I don't think you are factoring in how tall Reese is. It makes his weight a little different for his size. Just for fairness on the argument. Reese is great against the run, extremely strong. He rag dolls OL in college. If you are judging someone strictly on physical measurables, I think you are doing a disservice to yourself when ranking these guys.
People keep trying to pigeonhole him as one thing but he’s not one thing. I’m not calling him the next Parsons but the comparisons make sense in terms of skill set, and no one is labeling him too small despite being an inch shorter and 7 pounds heavier. You’d assume Reese bulks up as well. A good DC would have a field day with this dude. And all of these guys come from coaching trees that love to be fast and create havoc.
Reese is the same height as McDonald, and McDonald was dead last in the NFL DE against the run. I'm not saying Reese would be a wasted pick like McDonald is, most mocks have the jets taking him at 2. But if the jets plan on starting Reese, McDonald and Sherwood next year, none of them over 250, they will get totally run over (again) IMO. They have got to add some bigger, stronger, and heavier players to that front 7, especially at DE (where McDonald plays) if they want to compete .
What @IIMeanDeanII and @BroadwayAaron said got me really excited about Reese tbh. Well, as excited as I can be in this draft with no top QB available to us and no clear #2. It looks like the guy is actually good against the run in College, which McD never was. Also, as far as frame, keep in mind McD weighed in 239lb at the combine when he was 24 years old. He was an older prospect where you are basically taking a guy a couple of years older than a typical senior. It's not impossible to bulk up playing weight, but much harder when you are 24 as opposed to when you are 21 and body is still naturally developing for a few more years. Reese will be 21 in August. He weighed 236 a year ago, and now 243. He will continue to grow for 2-3 more years. I will not be surprised by the time combine rolls he will already be 250 and still under 21 years old. He could easily be 255-260 by the time he is McD age and stops developing physically. How big do you want your DE to be? I think 250-260, while being a strong good run defender, is not bad at all. With him and JJ starting and McD rotating in, this could be quite a good room. Still need another guy there, maybe a bigger guy like you said (JFM type), but on the bench with McD.
I didn't put much thought into it. He would have the best resume of any Head Coach in Jets history after Weeb and Parcells, but you're right, we could totally do better.
Same, unless I’m thinking of someone else, he’s a versatile LB, which we are in need of. We could also use a DE who can get pressure on the QB and is stout against the run. Since we have 2 pass rushing DEs, and are in sore need of talent in the entire LB room, you probably have to go with a LB earlier and a stouter DE later on.
Good question, I have asked that to AI and got this: "Multiple prominent draft analysts project college linebacker Arvell Reese as a full-time edge rusher (DE) in the NFL. These analysts often point to his elite physical traits, burst, power, and high sack production in a part-time edge role at Ohio State. Analysts Projecting Reese as an Edge Rusher Jordan Reid (ESPN): Reid has explicitly stated that he prefers Reese as an edge rusher in the NFL, where his combination of "bend, power and play violence can be best utilized". Field Yates (ESPN): Yates projects Reese in an edge role in his mock drafts and notes that Reese "posted 6.5 sacks as a primary edge rusher this year" in college. Matt Miller (ESPN): Miller views Reese as fitting the mold of players who transition from college stack linebacker to a full-time pass rusher, similar to Micah Parsons. Dane Brugler (The Athletic): Brugler has mocked Reese as an "LB/EDGE" and points to his potential to be a "total game wrecker on the edge". Mike Renner (CBS Sports): Renner described Reese as a "traits-based projection with high-end upside as a pass rusher" and a "modern hybrid linebacker who would add pass-rushing juice from anywhere on the Titans' front seven". Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz (USA TODAY): Middlehurst-Schwartz suggested that an NFL team could convert Reese to a primary edge rusher, leveraging his "Micah Parsons-like movement abilities". While other analysts like Mel Kiper Jr. still officially list him as their top off-ball linebacker prospect, the consensus among many is that his exceptional physical tools and production as a pass rusher make his best professional position along the defensive line as an edge defender." Seems like quite a few think he will translate to NFL as Edge. Would he not be effective there, maybe more effective than in College?
@BroadwayAaron add Daniel Jeremiah to the list. Joe Blewett from JetsXFactor as well. 11:05. Seems like making him full time Edge IS actually more prevalent than not.
So it sounds like a lot of people think he could be a full time edge especially if he puts on the weight his frame can support. I mean I guess but I have no idea why you’d limit a guy who can line up anywhere and plays the run fantastically while also being able to drop into coverage. If they use him in a Parsons role then I don’t care what they call him.
You didn't get my overall point. Despite that. He's an athletic freak who rag dolls OL on a regular basis. Setting the edge isn't just something he can do, he's really good at it. He was dominate against the run, and is extremely explosive against the pass. Reese would be a great addition to this defense. Caleb Downs would be too, if I'm honest. OSU had an amazing defense, which they aren't always known for, but they have some really solid players in this draft. Please. Again, if you are just looking at cliff notes, measurables, you are doing yourself a disservice. The irony is... If you are looking at Bain because of his weight, and you think he is better against the run because of it. You'd be wrong. Reese wins in this department because of his athletic nature, elite strength, high IQ, and has amazing side line to side line speed. To me, he is just well rounded in every aspect of his game, but If I had to call him out on something. I'd say he needs more seasoning in coverage, not a big deal for a guy of his caliber coming out of college.
Give me Wink, this is a sinking ship with AG at least all the blitzing would be entertaining next year.
Maybe it will be like the Gase-Williams season where ol' Gregg dialed up that 0-blitz on the Raiders Hail Mary that lost the game.
