You may be right when you’re analyzing a draft about 2-3 years in the future. But I’m pretty confident the Jets top 4 picks or at least 3 of them will be starting opening day barring injuries. That doesn’t mean they will be still be starting in 2028 etc….. hence the bust factor. Of course I’m hoping for long term starters…
Until we have a 2026 QB plan in place there is always a chance in play we do damage chasing the fairy tale paper fix. Whether that's us offering a guy like Carr/Cousins way too much future commitment money, or overspending draft capital in a trade. Unless we plan on grabbing more picks with a GW trade I'm not too hot on the idea of what being the top market bid on a guy like Alec Pierce probably ends up looking like to get him in a Jets uniform either. Lot of money being invested into a WR room that still lacks a legit 1. Especially for a offense build that is basically back starting at block 1.
One interesting nugget from this morning’s commute, as I was listening to NFL on SiriusXM, the Falcons are on record as they’re going to simply outright release Cousins. Whether you like him or not, if the Falcons do this, that should open up some options
Yeah I saw that too…they say they are going to release him on the first day of the new league year. I will start by saying that I hate this guy…to me, he is an accumulator…always played well enough to put up good stats, lots of yards completions etc., but never won when it counted, like in the playoffs. And there were always excuses for why he never won…oh the Minny D wasn’t good, shit like that. I just think he’s a safe passer and will put up nice stats but he ain’t the guy to go pull his team to playoff wins. On top of that, I just hate the guy for how he played us…to me, that shit holds water…you were so quick to mock us on publicity videos…so good. Go count your money. But fuck you. That’s me. All of that said, he would be better as a QB than most other options we may have, I get that. Better than Trubisky, Mariotta, or other free agents (assuming they are?). Murray may be a free agent soon or may not be, who knows, and also Tua…time will tell on how those teams will move. So Cousins may very well be the best option of free guys. Hard to know what trade options are being thrown around or discussed behind closed doors, but the only reasonable one I would be interested in via trade would be Davis Mills as he’s a good blend of some potential but he shouldn’t cost all that much in draft comp…probably a 3rd or maybe a 4th and a later pick. Who knows? I just don’t think Cousins solves anything for us other than giving Glenn a better chance to win a few games and stick around another year. Which is a very real concern for AG I’m sure. I think Cousins probably hurts us more than helps us in the real important view, which is going to be drafting a QB in 2027. I’d hate to have Cousins come aboard and win enough games to take us out of the top ten or so in draft position…
Absolutely feel what you are saying here. I added him to the list simply because he won't cost draft capital. Having said that, this dude is going to get overpaid, BIG TIME! Wouldn't surprise me if Cleveland OR LV pay him. LV, so they can sit Mendoza for a year or two and Cleveland simply because they are run almost as dumb as the Jets. However, in their case, he could come in and serve as a mentor for both Gabriel and Sanders. The Jets, there's no one to "teach" and we don't need someone coming in and jacking up our 2027 draft vibe. UNFORTUNATELY for us, we still DO NEED to have an actual starting QB. Unless we decide to seriously go into 2026 with Fields under center, he's probably one of the few options that will be strictly cash.
Cousins coming in here and having at least some raising the bar success would arguably help this team's long term outlook more then anything else we could do imo. I'll say the same thing there I said about Justin Fields last winter. Digging ourselves out of the annual offensive abyss is going to start with have the right mix of competent minds in that offensive coaching room. The higher we raise that reasonable exception bar of expected QB play this year, the easier it will be to figure out whether it even makes any logical sense to keep these coaches around a year from now. Much less let them be the one to draft/develop a brand new baby QB. Cousins is a little trickier because of his age, but at the end of the day he's probably still the best "make this at least somewhat work" bar setting option on the table. If the jets bring in Cousins and get the 2025 bottomed out version of Justin Fields out of him next year...big picture It likely doesn't end up mattering much where we end up drafting next year. Because that next QB likely isn't going to succeed *here* either. Tanner didn't end up being handed a built in and keep your job excuse for complete and utter failure. Neither should Reich and co.
Ironically enough if we do decide to seriously chase after Cousins I think Aaron Rodgers (who I'm pretty confident chooses to play in 2026) ends up being the key to realistically open up that possibility. In what basically projects to boil down to a 3 team race (that we'll need the other 2 teams to bow out of) if you don't see Arizona having a serious interest there (i kinda don't): Steelers - sounding like Rodgers is their guy if/when he decides to play in 2026 Vikings - no secret this was (by far) Rodgers preference choice last winter. Early rumors have them interested in a trade for Anthony Richardson in a compete for the job scenario with McCarthy. This happening closes the door on Rodgers, and doesn't allow a paved road to Pittsburgh to emerge for Cousins
Something tells me Cousin’s bad blood with Minnie might preclude an agreement there, plus he would not be getting a guaranteed starting role.
Rosenblatt’s Combine report says we are considered the favorites to land Anzalone which Is not a shock to anyone at this point. Also mentions Minkah Fitzpatrick as a potential trade candidate which Cimini also reported yesterday. Doesn’t make much sense to me, why would we give draft capital to the Dolphins and why would the Dolphins give us a good player? I guess in their mind we aren’t going to be containing anytime soon so I might as well take our pick.
Costello reporting that Cousins isn't on the Jets radar at all. I didn't think he'd have us on his radar so end result is the same. He's going to have job offers from teams he can get to the postseason just like he should have done with Atlanta if Folk didn't hit a 50+ yard game winner in the rain.
Like I mentioned a few days ago if Rodgers comes back in 2026 I think there is a pretty good chance this isn't the case. Not like Miami or Arizona are really any better positioned for future success then we are these days. So while the initial interest might not be there for Cousins now...only so many starting QB opportunities to go around if he ends up wanting one. Us not having interest makes much less sense to me. I guess Kay Adams made a decent hypothetical case the other day that he could possibility sign on to KC as the early season Mahomes fill-in in the event he really didn't care for the idea of signing on with a cellar dweller team. With an understanding in place they could/would explore a trade once Mahomes was back.
Time to move on from AR and Cousins discussions. Neither IMO, would be even a remote consideration by either the NYJ or the players. Both QBs are looking for the last hurrah with a contender before retirement, while the Jets are trying to resurrect from the worst performance ever, undergoing a massive transition year wherein the entire CS is under the microscope to strengthen this team properly and show some significant improvement on the field. Playoff contention is a far away dream, is more like do all you can not to survive for the 2027 draft.
I'm talking about Rodgers because his decision to retire or not is going to directly impact the current QB market we are going to be looking for a QB out of. If anything is LOL about that it is your getting to be fairly absurd level of defensive posturing over pretty much anything I post here. I was in no way talking about Rodgers there to remind *you* how wrong you were in past. Stop seeing attacks that aren't there and let it go already. Again, I don't think Cousins is at that same contend-or-retire mindset point Rodgers likely is. From all the reports I've seen Cousins isn't thinking about retirement and wants to continue playing ball. So I wouldn't guess he would leave an even bad looking opportunity on the table if that is what is needed to extend his career.
I like Fitzpatrick a lot. He's a very good all around football player and I'd be happy to have him here as safety is sorely needed. It does seem like a random name for Rosenblatt or Cimini to pull out of the hat though. Either he heard something or he's just speculating because Fitzpatrick is a local Jersey boy
