Was thinking, there are many directions the Jets could go - draft, FA, trade, etc. What do you think the Jets will do (not what you want)? Here's my prediction (again not what I want, but this is very Jets like): Starter - Kirk Cousins (37 years old) Backup - Bailey Zappe Rookie/PS - Cade Klubnik, Brady Cook
Starter - Kyler Murray Backup - Bailey Zappe/rookie PS - Brady Cook Zappe gets cut in November when we enter “it’s time to see what the rookie can do, let’s get him practice reps” territory.
I think it depends on how much they, and the rest of the league like Simpson. I could see them moving up from 33 to like 27 or so to take him. I just don't know how the rest of the league views him. If they don't like Simpson, I think they sign someone like Cousins or Murray if he gets cut. Starter- Cousins Backup- Zappe 3rd String- Simpson As long as the team doesn't completely implode, drafting a rookie QB may be able to keep Glenn's job safe for another year.
Hopefully keeping Glenn's job safe another year isn't the priority when deciding on QBs but you know it will be. We just need to get through the year without sacrificing the future. What I want McKee Zappe Late round flyer What I'll get Murray Zappe Simpson I actually like Simpson but I can see him shooting into the top 10 and I'm definitely not interested at 2 and frankly not at 16 either unless they love him. I don't want him to jeopardize us picking a QB next year, throw him in after week 6 if you are going to draft him to see if he's the future but that won't happen with Murray or Cousins. Worst case scenario we play Simpson the last 2 games and he shows flashes so we skip QB in 27 ala Hackenberg.
Why do people think Cousins would come here? The Falcons were theoretically a Nick Folk game winner away from winning their division with Cousins starting. There will be a team looking for a bridge QB that can offer him a shot at the playoffs. Dolphins if they move on from Tua, Colts if they bring back Jones and let him heal, even the Steelers in rebuild mode offer more upside.
Tyler Huntley/Jimmy Garropolo - fighting for opening day starter Trinidad Chambliss - prized rookie will watch and learn until about Week 9 and then the keys are handed over to him Cook or some other scrub as a placeholder
My logic has nothing to do with Cousins, I was trying to think in true Jets fashion - who is the oldest Qb the Jets could realistically sign who some fans would like and help win some games but would never make it through a complete season. For backups, I needed to brainstorm to ensure I put guys in place with no starting potential. In my scenario, the Jets win just enough to secure the #5 pick in '27. However it so happens when '27 rolls around - in "true" Jets fashion - 3 Qb's end up going in the top 4.
I can’t see whoever the Falcons hire being willing to part with Cousins. Penix won’t take snaps under center. He’s torn his ACL’s 5 times in his life and Cousins was better when he came in anyways. I’m also starting to think the same about the Cardinals and Murray now that Gannon is gone. Gannon also seems like a huge dickhead. I’ve vocalized Sam Howell as my low cost veteran. I like Nussmeier a lot if we can get him in the 3rd or 4th. If I’m going deeper into the 5th or 6th I’d take Sawyer Robertson from Baylor or Cole Payton the kid from North Dakota State.
Make no mistake, the Falcons view Penix as their long term franchise QB even after the injury this year. And Cousins' wildly bloated contract is going to make it very hard for Atlanta to keep him. I want nothing to do with Cousins but they may not be able to keep him financially.
See I think Arizona is going to want to wipe the slate completely clean with a new coach, new system, new locker room. Kyler is part of the problem they’re not part of the solution. If they are willing to eat the money I can easily see him being cut. And that’s just about the only way I would want him… If we give up nothing and don’t have to pay him what he’s Already owed. I tend to agree on Atlanta. They have a guy that can’t stay healthy and was mediocre when healthy, then they have a guy already under contract that basically should have one of them the division this year. I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion Cousins is out of Atlanta by any means and if he is I don’t see how he ends up here.
Fair but is Arizona’s coach really going to be happy with Brissett next year? Rumor was that Saleh might be in position for that job. Does he really prefer a journey-man over Kyler? I still think Kyler’s gotten a bad wrap throughout the league but that’s just me. I know most people disagree.
I’m sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle with Kyler. I could easily see a change of scenery doing him good. Even if their next coach wants him around I don’t know that it can work out in Arizona for him anymore. Also depends on what Arizona does at quarterback. They could easily come away with someone they want to stash for a year and I think I would rather stash behind Brissett than Kyler All things considered.
Atlanta just cleaned house on the guys who picked Penix (one of the most controversial 1st round picks ever mind you), and essentially just felt a need to hire a guy in Matt Ryan who's job will essentially be to keep the next regime tandem in check. The owner by all accounts also believes they are still in win now mode. My money isn't on Penix being deemed the future. He's more of a bust reach pick you ultimately don't end up being afraid to move on from. I think Cousins stays put too.
The owner just said last week, "I do think Michael is our franchise QB." I'll go with his assessment.
