went wrong here and a lot of it wasn't his fault. He was supposed to sit, he only started because dumb shit Rex was playing Sanchez in the Snoopy Bowl and he had a season-ending injury. Then not only was Geno forced to start as a rookie that needed time to develop, we gave him Stephen Hill, a broken Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley as his top options. After that it went to pure shit with the Fitzpatrick signing and the punch heard round the league. Was he a model citizen? No. He was also a kid. He's 10 years older now, has success under his belt and tons of life experience. I have no clue how people are still mad about shit from a decade ago that wasn't even half his fault.
I am in the camp of Mooge doing a good job here because he got us the best available option. However, at the same time I completely understand why a few people are upset. Every option, including Geno, sucks. Not sure why it is so controversial for someone to be upset. Both reactions are normal. I also don't think it is because it is Geno specifically. Any QB we could have gotten would cause similar reaction, since there are no good ones we could get.
Oooo....oooo...oooooo Let me!!! I'll blow sunshine! Geno is gonna come in, rain TD's down all over the place and take us to the AFCCG! Yeeee haaawwwwwwww!!!! We'll all be like, "Namath who?" Now that I got that ridiculousness off my chest.... Look, I could go back to High School and see if Geno ever had an under 100 yd. throwing performance in his life but what good would that do? Nada. Just like it makes no sense to go all the way back to 2016 and expect that is what we'll see this season. At this point, if you have butthurt feelings about Geno Smith then that says a lot more about the individual fan than it does Geno. Last night I made it a point of digging around the internet to see what folks are saying. Literally, outside a fraction of people whom I KNOW to be Jets fans, everyone is saying how good of a move this is. Good in as much as we now have, at the very least, a competent NFL QB. No one is expecting this guy to do what I sarcastically posed a few sentences ago. NO ONE. Hell, I doubt even Geno himself had that cross his mind. However, if we need a veteran presence to come in, stabilize the position to the point it's not putting on less than 100 yd. passing displays, mentor a young guy this/next year then Geno is a good fit. Should it matter he was drafted by the Jets? Personally, I don't think so. For those that think it matters, well, I don't have much "for" you. Maybe a suggestion, don't ever go into management. This scenario is EXACTLY where "don't burn your bridges" comes from. You NEVER know where or how you'll end up. At the end of the day, the team paid a pittance for him and, health willing, he starts 16+ games for us this season (there goes that sunshine). He can take the rookies under his wing and teach them how to be professionals. At this stage of his career and the Jets existence, this is exactly what is needed and expected. If you look any deeper into this you'll go batshit. Just sayin'.
I never hated him, I didn’t think he was a good fit for us. The past is the past. He is far more mature now, so I wish him nothing but success. I’m more concerned about OL strength moving forward. I also believe the pick of WR at two is far from a sure thing. We shall see.
I disagree, 1,000%!! You tell me why anyone, fan or otherwise, should be butthurt about signing Geno Smith to a couple years for basically "lunch money." I'm going to argue this one to the ground. Did Geno come and take lunch money off these fans? Kidnap a son or daughter? Wreck a car, get a parking ticket, steal from them, kill a pet? What?? Oh, wait, he played QB, after getting drafted in the 2nd round, for a putrid franchise that has NEVER, let me repeat that NEVER, coached up a fargin' QB a day in their miserable franchise lives. EVER! Full stop. So, please....oh PLEASE put down the fucking tissues, sack up (sorry @jetophile ) and get with the damn program. A decade of hate for a 2nd round QB, who left a franchise that is in EXACTLY the same fucking spot it was when he left, is paltry and childish. Sorry folks...it's how I feel.
There's a valley between upset and some of the reactions here. I completely understand being down on the move, but we have people pretending this is just as bad as starting Fields. That's not gonna be validated, nor should it be.
There was only one person who equated to Fields, but even he then admitted a mistake and clarified quickly several days ago. He said: "Don't turn this into a Fields and Geno debate. I made a mistake by even introducing it, for it overshadowed my overall point... Neither is a good option" There is really no need to bring Fields up again, this was addressed. They make a valid point too, though I personally disagree because I like the move due to lack of good alternatives. I think the bigger lesson here is that we need to realize that winning a meaningless game and that by special teams, when you desperately need a QB, is not a good thing for us fans. Everyone would have felt a lot better now if we lost these special teams wins and had Mendoza coming in instead of Geno. And yes, @mezzavo, I say that with all due respect to Geno, liking the move to bring him in.
