If the Jets are in the market for a new HC in 2027 McDermott > Tomlin. Is my preference. Though it sounds like Gruden could be in the mix? The Jets reached out to him about the OC job? I don't want Gruden he's had issues and I don't think he's all that great.
Gruden the guy who was blatantly racist? No way, there is a reason he is working for the shithole bartstool sports. He is the one who leaked to them about turning down a chat so they could make of the Jets. Woody Johnson may just hire him tho
I know. But it gets to the point where it seems like you’re not even really looking objectively at some of this. If they were previously an offensive coordinator they’re worth it? Monken changing jobs a billion times in 20 years doesn’t concern you?
It does to some extent, and he is not top of my list, Kubiak is, but why don't you think he should be somewhere on the short list? His offense last 3 years was 4, 3, and 11. And 11 was with Lamar missing time and really hobbled this year. He did better than Greg Roman there at the end. Harbaugh wanted him for the Giants. Had #12 in Tampa also before. Why don't you think it is objectively good? I am not looking at all OCs, but successful ones. Look at it like this, last year I wanted to interview offensive guys like Ben Johnson, Brady, Coen, McCarthy, Monken. They all ended up as HCs. Coen and Ben did well 1st year. I don't know why you think this is not objective, I think it actually aged pretty well, even though of course not everyone will hit.
It’s not really as easy to say “he did better than Greg Roman” since the offenses from 2019-2024 ebb and flow with Lamar. Not to mention Monken had Derrick Henry the entire time and like I said, Harbaugh took all the heat for it but the Ravens have notoriously blown big leads while not giving Henry the ball in the fourth quarter since they’ve acquired him. That’s on the OC. Roman’s also a career offensive coordinator who has been with a Harbaugh every year of his career so even if you don’t want to argue Monken was better (which I’d say they’re probably about the same), that’s not impressive. I also think anyone here could’ve stumbled into a top 10 offensive with prime Lamar. They had the #12 scoring offense in the NFL in 2018 but Dirk Koetter was the head coach who I believe called the offense (we can look that up). There’s also more context needed for that season. They had the 31st ranked scoring defense and two gunslinging QB’s who collectively led the NFL in interceptions. So yeah they winged the ball around the yard when they were down all year long. They turned it over a ton too.
Monken took over play calling in 2018 and the offense improved to #12 scoring and 3d in yards. Again, not saying he is a perfect candidate, but someone I thought was good enough of an OC where we should have interviewed him. The Harbaugh wanted to bring him to the Giants is also meaningful. I would have taken him over Glenn based on record, but that's just me. You don't have to like him, but I think there is a solid objective basis for bringing this guy in for a discussion.
That's what I get for not looking it up! Point is, I respect the research you do but it you seem to shrug off stuff that doesn't match what you want and pedestal what does. Like a Newsmax. A few days ago you were all over Wink changing jobs 3 times and 4 years (ignoring he was with the Ravens for 9 years and you were counting it against him), but now it's not an issue because its an O coordinator and you want an OC as head coach.
Looks like he lost those play calling duties in November. The results before/after other than the Redskins game are mixed and probably average out to about the same. Don’t feel like doing the math. https://www.nfl.com/news/dirk-koetter-i-have-my-own-reasons-for-calling-plays-0ap3000000987020
He called them for 1 game, where they got 500 yards, but only 3 points: " Todd Monken was the official offensive coordinator (OC) and primary play-caller for most of the 2018 season, head coach Dirk Koetter did take over play-calling duties for one game. Monken's Role: Monken called the plays for the first eight games of the season, during which the Buccaneers' offense was one of the most productive in the NFL in terms of yards and points. Koetter's Game: Koetter took over play-calling responsibilities for the Week 10 game against the Washington Redskins on November 11, 2018, in an attempt to establish the running game and control time of possession. Despite racking up over 500 yards of offense, the team only scored 3 points due to four turnovers. Return to Monken: Following that single game, Koetter returned play-calling duties to Monken for the remainder of the season." I think we both learned more about Monken 2018 season than we wanted to know. lol
Fair enough but he point remains. The context of them turning the ball over and trailing with Jameis/Fitzpatrick leads me to believe that I don’t really credit that offense as a success
You are a tough judge. These QBs are not exactly world beaters. Jameis has always been a TO machine. These are career backups, Fitzmagic season notwithstanding. I think not bad, especially if you subtract the game where he did not call plays, which would make their offense #7 in scoring ppg and 4 fewer TOs.
Daboll goes to the Titans as an OC to Bob. Looks like Kubiak will go to the Raiders. https://x.com/NFL/status/2016273829283143851
