Tua is bad though. I'd have him below almost every logical option available. 15 picks in 14 games with an actual offensive mastermind designing the offense. He's also horrendous with the media... he came off like an idiot answering to the Miami media and no one gives a shit about Miami Dolphins football. Cousins (although I dont think he'll be available to us), Trubisky, Kyler, Mariota. Give me any of them over Tua. The only reason I wouldn't want Mac Jones over him is because we'd have to trade something valuable.
Man oh man the options are SO bad this year…they are kinda like that almost every year but this year is atrocious. I would hate to see Kyler or Cousins here…I just dislike both guys SO much, and I think either guy would do more harm than good. My thinking is that neither guy is a long term answer (that will need to come in the draft most likely next year), Kyler hasn’t done jack shit on a similarly bad bottom feeder like Arizona so there is zero reason to think he’d do any better here, plus, I absolutely believe that where there is smoke there is fire and for a young team that needs to learn how to win, a guy with a bad work ethic is NOT it…he is the anti-thesis to a guy like Brady who ate, slept, and breathed football and demanded that of his teammates…THAT is the kind of guy we need, not some entitled douchbag. Cousins? I don’t think I need to say much on this asshole who already just openly came out and let the world know how he played us for his own pocket…I get people do that, whatever, but he was so proud of himself…fine, go fuck yourself. In business, once I know who people are, I don’t go back and do more business with them because I know who they are. So yeah, I think both of these guys, the only thing they do is maybe win us a couple of more games than the 3 we won last year, so say they get us to like 5-6 wins…all that does is trash our draft position next year when we REALLY need it to be good. In any case, unless and until they get released, neither guy is worth trading for. But honestly, I wouldn’t want to sign them even if they were released. Trubisky and Mariotta are probably not as good as Murray or Cousins on the field, but they are not unlikeable douches or bad locker room influences like those other two. I’d prefer either guy, but honestly I don’t even know if they are free agents or available for a reasonable trade, and by reasonable, I wouldn’t be happy about giving up anything higher than a 5th round pick, but I have no idea if that would get it done if it came down to it. Tua? Who knows…need to wait and see what Miami does as he is not worth trading for. If he gets released, maybe worth a discussion, but dude is one hit away from oblivion…he really should retire, and in any case, he can’t be counted on for any amount of games… So yeah, not much out there…may need to have a low to mid level trade of some sort, but I don’t know who that would be…will Jameis Winston be made available? Davis Mills? Who knows… Sucks to be us…but it sure as shit sucks going into the offseason where even before the draft and before free agency, I sure feel no hope that 2026 will be anything other than yet another shit losing non-playoff season because our owner has no clue on anything…
Tua is not bad. We know who he is, he completes nearly 70% of his passes, good in the red zone, he throws for a 2TDs a game. He struggles with the deep ball and in the weather but ya know you can't say those things about Trubisky and Mariota because they've been rotting on the bench. He's a step above them Kyler Murray is at the level Tua is but he has issues in the head/leadership so I'd take Tua over him for that reason.
You haven't heard Tua make an ass of himself at the podium throwing his teammates and coaches under the bus this past year? There's more than just football reasons they don't want this guy around Miami anymore, but also plenty of football reasons.
I'm still riding what @Rockinz floated. Fields.....1st, 2nd and last options. Why would anyone want to UPGRADE the QB room with FA's or has beens when we're TRYING to get the 1st pick in 2027. I don't follow the logic. We have a QB, he's under contract and that's that. Maybe find a scrub or two to back him up but damn it, we should be going into 2026 with the mindset that Fields is the starter. Contrary to some, Glenn does NOT have a plan of any significance. This dude is flyin' by the seat of his pants and it's plain as day to anyone with BOTH eyes open. It doesn't matter WHO this team brings in this year it's going to suck. Period. Spend this draft/off season to bolster the roster around the QB. Still draft a kid later on down the draft but, realistically, they aren't doing anything of significance other than backing up Fields. Pretty easy solution if you ask me.
Tua's production in Miami was O'Brien/Pennington level. So better than anything the Jets have gotten since Namath. I still don't want him though because given his injury risk, he's not a long-term answer and all he'll do is help the Jets win 6 games and miss out on next year's QB class.
For starters there is no guarantee bottoming out and being absolutely terrible gets you the 1st pick or QB you end up wanting. Otherwise we'd be drafting Mendoza this spring. There is also real and building block gains to be made by getting better. Even if it's just making a step forward or 2 that you can then take into 2027. While hopefully taking another step 2 or forward from there. Lastly these long and drawn out regular seasons to watch as fans are brutal. With last year and after week 1 being one of the most uninteresting and frustrating (for me at least) in recent memory to slug through. Purposely trying to sign up for a reply of that with no real chance of that grind hopefully being more enjoyable to watch? No thanks. All that said if I like the OC hire enough and *he* thinks he can get a lot more out of Fields then a completely in-over-his-head Engstrand did I would probably be ok with that for 2026. As long as they also brought in a legit backup flyer to fall back on (aka: not some old and injury prone Tyrod Taylor or no real upside Skylar Thompson type).
my biggest worry is they burn valuable draft capital to bring in someone like Murray and we end up getting 5 or 6 wins and picking in the #4 - #7 range in the draft and then have no chance to get the #1 QB prospect (again) or have to burn a ton of picks to move up - unless they do something wild like trade for Burrows or Jackson then nobody that comes in is going to get the Jets to the playoffs so the only thing they can do is hurt the Jets chances of finally landing a franchise QB
Well, sounds like Kyler Murray will be available: https://x.com/KSzn2021/status/2018830021280903647 I really hope the Jets don't fall for it, I really do.
What would be the issue for Murray as a bridge qb? Seems like a pretty good option if there is no/ minimal compensation
- He is expensive, 42.5 mil 2026 and 36.5 mil guaranteed (5 days after the start of this League year). I do not think he will renegotiate like Rodgers did. - Small and injury prone. Bad combination IMO. Given his frame, it's a bigger and bigger risk as he ages. All while getting paid 40 mil. - In his original extension had a clause to study film. Huge red flag for me. I would much rather go with Brissette, Cousins, Wentz. Would cost A LOT less and I am not sure would be much worse.
Ok that's fair. To your first point, I dont really care about the money he's owed next year. Mougey, like other good GMs, could move money around to lessen the cap hit. I like that they have the option to keep him next year and he can be a bridge, or get out of the contract. Like Reich, there's way worse options but probably a couple better ones.
He definitely can move the money around, but you still have finite amount that the owner is willing to pay. Woody for all his faults, is not cheap, but that's 40 mil annually for two years that could be better spent. I don't think Murray is worth the investment, that is a decent chunk of money can be spent for other needs. It does not give us a shot at a long term QB, and given the injury history, size and attitude I think would be a terrible waste of significant resources better spent elsewhere.
someone has to play QB. I have a feeling 3 weeks into Ty Simpson we will be dreaming for Kyler Murray anyway
I want ZERO to do with Kyler Murray. ZERO. The studying this is a HUGE red flag for me. When has anyone EVER heard of a team trying to do that? NEVER. If it’s THAT bad that the team felt they needed it…then that’s enough for me to say stay the fuck away. And yes, I will concede he is a better QB than all the scrubs we’ve had here over the years, and I’ll even go so far as to say he’d probably be the best QB compared to the available scrubs we’d be looking at outside of trading for someone better. But… I just hate the guy…terrible work ethic, which I think sets a very bad vibe when it’s coming from the QB, NOT a leader, will not elevate anybody. All he would do for us is win us a maybe 2-3 more games…putting us right out of the sweet spot for a QB in next years draft. This kid is no savior. I FOR SURE would not trade for him…not even a fucking 5th rounder And I would FOR SURE not pay him huge dollars. Let him go fuck up some other team… Getting him would be SO Jets-y…just a reach by a coach desperate to win a few games and keep his job or an owner tired of getting shit on But it solves NOTHING I would hate the move even if he wasn’t a douche….I think he’s a good not great QB…but with his poor work ethic and terrible leadership on a young team? Not a chance I want him anywhere near this locker room.
40 mil isn't that much on a NFL payroll for a QB, plus it's short term money. 1 year, 2 max and he's gone. We're not hamstrung like the Browns. Not that I want him, but any QB we can get to get this team going without mortgaging the future would be a win IMO
There’s zero chance we’re going with Murray. We had 3 OC finalists and hired the one that has never worked with a mobile QB in the mold of Murray. More and more I think we’re going to target Trubisky and maaaaaybe draft Simpson.
