Btw, these of us who wanted JL, there was simply no chance, whether Glenn let him calls plays or not. Look at the latest options the guy has: https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/2016836951236608274 Bills, Chargers, Ravens all interested. It was nice of him to take an interview given the connections he has to Mooge, Glenn, and the Jets, but he was never coming here regardless. It was basically either Wink or Glenn calling plays, and out of the two we got the better option. There is some hope JL ends up outside the division, which would be a good news.
So as it turns out, Duker wasn’t even interviewed until the day before he was hired, and he only did a virtual interview. Duker is Chris Harris without the embarrassment of having it look like we couldn’t hire and outside coach to work with Glenn. Who else even interviewed Duker for a DC position? We hired him in a day from a virtual call. How can people not see this. The guy is a defensive passing coordinator, same as Harris was for us. Glenn knew that promoting Harris to DC would give the optic that no one else would take the job working under Glenn, so he called his buddy who happens to be unemployed and wasn’t on anyone’s radar to be a DC and stuck him in the position to save face. Our Head Coach is a grade A backstabbing dick that has and will do anything to save his own ass.
This hire is all on Glenn getting “his guy” so when we get pounded the first 5 games that’s also all on him!
When was the last time a legit established DC candidate took a DC job where he wasn't going to be calling plays?
I don't know if this is about the optics, because one thing Glenn did is made the optics the absolute worst it has ever been. He is a butt of all jokes in Mobile, according to multiple reports, everyone is laughing at him. Everyone already knows no one wants to work under this lame duck coach. I think he knew Duker from Detroit enough to want on his staff, Duker is willing to be a DC with Glenn calling plays, and that's really all there is to it. Virtual interview or not does not matter, he knows the guy for years. No sought after DC is coming here for 1 year especially with Glenn calling plays. But to be fair, I am not blaming Glenn for this. He should have been fired 100%, but Woody is a moron and didn't fire him. What is he supposed to do now to improve the defense that was #31 in the NFL? He did exactly what you and I discussed over 3 weeks ago: https://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/dc-hiring-predictions.101229/#post-4480573. Harris or Duker does not make material difference. Yeah, it was done in a stupid way where it took him 8 interviews to realize something we said long time ago, but he did come to the right conclusion eventually. Shit show process, but ultimately the best result he could really get, which we called a while back.
It may be the best end result at this point given that we all agree that no serious DC candidate was going to come here anyway, but especially so if he doesn’t get to call the plays…that’s a crazy situation…why would anyone put their career on the shoulders of a lame duck HC calling plays for him? The part that just doesn’t excite me really is about Glenn calling plays…I guess if he had led a top 5 D like Saleh did, then I’d be excited about it, but Glenn led pretty much mediocre defenses for most of his time as Detroit’s DC…yes ok he improved them so I have to give him credit there, but he’s not like some super hot defensive mastermind. I’m not overly worked up about it because honestly I don’t think it moves the needle…he’s still the HC, he’s still clueless, he’s still arrogant, and I think the most likely outcome is we will still suck…badly…and he’ll likely get fired before the season is over…I believe that to be true regardless of who he gets to be his DC and regardless of if he calls plays or not. The end result I don’t think changes all that much…
Since it seems Glenn is calling the plays I guess whatever he ran in Detroit? 4-3 Hybrid I believe but he runs some Cover 1 and stuff too. Most modern Ds focus less on a base front.
Hybrid system, man to man, versatile fronts in Detroit but he's made mention of adapting to the talent you have. I think Reese is a homerun pick when you take into account what his defense looked like in Detroit, the fact that JJ can rush the passer and stop the run, WMD has the athleticism to get to the passer and Briggs has turned into a very versatile IDL.
From what I recall he had a year of 3-4 in 2021 before they drafted Hutch. After that almost exclusively 4-3 and all success he had was with it. EDIT: Found some cool details: https://www.matchquarters.com/p/tdetroit-lions-2024-defense-scheme-hybrid-players-glenn-sheppard
Sr Bowl, from Mobile, Alabama. Basically the sentiment is that Glenn is an absolute joke, how is handling the coaching, hires, etc. People do seem to respect Mooge though.
Can you post what’s been said and from where? I’m not challenging you, I just wanna see who’s reporting this.
