I like Bain. I'm not interested in tearing him down. He's strong and consistent, I'd be fine if he was the pick. I just think Reese has a higher ceiling and at pick number 2 thats what I want
Jets went Membou who was a solid product out of college and not a project like Mekhi was. Mouge made that pick, I think he won't overthink this and take Bain a premium position 3 down player. Tired of the short arms like a T-Rex narrative, the guy is a fucking TRex on the field and OT are shitting their pants trying to contain him
So, last night's game was the first college game I watched wire to wire in a very long time. A couple thoughts... Thought 1 It's irrelevant to the Jets, but, Mendoza looks like who I thought he was. He's a very very good college QB and has the POTENTIAL to be a good to above average Pro QB. Definitely a kid that can perform on a team with pieces but he's not going to elevate anybody, at least not without a few years under his belt. A team could do worse, but he's going to last 5 seconds behind that trash that the Raiders will put in front of him and he'll be lucky to get out of that organization alive. Thought 2 How realistic would it be to draft Bain at #2 and trade back up to take Reese somewhere just after? How far do you see either failing? Just spit balling here. Final thought, though, is Bain at 2. That there is a man among boys, seriously. Health willing he could set the edge for the Jets for the next decade. Him on one side and some version of J.J./McD IV on the other is tantalizing. You can only double one of them. If the Jets could take #16 and add a 3rd or something and get back into the top 10, would Reese be there... I HATE the thought of trading but, if you could get out of it and ONLY lose ONE pick, I'd do that in a second. The first 2 levels of the D would be rockin'.
Here are all Bain's reps against Indiana: https://x.com/NFL_DF/status/2013655227279286424 There is a lot to like, this is really good front he went against. Even on that incredible Mendoza TD, he actually won his rep, but Mendoza stepped in and ran.
The play at 35 seconds was great. One thing I like about Bain is he almost never gets overpowered. He has a really strong base, sets the edge well, and doesn't get pushed out of the play. Violent hands too which is always good for a pass rusher. Reese has more upside after watching more of him though. Crazy athlete and has the frame to put on more weight without it slowing him down since he's already very lean. The Ohio St. edge rusher pedigree is good too. Tricky thing about Reese is a lot of his sacks came from these delayed blitzes from LB rather than from the edge. I'll be happy with either guy. They both jump off the tape.
Bain looks to be the guy. He’s pro ready and that first step is legit. His heavy handy gets him off blocks. High motor, that guy didn’t want to come off the field. Nice bend for his body type. He reminds me of Bruce Smith. Arvell Reese is a pure athletic LB that could play any LB position. His speed, bend and awareness on the field is very good. He reminds me of Shaq Thompson. If I had to choose I’m taking Bain. I feel with a 4-3 D he can work up and down the line to get 1-1 miss matches. I feel Reese is either a Will LB in a 4-3 or a OLB in a 3-4.
I just don’t get Reese. He’s way too small to play DE, but his speciality is pass rushing? We already have this with Will McDonald. He’s not a good enough true Mike LB anyways to justify at 2
You’re getting caught up over a matter of five-ten pounds though. If he was “250” you wouldn’t have that concern.
I like your train of thought as far as building the defense. However I don’t see the Jets trading back up to get Reese. I don’t see them trading back up from #16 for anybody to be honest. If they were though I would be hoping it would be for Downs. But I think they are going the FA route for safety or at least that’s the plan. At this point assuming they stay at #2 I’m pretty sure Bain would be the pick. At #16 I’m thinking they probably go for a big WR such as Boston perhaps. At #33 they look for offers and they may move down 4-5 slots. Personally I would target LB with that pick a guy like Anthony Hill. But it really depends on what they get in FA. I don’t think they go QB until late in day 2 maybe even early day 3. A guy like Beck would be good value at that point. I see his ceiling as a low level starter - dependable back up. Of course in this scenario they are still drafting a QB in ‘27. The entire QB room needs to be re-worked - they can use a dependable back up too….
Aside from Bain or Reese, is there ANY other pick at 2 that makes sense to you guys? I'd say the only other one would be Downs but it would be crazy to draft a Safety with all of the needs on this team at key positions.
I’m not even thrilled with Bain or Reese, I’d really prefer a trade down if we can find a partner. Both these guys have concerns. I think Bain has a high floor and will be like a Sean Ellis type, but I don’t think he’ll dominate like Garrett. Reese, super athlete but I can’t get behind using a pick that high on a guy without a position. There’s tons of great options lower in the draft, and I’d much rather have more picks in 2027.
I'm in on Bain, he's just a beast all day long. He was handling an Oline with an average age of 23, and with supposedly short arms. You can just see it in the way he moves, he's going to feast at the pro level.
See my comment in the other thread... I like where you're thinking here. However, I would like every Jets fan on the planet to "shelve" that word and slap POTENTIAL along side it. I'm "done" talking about potential and upside. This team doesn't NEED potential and upside right now. Not that they've ever been able to actually coach UP to someone's upside or potential...ever! This team needs STARTERS. Guys who lambasted people TODAY not the POTENTIAL to lambaste someone 3 years from now. We can bring upside and potential back into the mix when they have a team that is competent NOW. Just my personal opinion. No DII or DIII projects. No "fringe" guys... No, I want power 5 Big Boy school starters who made their career out of beating up on other power 5 big boy schools. Not padding their stats on the Temple Owls of the world. Find them. They are out there.
The only other players worthy of #2 is Downs or Love in my opinion. The issue is their position. I love both of them and wouldn’t be upset at all if we took either one because their talent at their position is pro bowl potential. Maybe even all pro. Love has some of the best contact balance I’ve ever seen since Barkley. Such an important trait for a RB. Downs has amazing instincts, excellent tackler and athleticism at safety. If I’m Moug I’m trying to figure out the DC first before falling in love with a guy. Also need to figure out Hall situation.
I personally want Bain Jr, but In the grander scheme of things if it keeps us from drafting a QB at #2 I could care less what people want to say about the logic in drafting a <position> at 2 in *this* draft. So with that said I think I might have spent the last 2 days talking myself into being Team Weapon. I mean once you get past a point of pretending that GW has ever elevated anybody around him the Jets currently don't have a single legit difference maker type on the offensive side of the ball. If they end up believing Love can be that guy, and while then building the vision out from there, I'm generally good with it. At the very least it'll make for a more interesting watch within a 2026 season that already projects to be really really bad. Maybe even worse then last year minus Breece. Braelon Allen and Isiah Davis are both basically JAGS imo, and the idea a season where they carry a run heavy offense couldn't be any less interesting to me.
