No idea on Leonhard going to the Giants but it would make sense as didn’t he play for Harbaugh at Baltimore before we signed him here? There is no connection to Glenn as far as I know And if I’m a DC candidate, that is a no-brainer decision to go with Harbaugh and stability over Glenn and dysfunction. I guess the only upside to coming here for a prospective DC would be the chance to be named interim HC once the current coach gets fired, which there is a decent chance he will given the performance we saw
Dolphins DB coach "Jets interviewed Dolphins DB coach Matt Araujo for their vacant DC position according to league source" https://nfltraderumors.co/jets-interviewed-dolphins-dbs-coach-mathieu-araujo-for-dc-job/
DC interviews per the team: Mathieu Araujo, Ephraim Banda, DeMarcus Covington, Daronte Jones, Jim Leonhard, Wink Martindale, Chris Harris and Jim O'Neil. Leonhard far and away my top option. Jones from Minny is very intriguing. Wink is the safe choice. If we walk away with any of those three I like it. Covington and Banda are interesting names. Both coached strong positional groups.
I would not be surprised if they go with Jim O'Neil. Worked with AG in Detroit. I wouldn't be happy, but hopefully, if they suck again, Woody will clean house.
There is going to be at least 9 openings and probably more so I'm not expecting any come here based on our current situation. Leonard is obviously the best choice but I would put the chances of him coming here at sub 1%. He has crossed paths with Moug, Glenn and obviously the Jets so he took the Zoom interview out of respect more than likely. Martindale has only been linked to us (huge red flag) and hasn't been a good DC since Baltimore (this actually would fit Glenn's preferences from what we have seen with an antiquated system). If I had to bet on it I would say Wink is the guy followed by O'Neal. Wink is probably sitting next to his phone to see if any other teams call which is why there hasn't been any movement. None inspire any confidence really which is great for me but understand the other's perspectives.
Not sure, but I thought I read Wink prefers to run 3-4 alignment , which is obviously different than Glenn's 4-3. I think the jets personnel is better suited for 3-4 w McDonald (if they keep him) as OLB, not DE. McDonald gets totally engulfed playing defense end, and Sherwood (if they keep him) would benefit from an extra LB on the field, w less attention then paid to him. In any event, I hope the jets are smart enough to hire a DC familiar w and who prefers the alignment Glenn wants to play. Since they are the jets, I would not be surprised in they forget to consider that, also. After all, this is the team that made Zack Wilson the #2 overall pick in the draft after totally failing to consider that he had only 1 decent year in college against a creampuff schedule that a high school QB could beat.
Wink runs pods of people if I had to try to define it. I don’t think it would be considered 3-4 or 4-3, it changes by the snap. He wants speed for pressure, we have that with WMD and JJ. Potentially Bain or someone like Reese who gets to the QB from multiple spots on the defense.
I don't want Wink. He is in the College ranks for a reason. I'm hoping for Leonhard. Someone with a high IQ and understands todays game. I have no faith they get this right. I will continue to hope as a fan though.
For whatever it is worth, I like Bain over Reese. Bain checks in at 270 lbs, Reese at 243, and Bain is much more physical. The jets already have lightweights Sherwood and McDonald, and for some unknown reason seem married to them. The jets need some beef on the DL and LB. I know Reese is more often mocked to the jets, but they enough tweeners already getting run over at DE and LB,
Two different guys to me. Reese is light for a DE but he’s a menace against the run and can cover. I’m not worried about his size.
I don’t know enough about either prospect to have an informed opinion on who we should choose between Bain and Reese, but I DO have enough knowledge about the Jets to say with confidence that whomever we end up choosing, it will almost certainly be the wrong guy
